Ice cream season doesn’t need to end if you happen to be near Dairy Master in Loogootee, Indiana. More than just life-saving cool treats, they are known for their breaded pork tenderloin (and folks seem to enjoy the Patty Melt, too).
Life-saving? An ice cream parlor? Oh, yes. You see, we had been on a long Indiana trip. We had another destination in our sights when the worst thing possible happened: our air conditioner stopped working. I know, that’s why car windows roll down, right? You may be thinking that we should have sucked it up and dealt with it, however…our car is getting up there in years (and miles) and–our windows don’t roll down!
Sure, we have one working window, but did I yet mention that our car also likes to overheat? We had no idea that we would undergo a seemingly never-ending heat wave (and very severe drought) when we first planned this trip.
Ice Cream in Loogootee
That’s when we knew that we needed to cool off quickly. Everyone was miserable, especially the kids. A carseat isn’t exactly cooling. Poor little guy. So, we made our way to Dairy Master in downtown Loogootee. It was pretty hopping when we zipped on in! I suppose that is no surprise. In this kind of heat, everyone is trying to find ways to cool off and to keep from heating up their own kitchens with cooking.
While many choose the carhop service at Dairy Master, our windows don’t work, as I mentioned, and it would be way too hot for that anyway. But I did love to see it as an option. How cute. I had to snap an image of the specials board found inside of the restaurant.
This was good. So good, in fact, that I could have easily planted myself there for quite awhile. I only wish we had been able to grab lunch. But after sitting in that heat, cooling off inside this restaurant with a bit of ice cream was all we wanted. The idea of actual food was just too much. What a pity. The pork tenderloin sandwich at Dairy Master is supposed to legendary. No kidding. I have heard it is one of the best sandwiches you will ever eat. And I passed it up. Sigh. But I guess that’s all the more reason to make a return trip, right?
Here all we had needed was somewhere to soak up some air conditioning and cool off for a bit–and instead we managed to find a great ice cream parlor in the process. Am I ever glad we had a chance to stop inside this Loogootee, Indiana favorite. Maybe next time we can make the visit during not so sweltering circumstances.
