Payne's Custard and Coffee in Gas City, Indiana

Payne’s Custard and Coffee in Gas City, Indiana

Before my memorable visit to Payne’s Custard and Coffee in Gas City, Indiana, I had never had sticky toffee pudding. Oh, my! Served with a scoop of homemade frozen vanilla custard, it was fantastic. The small group I was with also shared an order of bread pudding, served along with a scoop of frozen vanilla custard.

It just goes to show you learn something new every day. How have I gone my whole life without ever trying even a teensy weensy spoon of it? But then again, maybe this small town cafe was just the place to have that first bite.

They do use local foods, some from their own on-site garden, as often as possible. It’s absolutely amazing what they have cooked up. This creative family with young children has made the most comfortable, bright, and lovely space you ever did see. Stepping inside you can’t help but feel at home.

Get a load of the menus–they are tucked inside of wonderful vintage books. I love it. What I don’t love is the fact that a large humongous coffee chain decided to move in across the street six months after this family business opened. Boo! Hiss! That is so wrong. Hopefully locals realize the benefit of supporting small businesses and the money that goes right back in to their economy.

Not only that, you can’t beat the menu, the service, or the atmosphere. I can’t say anything but good things about this one. Are you convinced that you need to add it to your Indiana travel plans yet?

I love when a Hoosier restaurant chooses Indiana brews and wines to add to their menu. If it has been awhile since you have sample an Indiana wine or beer–try it again. Our state is churning out a fabulous assortment. We were the first commercial wine producers in the country, you know. Why not support our down-to-earth wineries?

Anyway. Payne’s Custard and Coffee has a great selection. You will find Three Floyd’s Brewery ales on tap. If there’s anything I’ve heard over and over during my travels, it is that people want a local option where they can kick back, relax, and enjoy an adult beverage. That is precisely what you can find at Payne’s. With good food that uses locally-sourced ingredients as often as possible, you can taste the difference in every way.

There are so  many reasons to love Payne’s Custard and Coffee in Gas City, Indiana but I’ll give you a handful: homemade custard, amazing dessert, coffee roasted in-house, and a commitment to using local foods whenever possible. THIS is exactly what Gas City needed.
