Mayberry Cafe in Danville, Indiana takes small town to a new level–an Andy Griffith type of level!

The natives were restless so we did what any other parents would do in this situation: we ordered pie for ourselves to take back to our room at The Old MG Bed and Breakfast. We are all sorts of sneaky.

After the kids were in bed, we didn’t wait to dig in! My slice of Mayberry Cafe’s Sugar Cream Pie has made it move up into one of my all-time favorite pies ever. It was absolute perfection!

Valentine's Day Chex Mix Recipe

Valentine’s Day recipes may be plastered across every other food-related website, but none are as easy or as reliable as this one!

From a couples standpoint–I’m not very into Valentine’s Day. But from a parenting standpoint–I love sharing in the holiday fun with our kids.

This Betty Crocker recipe is easy enough that it looks like you fussed when it takes mere minutes to throw together this sweet take on Chex Mix. The sprinkles just make it cute!

Valentine’s Day Chex Mix of Love 1/2 Serving

Yield: 11 Servings

From the Betty Crocker website.

Ingredients

4 1/2 Cups Rice Chex Cereal
1/2 Cup White Vanilla Baking Chips
1/4 Cup Peanut Butter
2 Tablespoons Butter or Margarine
1/3 Cup Powdered Sugar
1/4 Cup Red, White, and Pink M&M's
2 Tablespoons Sprinkles

Instructions

Measure out 4 1/2 Cups of Rice Chex into Large Bowl.
Melt together White Vanilla Baking Chips, Peanut Butter, and Butter. Stir frequently.
Meanwhile, pour Powdered Sugar into plastic bag.
Pour melted chocolate, peanut butter, and butter mixture over the large bowl of Rice Chex cereal.
Stir.
Divide into half. Pour half the coated Rice Chex into plastic powdered sugar bag.
Shake to coat.
Pour onto wax paper to set for 15 minutes.
To remaining Rice Chex cereal without the Powdered Sugar coating, add the M&M's and the Sprinkles.
Pour onto wax paper and let set for 15 minutes.
When set, combine into one bowl.
Easy, peasy--and pretty!

Nappanee, Indiana is thrilled about the new kid in town, Veni’s Sweet Shop!

Yes, Veni’s Sweet Shop is as good as it sounds.

Veni’s Chocolate Shop in Nappanee, Indiana

Nice and bright, this shop is so welcoming. Rows and rows of chocolates in all shapes, sizes, and flavors beg to be bought and eaten behind the shining glass.

I would be lying if I said I came out of Veni’s Sweet Shop empty-handed!

But it’s research, right? I mean, I don’t really even have a choice in the matter. I owe it to all of you to tell it like it is.

After an agonizingly difficult decision, I ended up with Orange Creme, Vanilla Creme, and Mint Creme. My favorite flavors right here in little Indiana! Awesome.

Smooth and delicious–there’s no additives, wax, or preservatives in these chocolatey bites of Heaven. You can definitely taste the difference. Fresh and fantastic.

At this Indiana candy store, the Orange Creme was my favorite!

Personally, I would love to do more research on Veni’s Sweet Shop. Seriously. Name the day!

More Than a Chocolate Shop

Veni's Sweet Shop: Nappanee, Indiana

This Elkhart County shop isn’t only for those who need a Chocolate fix (though it certainly does the trick!).

There’s a selection of nuts, candy, and even drinks–like an ice cream float or Hot Chocolate.

But more than that? I see Veni’s Sweet Shop as one more reason to bypass the big box shops and to support local business. Oh, how sweet it is!

Go There

A sweet shop is just what Nappanee needed! I can’t think of a better fit for this bustling Indiana town.

Just a smidgen away from the old downtown, Netters Restaurant in Bremen, Indiana is definitely a family affair.

Serving up tasty and delicious homemade food that’s made to order, this Indiana mom and pop restaurant was a wonderful surprise!

I admit that I was apprehensive at first when I walked into the really nice, brightly lit interior–would this place serve homemade food?

Absolutely it does! Flipping through the Netters menu, there’s a lot to like.

I could not decide between the Patty Melt or the Reuben Sandwich (surprise, surprise). Apparently I am very much a creature of habit!

Hubs ordered Fried Mushrooms and a Philly Cheesesteak Sandwich. He does love a good Philly!

I finally narrowed it down to the Patty Melt–and a side of fries. But next time…that Reuben Sandwich is getting crossed off the list.

If I can keep myself from getting that yummy Patty Melt again, that is!

After receiving our order, well, let’s just say that Netters Restaurant ranks up there as one of my all-time faves. From start to finish, it was delicious.

A Family Affair

When I told hubs that my fries were amazing, the owner mentioned that up until I ordered them they were still a potato! Now how is that for fresh?

Hubs boasted that his Fried Mushrooms were the best he had ever had! Days later and he’s still going on about the greatness of those mushrooms!

In fact, the owner mentioned that everything they make is made to order and always fresh. It shows! There’s a lot of care taken in the preparation of each and every dish.

The owners have six kids–one of which was helping that very night. Support a family restaurant and you support a family!

You absolutely need to check it out. There’s even a bonus: Free Wi-Fi! Now how’s that for a great Indiana town hangout?

Tuna Casserole Recipe

While this Tuna Casserole recipe isn’t the prettiest final product ever–comfort food never is–rest assured that it is delicious!

I think the addition of mayonnaise is what makes this so good. In our home, no one is upset when this one is served. Kid #2 often proclaims, “Mmm mmm!”

