Okay, so maybe picking out fresh fruits and vegetables fresh from the farm isn’t exactly an event but for many Indiana farmers markets located in the city it sure comes close. I’ve got a few reasons why you should make it a point to visit your area farmers market.

Live Music and Events — While small town farmers markets often hold special events, it seems a very common practice at many city markets to feature live music. It’s great to stroll around, see the sights, and listen to people chatting with great local musicians in the background.

Year Round — Okay, not every city has a year round farmers market but that is certainly a neat perk! Find seasonal produce right from the farm any time of year.

More than Fruits and Veggies — Every city handles their farmers market in their own way, but many carry more than just produce. In fact, you may find art, crafts, books, knife sharpening services, homemade candles, even baked goods, fresh picked flowers, or handmade jewelry! It’s an unexpected bonus at many a big city farmers market.

Community — The biggest reason to skip the store and head to your local farmers market is this: community. When you start dealing with the same vendors and seeing the same faces over and over, well, you start to get that neat community vibe going. In fact, you may end up striking a friendship or discovering something about the place you live that you just didn’t know before.

Local Minded — Did you know that many city farmers markets have strict guidelines as to where the produce can originate from? For some, it’s a specific region while others decree that it can only be from the gardens of local folks. Either way, it doesn’t get much more fresh than that.

Bargain Prices — You won’t believe the deals you can find in the city when you check out a farmers market. Produce is priced to sell. Learn how to freeze or can the things you buy and you can really save some dough.
