The Levi Coffin House in Fountain City, Indiana possesses an amazing history. Nicknamed the Grand Central Station of the Underground Railroad, it is believed that 2,000 slaves running toward freedom spent a night here before rushing ever onward!

Think about that one for a minute: men, women, and children would travel in all sorts of ways to get to safety. Walking, running, or riding in the back of wagons and covered with straw. Roads weren’t smooth and they certainly weren’t safe for escaped slaves–or the people helping them!  Still, the Coffin family opened up their Fountain City, Indiana home to help others. In fact, they built their home with helping escaped slaves in mind in order to protect those briefly placed within their care.

Even in this very small Indiana town, there is a unique piece of Indiana history. It is very fortunate that the people of this town recognized what they possessed. Instead of tearing it down to make way for new, they have carefully preserved and lovingly protected the Levi Coffin House. You’ll want to check this out–Kid #1 loved this attraction!
