The Porch Cafe and Books in Danville, Indiana is one of the few places little Indiana and family have ever entered that boasted a completely organic menu.

Everything was so fresh and delicious at this Danville, Indiana cafe. Keeping their menu short and sweet means that each and every homemade entree receives the proper attention!

Oh–and if you are a larger group, get a pitcher of tea to share. I can vouch for the goodness of the peach tea. I think I drank three full glasses of the stuff!

Country Folks Pizza is amazing, amazing pizza! This is the small town mom and pop business at its best.

This Kouts, Indiana shop has walls plastered with thank you cards, notes, and drawings. From cheery thank-you’s to artwork from the younger bunch and local sporting and scouting troops, this pizza place has very deep roots indeed.

But maybe one of the funniest things I’ve seen has been the motto of this Indiana town pizza joint. “Have you had a hot piece lately?” Now that’s just clever and definitely memorable–just like the Country Folks Pizza itself.

Steve’s Grill is the brand spankin’ new place to eat in DeMotte, Indiana.

Remember Mike’s Kitchen (the town staple for what seemed like decades)? And then Hometown Grill after that? Don’t worry–Steve’s Grill may have taken the location, but it introduces a great new feel and a fantastic homemade menu!

Large menus with a lot of variety make me nervous. It usually means “frozen” and that means it’s not going to be included on little Indiana. Going out to eat, well, I expect a little more!

However, our server at Steve’s Grill assured me that “nothing was frozen.” I instantly cheered and poured over the menu with a renewed sense of purpose.

Breakfast is served all day at Steve’s Grill (which I love!), but more than that you’ll find various entrees, sandwiches, salads, and then some. Changing specials round out the offerings.

The special of the day while we were there may have been frog legs (not kidding) but I, very much a creature of habit, ordered a Reuben Sandwich.

Kid #1 got French Toast, Kid #2 wanted “Eggies!” and hubby settled on the Philly Style Steakburger–our server’s recommendation. He is a fan of a good Philly!

We all dug in. For starters? Those fries are good. Oh my. We were all pleased with our order. I am happy to say that this Indiana mom and pop restaurant did a very nice Reuben Sandwich.

It’s the new hot spot in this Indiana town! I’m pretty sure the whole town turned out for this one.

Save room for dessert. But, you know, this wouldn’t be little Indiana if I didn’t torture you by making you wait for the story on that!

Osgood, Indiana has a great place to grab some grub: The Osgood Grub Company! You knew that was coming, now, didn’t you?

This is good food with generous portions and a fun atmosphere to boot!

Step inside this dimly-lit restaurant and feast your eyes on the walls. They are covered in fun things–from old musical instruments to a deer head. Seriously, these are fun.

The kids liked looking at everything. Since they had had such a long trip already we took them around to check out other parts of the restaurant as well.

The decor may be fun but the shining star here is most definitely the food!

There’s a lot to love at Osgood Grub Company. The menu is very nicely done. It was hard to decide!

The kids had a few choices (they ended up with a Grilled Cheese Sandwich and a Hamburger).

But as for us? Based on a recommendation, Hubs got the Italian Beef Sandwich.

Well, you know my weakness: Pork Tenderloin. I had to get the side of onion rings, too. Hey, I heard they were delicious!

You know I am also a bit of an onion ring aficionado. Yep, these were also fantastic!

Come and Get It

Crispy and nicely flavored, I would get them again. Absolutely the same goes for my breaded Pork Tenderloin Sandwich.

Hubs confessed complete happiness with his sandwich. Since we weren’t eating alone this time, he kept his yummy noises to a minimum.

This was good food. Nicely portioned, you will not in any way, shape, or form leave this Osgood, Indiana restaurant hungry! It just ain’t happening.

Go There

This is one small Indiana town that exemplifies little Indiana to a “T.” Unless you live there, you probably wouldn’t know it existed–and you would so be missing out.

