Book Review: A Guide to Caves and Karst of Indiana by Samuel S. Frushour

Whether you are interested in Indiana caves on the tourist side or want to dig a little bit on your own, this would be a handy guide to have! Complete with glossary, (I had to look up “karst” as I had never heard the term before), I found this to be a useful supplement to our little Indiana trips, to really give our  boys a little background!

This book utilizes two experts in their fields: the author, Samuel Frushour, a big name in Indiana caving, as well as Jerry Lewis, primary author of the Cave Fauna section.

In other words, A Guide to Caves and Karst is a well-rounded look at Indiana caves.

Indiana Caves

Detailed descriptions guide those interested in caves as to when and where to seek them.

There are tips for safe caving, information on springs, cave entrances, blind valleys, and other karst features. Featuring examples found in specific Southern Indiana caves further reinforces the relevance of this cave guide for those with an interest.

Personally, I am completely hooked on the chapter of exploring wild caves and have picked it up and reread it again and again. Endless Cave, Porter’s Cave, and Langdon’s Cave are just a handful of the wild caves found inside this book. I find the idea of caving so fascinating  but my overactive imagination finds it slightly terrifying.

Indiana Authors

What a fantastic work to grace the shelf of any Hoosier. It’s a thoughtful, entertaining read on what could be the “final frontier” right here in Indiana.
