I will be relying on warm Summer memories to get me through the hardest parts of the Winter. These are from our neighborhood block party and circus. It’s an annual event that pretty much screams, “Summer!” to me and mine.

The Indiana food pantry is in borderline crisis mode. The government has made cut-backs and more people than ever are needing its services!

Indiana Food Pantry

little Indiana likes to lend a hand wherever she can and particularly enjoys time spent at an Indiana food pantry.

The organizing and sorting, filling out the shelves and seeing the food that you know is going to help someone out…it just feels good.

There are a few important things that you need to know when it comes to an Indiana food pantry in small Indiana towns and beyond.

1. Government Funding is Down — Just when you think nothing else can get cut–the food pantry is now receiving less funding and goods than ever before. Now that people are in need now more than ever before, the food pantry has a strain on its resources.

2. The Food Pantry Needs More Than Just Canned Goods — Think toilet paper, paper towels, peanut butter, loaves of bread, your extra garden produce, and cereal. Especially cereal–this particular food pantry received its last shipment of cereal and won’t be getting any more–at least not from the government. Call or stop in your local food pantry to find out just what items they need.

3. Holidays — The food pantry doesn’t just need your help around Thanksgiving and Christmas. It needs your help ALL YEAR! Don’t just send along your dusty cans you never use. These are real people. These are your neighbors, co-workers, and friends who are too embarrassed to tell anyone around them that their circumstances have changed.

4. Food Pantry Myth — Think the food pantry is only used by single moms with 18 kids? Think again. The largest segment of the population (and what I certainly saw the times I have volunteered in distributing food) is used by the elderly! Yes, your grandma and your grandpa can no longer afford the cost of living and are using the food pantry. This both saddens and horrifies me.

5. Off Brands and Rejects– Please, don’t just give an Indiana food pantry your cast-offs and expired food. Expired food is pitched and the weird stuff will probably eventually meet the same fate. If you truly want to help, don’t reach for the off-brand of boxed mac n’ cheese or Ramen Noodles (seriously, those are often donated). That kind of stuff a struggling family already has–and are sick to death of eating it! What they don’t often have are things like canned fruit, instant oatmeal, and other nutritious items that just cost too much but are so important for a healthy lifestyle.

Food for Thought

Indiana Food Pantry: What Does Your Local Pantry Need?

I’ll step off my soapbox now. I hope I have at least given you food for thought. By now, you should know how important “passing it on” is for me.

After all, it is the basis for little Indiana Businesses! If you have been blessed with plenty, why not share with those around you?

In this struggling economy, we can all use an extra hand! Whether you donate your time, money, or food items, know that it will be greatly appreciated.

I started little Indiana because I cared about small Indiana businesses. Maybe it’s due to my long family history of small business owners. Maybe it’s in my blood.

Gas stations, diners, video stores–my family has been there and done that. little Indiana is my contribution to our small business history–and my passion.

little Indiana Begins…

Truth be told, it all started during our first year in a new small town. Hearing sirens for the longest time, hubs ventured outside in the cold and dark of Winter to see what was happening.

He burst back inside proclaiming, “There’s a parade down the street!” Apparently, our small town has an annual Christmas Parade. But as newbies? We had no idea.

That planted the seed. If I didn’t know about it and I lived here…how many other people were also in the dark?

When I decided to begin little Indiana, I planned, planned, and planned some more. I didn’t want to just explore my small Indiana town–I wanted to explore the state!

It was a year in the making. I wanted to make sure I did it right–and I had such limited html knowledge. I figured I had to hire someone to create the site that matched my vision.

Year of Planning and Frustration

Vevay, Indiana: Swiss Wine Festival Media Celebrity Grape Stomp 2011 -- I've Even Stomped Grapes!

And I did. Well, I tried to hire someone, anyway. Each time someone seemed like they would take on the job, they would disappear off the face of the Earth.

Or, worse yet, one company didn’t actually complete the things they started–and then tried to charge me for them!

So, after a long year of fine-tuning the little Indiana idea, I decided to do it myself. Pregnant with our second child, I spent night after night learning how to build a blog. It took months for me to get the design for little Indiana just right.

