Self-taught potter Susy O’Donnell crafts her work in her Brown County shop. Her Brown County Historic Redware is available exclusively in Madeline’s French Country Shop. It’s quite the process. If you have ever seen a potter, they make it look so easy.

Thrown or molded, artist O’Donnell’s pieces begin with red earthenware. How does she do it? She covers the piece in white slip.
That’s just the start. Using an Italian technique, called sgrafitto (say that one five times fast). Next, she cuts through the white slip to reveal the piece’s outline. After all these various steps, this Indiana artisan hand paints the almost finished pieces in her studio with watercolor flowers.
After the second firing, the glaze crackles and crinkles. The final step is an aging process to give it a unique look that sets O’Donnell’s work apart. Wouldn’t that look cute in a country hutch or a cozy kitchen? Where will you put your Brown County Historic Redware?
