When everyone and their brother recommends Ivanhoe’s Ice Cream and Sandwich Shoppe in Upland, Indiana to you, it’s obvious that you should listen. Emails, face-to-face chats, and locals on the street–is there anyone who didn’t take the time to point out their local favorite?
Could it be that Grant County folks are huge fans of Ivanhoe’s 100 Club, eating or drinking your way through 100 of Ivanhoe’s shakes or ice cream sundaes to get your name on the wall (and a free t-shirt) or do they just know how much I love ice cream and knew it would be a “win?” I’d guess it is a little bit of both.
Ivanohoe’s Ice Cream and Sandwich Shoppe
Either way, for a place in the small town of Upland, Indiana, with a reputation that has reached as far and wide, boasting their fun flavors in ice cream, I was expecting big things.
This was my second visit to Ivanhoe’s. The first visit, however, was one of those “let’s get in the car and drive somewhere” trips, just my husband, Jeremy, and I. The kids were at a friend’s house and we were ready for a kid-free adventure.
We had driven for ages. We were hungry and tired. We were also shocked to see a line that wrapped from the counter all the way around the tables on the inside, and to the entrance! Whoa! While the food is that good, this was a special weekend–graduation weekend at the local college. So, we left, vowing to return.
Food and Fun at Ivanhoe’s
I did return, though I didn’t get a chance to bring my husband on my return trip. The poor guy really missed out. I was happy to learn that the food was excellent, just like everyone had said. This local hangout is as delicious as it is comfortable.
There’s a lot of seating inside. As many tables as there may be, locals know to call ahead to get orders going. It gets really busy in this small town, as I previously found out.
I know, it may not look like it will blow you away from the outside but that’s the part I love about locally owned restaurants. Looks are typically deceiving. Open since 1965, they know a thing or two about food.
You see that image above? They have a good point. I am not a fan of mass review sites for a reason: it’s far too easy to complain. We value our time. We feel like we should always have impeccable service, right? I think we forget that servers and cooks and chefs and hosts are people too. Sometimes, mistakes happen. Okay, if mistakes happened constantly, that’s one thing, but for a one-time visit? Bad luck.
So, please, keep in mind the image above the next time you consider leaving a bad mark against a small business. We’re all just trying. Ivanhoe’s is a wonderful dining destination–and one you’ll find yourself returning to time and time again.