Make the trip to scenic Ripley County and take in the sites. Osgood Grub Company is one place you’ll want to check out!

Schmidy’s Pizza Palace is the new pizza place in Rensselaer, Indiana.

For reasons I cannot altogether fathom, Rensselaer attracts pizza shops like a fly to honey. I don’t understand it–but I have to say I like it!

This newest addition, Schmidy’s Pizza Palace has taken up residence in what was once known as Jamie’s Cafe.

Taking a cue from the original casual vibe, Schmidy’s also keeps it low-key.

The walls are decorated with sports memorabilia from the various local teams, like Saint Josephs College and the Rensselaer Central School Corporation mascot, The Bombers.

Now that is a fun way to exhibit a bit of local flair!

You’ll find more than locally-oriented wall decor: this is a fantastic menu. More than just pizza, you’ll find sandwiches, salads, and an assortment of sides at this Jasper County pizza place.

Hubs and I were thrill to see a Chicken Alfredo Pizza that had Broccoli on it! I know that sounds so strange but, many years ago, hubs was going through the Naval Nuclear Power School near Charleston, South Carolina.

There was a wonderful mom and pop pizza shop there that got us hooked on it–and we could never find anything else like it.

Until now. I guess even then I preferred the mom and pop restaurants!

Rensselaer, Indiana: Schmidy's Pizza Palace

Schmidy’s Pizza Palace has very good pizza. I’m impressed with the choices at this Indiana town parlor!

Plan ahead if you want the Stuffed Crust Pizza. It takes 45 minutes! I’m sure it’s worth it–that was good pizza (and loaded cheese fries)!

Something about Cecil’s Pork ‘N More in Greensburg, Indiana caught my eye–there was a commercial smoker sitting out in the front!

By now, you should know how I love my freshly smoked pork products. That is good stuff indeed.

Step inside and try to resist the impulse to purchase one of everything. It smells so good!

There is nothing quite like an Indiana mom and pop restaurant that has their own commercial smoker. Nothing.

There’s a white board with a handful of daily specials as well as a full menu. Seat yourself or order at the counter and take it home.

Cecil’s Pork ‘N More Food

We got the kids the Pork Sliders. It comes with 3 of them! Perfect!

Hubs ordered the Brisket and I got the Pork Burger. I do love a good burger! We had the Fried Potatoes with Onions.

You would think that potatoes and onions would not be so exciting, however–Cecil’s Pork ‘N More does something magical to them. I could have licked my plate they were so darn good!

Fresh from the smoker and the kitchen, everything was just awesome.

I also over-estimated my appetite (and the portions) and ordered dessert: the daily special of Peach Cobbler. It was so worth it, though!

But, as you may have noticed, travel writing is not for the faint of heart. Our trips do not always run so smooth.

Hubs lifted up angry, pouting toddler over the table (aka Kid #2) and managed to clank his feet against the giant Ball jar filled with (delicious) Sweet Tea. What a mess!

The folks at Cecil’s Pork ‘N More handed over paper towels and were so very nice about it! They even sent over some small kid-sized bowls of their daily special, the Peach Cobbler.

It was unexpected but very appreciated. Thank you so much!

The service was fantastic and the food was even better–if that’s even possible.

This Decatur County restaurant will be receiving a whole new look. As if you needed another reason to check it out! Just don’t forget to tell ‘em that little Indiana sent you.

Kouts, Indiana may not be the Indiana town you think of when you want pizza. Let’s change that now, shall we? You need to meet Country Folks Pizza.

For twenty years this June, this Porter County pizza joint has been cookin’ up one heck of a perfect pie. This pizza is amazing!

This pizza is so amazing that I had to go grab a leftover slice after I wrote that second sentence. I kid you not. What will I do when it’s gone?

I had a meeting with Jesse Harper from JBH Productions who will be producing a couple of travel vignettes for little Indiana. We met at Country Folks Pizza and chatted over water (me) and soft drinks (hubs and Jesse).

