Margie's Country Store in Madison, Indiana

Margie’s Country Store in Madison, Indiana

We were walking all over downtown Madison, Indiana. We had parked the car at one end and decided to set out on foot for the rest of it. The town looks so fabulous, what with more than 130 blocks that make up the Madison Historic District. More than 1,500 buildings are a part of this multi-block designation, so it makes for really fantastic walking.

As we headed back up the street, just on the other side, we were still excited about our lunch at the Red Pepper Deli and Cafe. Then, we noticed a building that looked so fabulous, we had to pop in just to see what it was all about.

We were delighted with what we found inside of Margie’s Country Store. As I mentioned in a previous post about Margie’s, this was once a butcher shop, the former Cisco’s Meat Market. I can’t even imagine. This is such a nice, inviting space. When you walk in, you will be shocked by the shelves of fabrics.

There are so many varieties. The fabrics range in color and style. Do you remember those Little House on the Prairie books? There’s something here that reminds me of when the characters would get fabric at the general store. So, no, this isn’t a general store, but something about the layout and the atmosphere makes me think of that.

Madison, Indiana Shopping

Margie’s Country Store in Madison, Indiana

A delightful shop for sewing enthusiasts and home decorating fans alike, Margie’s Country Store in Madison, Indiana is a beautiful shop.

This Jefferson County fabric and gift shop has one floor of sewing supplies. Yes, there are fabrics, but there are also patterns, notions, and completed example works. Owner Margie Webb has snagged a lot of attention for her detailed jackets and vests. You can find those available here too.

Downstairs, there’s a lovely brick basement of country and garden home decor. It is packed with gift items for you, a friend–and your home. I nabbed fantastic seasonal Halloween decor that was on sale for a fantastic price. I can’t wait until next Halloween when I can put them up. The kids will be so excited.

Margie’s Country Store has been around for a very long time. The shop originally opened in March of 1971 and was located in the old Auxier Gas Service in Hanover. It’s been thriving ever since. It’s where locals, and even people regionally, visit when they need new quilting fabric and supplies. Margie, you know, is an avid quilter–though she doesn’t like to sell her quilts, but gives them away to friends and family.

So…why haven’t you been there yet? Add this quilter’s destination to your travel list of Indiana “must see” small town shops. It is a delight.