Make it tonight and see for yourself. Easy, simple, and filling, it may just become a regular in your recipe rotation too!

Tuna Casserole: It’s What’s For Dinner

From Food.com with a few variations.

Ingredients

8 ounce Egg Noodles
1 (10 1/4 ounce) can Cream of Celery Soup
1/2 cup Mayonnaise
3/4 cup Evaporated Milk
1 cup grated Cheddar Cheese, divided
1/2 cup Celery, chopped
1/2 small Onion, minced
4 ounces Mushrooms, drained (optional)
1 teaspoon Black Pepper
1 (7 ounce) can Tuna, with Juice

Instructions

325* Oven.
Cook Egg Noodles to al dente.
Drain.
Mix together all ingredients in large casserole, reserving 1/4 cup cheese.
Sprinkle reserved cheese over the top.
Bake 30-40 minutes.
Serve hot.

little Indiana had had a full afternoon in Star City, Indiana as it was–but dinner was calling, so we had to answer!

Jones Robotic Dairy owner Pam suggested Oak Grove Restaurant. She was right on target.

While I hate that instant of walking into a small Indiana town place and everyone turning and staring for a sec before getting back to their conversations, I love hearing the cross-table “hello” and “howdy” of locals as they greet each other and chit-chat.

What I also love are good menus. Oak Grove Restaurant has a lot of yummy-sounding things. Tack on changing monthly and daily specials and you’ve got yourself variety.

Known for their chicken, Hubs wisely went with the chicken strips as did Kid #1. I got the Patty Melt. Ever since Lynn’s Restaurant glorious Patty Melt, I just can’t say no.

Waiting for our meal is always the hardest part with kids–until our server brought over coloring books and a whole bag of crayons!

It was quickly shoved aside, however, when our steaming plates of goodness were set down before us.

Let me start off by saying that having to take pics of food before we could dig in was particularly agonizing this go-around. Everything looked and smelled SO good.

I started with Kid #1, then hubs, and then my own. Kid #2 had something simple. Whatever it was now escapes me, but I do remember he ate all of his veggies and then asked for more–not exactly how it works when you go out to eat!

After Dinner

What purpose does dinner serve other than letting you get to the good stuff–dessert! Of course we saved room. But that article? Will keep for a different day. I do have two words for you, however: “homemade” and “pie.”

Best Homemade Biscuits Recipe

This is the best homemade biscuit recipe ever. Serve this one with Cabbage Soup or use in the Crockpot Chicken and Dumplings Recipe.

I found this recipe in an Easter basket full of recipes in a (now closed) Indiana antique shop.

Steps 1 – 3 are clipped from somewhere with handwritten notes. “These are good. Best biscuits ever” is penned across the top of it. They are right!

Best Homemade Biscuits Recipe Ever

Cut into pieces from some sort of printed material, handwritten comments assured that this recipe was indeed the "Best Biscuit Recipe Ever!"

Ingredients

2 Cups Flour
4 teaspoons Baking Powder
2 teaspoons Sugar
1/2 teaspoon Salt
1/2 teaspoon Cream of Tartar
1/2 cup Shortening
2/3 Cup Milk

Instructions

450* Oven.
Combine dry ingredients.
Cut in 1/2 cup Shortening with a pastry blender. It will have coarse crumbs.
Add in 2/3 cup Milk.
I use the pastry blender to combine it all together.
Dough is soft and easy to work with.
Turn out onto lightly floured surface (I use a cutting board) and knead a few times.
Roll out to 1/2" to 1" thick.
Cut into Biscuits.
Bake 450* for 10-12 minutes.

Since it’s move from Coatesville, Indiana, Bread Basket Cafe and Bakery is bigger and better than ever! Located inside a restored home, it doesn’t get any more welcoming than this.

You can’t miss the display case of gorgeous cakes. They are certain to catch your eye as soon as you step inside the cozy interior.

Chocolate cakes, Vanilla Cakes, Mini Cakes–they even have a Snickerdoodle Cake that is absolutely beautiful!

This Hendricks County haven of goodness uses local products to make mouthwatering soups.

Spread on top of a pillowy, soft, and flaky croissant, it’s loaded with yummy things! Grapes, toasted pecans, and apples–well, this is just lip-smackin’ good!

This Cabbage Soup Recipe is so simple–yet delicious!

While searching through recipes, I happened upon a recipe written by my late grandma. Yellowed with age, this stationary features a dog, two cats, and flowers. What else would you write a recipe on?

I love cabbage but it wasn’t until I got to the end of the recipe that I noticed one word, “Delicious!” scrawled across the bottom. Yes, it even had an exclamation point. Sold!

Cabbage Soup Recipe

This is a recipe from my late Grandmother. Written on yellowed stationary with cats, dogs, and flowers, she has "Delicious!" scrawled across the bottom.

Delicious it is! I like it with or without the bacon. Kid #1 prefers it with the bacon.

Ingredients

4 Cups Beef Stock
1 8 oz. Can Stewed Tomatoes
3 Cups Cabbage, Shredded
1 Medium Onion, Chopped
1 1/2 Cups Apple, Diced
1 11/2 teaspoon Salt
3 Strips Bacon
1/4 teaspoon Pepper

Instructions

Combine Stock, Tomatoes, Cabbage, Onion, Apple, Salt and Pepper.
Cover and cook 30 minutes.
Meanwhile, fry Bacon crisp.
Crumble Bacon.
Top with crumbled Bacon to serve.