It smelled so good inside. After our sit-down was over–hubs and I decided we had to bring home some pizza.

We didn’t take long to make up our minds. In fact, I think this was some sort of record!

Looking over the sides and extras portion of the menu, we got started with Tomato and Cheese Bread. For the car. What? You think we could wait until we got home?

We didn’t take home just any pizza. We took home the most unusual pizza we’ve seen in any of the small Indiana towns we’ve traveled through. We took home a Pepper-jack Swiss Beef Pizza!

For research purposes, we had to get the 20″ pizza. It is loaded with two pounds of roast beef. Two pounds! They say it is equal to four foot long sandwiches worth! Yowza.

Country Folks Pizza: Kouts, Indiana

Laden with Pepper-jack and Swiss Cheese, garlic butter, green peppers, and onions–it is impressive. This is the Country Folks Pizza people’s signature creation. Customers raved about this delectable sandwich selection so much, they thought, “Why not turn it into pizza?”

They sent me home with a pizza cutter because, if they cut it in store right then, butter would have leaked all over. Oh. My. Word.

I ate it for dinner, breakfast, lunch, and dinner. I also ate it cold. I also just ate it again. Any way you slice it–I am obsessed!

You know me. You know my pizza obsession. You need to know Country Folks Pizza. It’s more proof that great things are frequently found in the smallest of packages.

THIS is a menu. Between Stan’s Stuffed Pizza or the classic crust, from super-thin to deep dish, Country Folks Pizza has it!

A slew of sandwiches and their own pizza creations, you’ll find plenty here to keep you happy. As for me? I think there’s one slice of pizza left in the fridge–and it’s calling my name. Just don’t forget to tell ‘em that little Indiana sent you.

Walkerton, Indiana: Corner Cup Cafe

Downtown Walkerton, Indiana has quite a few really sharp buildings–you can’t help but notice the large mural painted on the side of the Corner Cup Cafe!

It’s sort of like an all in one Indiana coffee shop, chocolate shop, and cafe.

I love a good cup of coffee as much as the next guy. Here at Corner Cup Cafe, there are changing specials and a very large and impressive assortment of flavored coffees. Yum!

Add to that a seasonal menu and a nice selection on the usual menu, it’s easy to see why folks in this Indiana town don’t just eat and run–they linger.

We had lunch at this Walkerton staple. Well, lunch and coffee.

With an eye-catching bakery case of goodies (and chocolates by a famed big city chocolate maker), you can bet we threw dessert in there too! You knew that was coming, though, didn’t you?

I’ll admit it was hard to decide!

There were a few seasonal items that sounded so good. Cranberry Spinach Salad? How unusual! But…there was also a Reuben Sandwich on the menu. I am a creature of habit.

Luckily hubs was along for the ride and he doesn’t always want to get the same thing (though, really, I consider my Reuben Sandwich obsession more of a hunt for the best! It’s research, right?). He went for the Beef and Mushroom Panini.

Piping hot with melty cheese in all the right places, both of our sandwiches looked fantastic. Don’t you agree?

Take a tip from the locals and head to this St. Joseph County all in one shop for a cup of coffee, a tasty snack, or a delicious lunch.

I know I’ve left you wondering what we had for dessert, so I have two words for you: “chocolate” and “cake!” But that’s a story for a different day!

Amish Acres Threshers Dinner in Nappanee, Indiana is like taking a break from the harvest season while sitting outside under a big oak tree, passing around platters piled high–but without the harvest or sitting outside! In other words? Awesome!

After a great Amish-style dinner, we came to the best part of the whole evening. For those that are new to little Indiana, that would be the part where we get to pick out our dessert! Oh, the choices.

Our server brought around a giant tray of pies. It was a plethora of pies! I chose the Coconut Cream (and choose well) while hubs went for Pecan Pie. Here’s a hint–don’t pass on the pie! If you are stuffed (like we were) ask for a “to go” container before heading out of this great Nappanee, Indiana attraction!
