You know a place has good food when the parking lot is full and people drive onto the lawn to park!
Such is the case at Tate’s Place in Portage, Indiana, which serves not only people who come via cars and trucks, but also those who walk, bike or rollerblade there because it’s along the popular Prairie-Duneland Trail.

Fortunately, between the efficient service, the large dining room and the spacious outdoor seating area, people can get a fresh, filling meal without delay.
Tate’s Place is one of those places where the locals go for freshly-made baked goods, breakfast (served at breakfast or during lunch), super sandwiches and salads and more.
The only problem with the menu is trying to decide which delicious option to pick!
Portage, Indiana Restaurant
I dined there recently with my co-workers at Indiana Dunes Tourism. We were in Portage to do a United Way Day of Caring service project (landscaping work) at the Portage YMCA.
I worked up an appetite, so I started with the large fruit plate, which comes with a muffin. It had a wide variety, including grapes, pineapple, strawberries and melon. I also got a veggie omelet with hash browns and raisin toast. Very, very good. A tall glass or orange juice and I was good to go.
My co-workers ordered a variety of down-home favorites, including a grilled cheese sandwich, a patty melt and a salad loaded with bacon and all kinds of other goodies.

Everybody raved about the meal, and the service at this Porter County restaurant was prompt and friendly.
