I blew through the book I Love to Tell the Story: Growing Up Blessed and Baptist in Small Town Indiana by Susan J. Braun (not an affiliate link). As someone who has a thing for small towns, well, this book was right up my alley–and now I have one copy of this thoughtful read for you to try and win!
You may remember Susan. She was a Featured Indiana Blogger here on little Indiana a little over a year ago with her blog of reminiscing: Girls in White Dresses.
Her story was such a joy to read. I planted myself on the front porch swing, with a cup of coffee, a scone, and wrapped up with this delightful book. Fast-paced and witty, it is one of those books that is easy to pick up and set down without getting all confused.
I can’t recommend it highly enough! For those of you who also grew up in a small Indiana town, I’m pretty sure you can identify with her story at times. Fisher Price Little People (we also called them kids!), embarrassing moments, and Vacation Bible School crafts–they all make an appearance along with photos of the author at different points in her life. How fun!

My favorite toy was an erector set – it had everything including a battery powered motor. This book sounds very interesting – I have lived in Indiana since 1993.

My favorite childhood toy is probably the teddy bear I got for Christmas 48 years ago.

Love this book! Even though I have it, I want another copy for my mother. My favorite childhood toy was a stuffed mouse with a built in music box. I still have Mousie!

My favorite childhood toy was a handful of select books. These books traveled with me wherever I went, between my parent’s homes and to my favorite Great Aunt’s house. Of course they went with me to my Grandparent’s homes too. I have been fortunate in that my mom made sure as I grew up that they always made each and every move and today at 38 I still have these books. Some are inscribed with messages from the person who gave them to me. Many are tattered with worn edges. All are filled with the love of a little girl now grown and the memories of being read to by those who loved her.

Now we’re going back a-ways to determine my favorite toy as a child – you see, I’m sort of one of those older ladies of-a-certain-age. Anyway, it would have been my dolls or perhaps my bike.
This book should be an interesting read. It will also be interesting to see if there is any slamming of her growing up Baptist as so many are doing these days. Perhaps I’ll win a copy (print only, please) and get to see. If appropriate, the book would be shelved on the Alamance christian School library after reading.
