This past month the Jasper County museum just finished up with an exhibit on the Civil War (featuring a special piece from the Indiana Historical Society). Up next? Quilts!

History is just fascinating. Except for my dad, it wasn’t until college that I ever met anyone else who knew so much and made it interesting (thanks Prof. Guthrie).

Rensselaer, Indiana, like many small towns, has an interesting history to be sure. If you didn’t know that, try poking around the “Indiana” section in your local library sometime and see what you can find.

There’s a lot of great and wonderful Hoosiers out there. You might just meet a few of them when you enter the doors of this nicely done museum.

General Robert Milroy may have had a bit of bad luck during the war but it’s not all bad: he and his wife took in a family of freed slaves and taught them to read (yes, I learned that fact at the museum). Can you imagine how that would have changed their lives?

There’s more where that came from and maybe someday I’ll write that post. I do love me some Indiana history! But for now, you can get your Indiana history fix at your local Indiana history museums like the Jasper County Historical Society and Museum.

You can also check out Rensselaer Adventures because it sounds like he’s about to post his own article about the Jasper County Historical Society and Museum. Apparently I just missed him when I visited the museum. I came in, camera at the ready, gleam in my eye, not long after he left!

There are tons of great places pertaining to Indiana history in small towns. To get inside and learn more about Jasper County, please call ahead for current hours.

It’s fun to see what any Indiana town used to look like back in the “good old days.” It really makes you appreciate the conveniences of modern society, that is for sure!

If you’ve ever thought that history is pointless, you need to give it a second chance! Town and county museums are a great way to get to know more about the place you live–and that is always relevant!

How would I find out if a property in Rensselaer is eligible to be a historical landmark? I am interested in purchasing a town square property to be restored and open business to serve the community.

Do you have any engraved shotguns left for sale?

    Thank you,

I would like to find out about my relatives that lived in Jasper county in the 1840s. I would like to know what it might cost me to get help to look up information in your hisorical society. I would love to be able to come there and do it myself, but that most likely is not going to happen any time soon. Thank you for any information that you can give me.
