While you may associate Monticello, Indiana with Indiana’s largest Amusement Park (Indiana Beach), there is more to Monticello than twisting wooden coasters, zippin’ water slides, and fried food.

This small Indiana town, with a population under 6,000, Monticello has a lot to offer. It’s proximity to a major theme park is a plus, of course. Then there’s the lovely downtown with an assortment of shops and restaurants. Branching out from that, you will find other shops and places to eat tucked in here and there. From barbecue to pizza to bakeries plus garden shops to help you green up your landscape for less, a winery, and and a used bookstore, Monticello makes a fabulous day trip.

It’s not every town that remembers its younger members. Monticello has plans to create what looks to be a well planned and thought out skate park. What I know about skateboarding is–okay, I know nothing about skateboarding but it looks really neat. I would totally love to learn how if I wasn’t scared of breaking something. A writer with broken hands, wrists, or arms would not be easy.

Still, I love that they realize that the community needs to appeal to all of its members. That’s some great foresight right there. I can’t wait to see the park open and bustling. It will provide teens and pre-teens with a place to just go, hang out, and keep out of  trouble.

I wish every town would do such a thing, instead of adding more “no skateboarding” signs everywhere. Not exactly a friendly welcoming sight. This, however, is a huge step in the right direction.

White County Town

Things to Do in Monticello, IndianaAnyway, this White County town is beyond cute. The old, well-kept shop buildings are really a sight to see and most of them look great. It’s nice to see such an assortment in a little place.

The town even has a large drive-in movie theater. How cool is that? It’s been open for business since 1949 and draws 45,000 people to its first-run, double features!

Find homemade root beer at the B & K Drive-In and plenty of kid-friendly food. Locals directed me to Abe’s Pizza, a delicious pizza joint. Their breadsticks are amazing. Bonus: it’s just down from Kinser’s Bakery, so grab something yummy for dessert. Any kids in your group will find the Texas donut hilarious. Make sure to look for it in the case and point it out to them. Relax with wine from Whyte Horse Winery and pick up a couple of new wine accessories while you are there.

I was totally diggin’ Monticello, Indiana and can’t wait to go back and do more exploring and shopping and eating–and maybe hit up the amusement park as well. It has been more than a decade since I last visited. Jeez, it might be more than two decades since the last time I was there. I am sure so much has changed but, like many things found inside of a small town, I am sure plenty has also stayed the same.

Add Monticello to your Indiana travel plans. With its walkable downtown, multiple restaurants and shops, and plenty to do for the kids in your family, it makes a great place to play, anytime of year.
