Easy to find in downtown Rensselaer, this Indiana coffee shop has all sorts of coffee and tea bagged up and ready to go–just in case a single cup isn’t enough.
I admit that I’ve only recently discovered a love for coffee–not even a year ago kind of recent. Apparently, all I ever had to do was to try it black. Here I had gone my entire life not knowing what I was missing. I always loved the smell of coffee. I’d relish the scent of the coffee aisle at the grocery.
I’d try a cup every now and again. I’d add cream and sugar like everyone else. But I always hated it. What was I missing? I had an epiphany. What if I preferred it the way my Swedish aunt and grandma always drank it? Why hadn’t I tried it without anything in it? Bingo.
Let me share with you a few of my favorite Willow Switch blends. The Blueberry Creme Coffee and the Chocolate Raspberry Truffle Coffee are super. Does our home ever smell good when that flavor is brewing! Other varieties include Rensselaer Makes Me Crazy, Sunny Days, and Bomber Black (named for the high school mascot). I love the clever spin on the coffee names to reflect the town. It’s a cute touch.

Every time I happen by, which is often our home is just down the street, I tend to go for some variety of Chai Tea (hot or iced, spiced or vanilla) or a Peach Smoothie. Yum! I really need to branch out more. I’ve heard the Mixed Berry Smoothie is awesome but some habits are hard to break.
My husband, Jeremy, always orders some variation of coffee that usually involves chocolate or whipped cream so between the two of us, I’ve sampled quite a bit.
You may remember how I mentioned that the Willow Switch isn’t just a coffee shop. It’s also a well-stocked and very well-kept combination gift and home decor shop. There’s really neat furniture of all kinds, both antiques, and reproductions, picture frames–some with gorgeous local photography, quilts, linens, light fixtures…you get the idea.
I think it’s the perfect mix of old and new. Something always catches my eye. I love how she got started as well. She was smart about the whole thing, choosing to test the home decor idea by renting booth space at Jasper Junction, a shop with vendor space that carries flea market type things in addition to new pieces. It’s one of those places where you never know what you will find because it all depends on what the vendors have to offer.
Her booth did so well that she decided that it would be a good fit for Rensselaer. So, that’s exactly what she did. Now that her doors are open, the stock is in place, and the coffee is brewing, it has become a wonderful downtown destination.