The site went live two weeks before I went into labor. That was over two years ago.

little Indiana Businesses is Born

Touring small towns, I received a lot of requests for web design. Knowing how full my own schedule was–I couldn’t help out. Considering how much trouble I had had, I couldn’t even pass along a referral.

Then it hit me: why don’t I have a sister site to little Indiana where businesses can get the online presence that they need with as little fuss as possible?

I also figured that I would be smarter this time around. This time? I wouldn’t get taken for a ride. Well. Things didn’t work out quite like I’d hoped. Again, I ended up doing it alone.

This is why I’m so completely dedicated to you: I personally know how hard it is to get online. I also know from many of your stories, that you’ve lost money trying to hire help as well.

little Indiana is a safe place. You have probably met me in person and if you haven’t? It’s only a matter of time.

Our small Indiana town travels might appear to be easy and mess-free. But here’s a little known fact: travel writing is a dirty job.

With four humans in one car for hours at a time…things can get downright ugly. Here’s a behind-the-scenes look at three little Indiana adventures. You know, the icky stuff that goes on after the camera is put away.

#1 Jones Robotic Dairy in Star City, Indiana

A robotic dairy sounds pretty awesome, right? That’s what little Indiana and family thought, too! We were ready and raring to go.

It was a bit of a haul for us so we did what any smart parents do: we packed a nice lunch for the car and took off! Peanut Butter and Honey Sandwiches and Carrot Sticks. It would keep the kids entertained and quiet for a good part of the trip.

Now, MapQuest managed to give us a rather round-about route to Star City, Indiana. We did a bit of zigging and zagging. I think it was the zagging that did in Kid #2. At first glance we thought he had choked on something. As hubs was pulling over, well, Kid #2 informed us as to the exact contents of his stomach.

Here we are pulled over at the side of the road, plenty far from home. For this day trip we had managed to forget a change of clothes. But even worse–what do you do with a car-seat that is full of partly digested lunch?

If you are little Indiana you: #1. Cry and #2 Realize what a good story this will make one day and you direct hubby to a home nearby to ask permission to use a hose and rinse off the seat before little Indiana also loses her lunch. No kidding.

The kindly owners of Jones Robotic Dairy have a granddaughter who had a few clothes just perfect for Kid #2. That disaster was diverted. Kid #2 was stylin’ in brown plaid pants and a brown striped shirt. Of course, he smelled a little off, but we were at a dairy farm so it blended right in!

Since that time we have learned to always carry along disinfecting wipes “just in case.” They are perfect for wiping down car doors and car-seat buckles.

#2. Spencer County

Holiday World in Santa Claus, Indiana: Travel by Car is Ugly...but Boats are A-OK!

For those of you unfamiliar with Spencer County, you are missing out!

Home to Holiday World (and so much more), in the Summer, the green rolling hills, fields, and wooded areas make for absolutely gorgeous scenery.

Really, it makes me belt out “50 Nifty United States” or “Indiana” (my version of Oklahoma with the appropriate substitution) songs for some reason.

Unfortunately, Kid #2 does not share my affinity for classic tunes. Or, perhaps it is only the rolling hills. Either way, when he made his opinion known, it also happened to be very warm outside. Some might even call it boiling. Also? Two of our four car windows refuse to roll down. I couldn’t make this stuff up.

Let’s just say that we learned to never, ever allow Kid #2 to drink milk in the car again. According to hubs, milk turns to butter in our son’s stomach. We now know to always carry around a small bottle of laundry detergent for emergency clothes washing. We would need it two more times that trip alone!

#3. Twenty Restaurant and Piano Bar in Wabash, Indiana

Twenty Restaurant in Wabash, Indiana

Picture it: soft music playing, glasses clinking, soft laughter. It would have been a romantic evening for little Indiana and hubs at Twenty Restaurant and Piano Bar in Wabash, Indiana but for the addition of Kid #2 (13 months at the time). We were determined to make the best of it.

It was easy enough, at least, at first. Our server was friendly, the atmosphere was fantastic, and the Twenty menu was phenomenal. The food? Well, after our salad and appetizer we couldn’t wait for dinner and dessert! That is, until it happened.

We heard a noise. A really strange noise coming from Kid #2. Hubs says, and I quote, “He’s percolating!” I laugh and then say, “Well, pick him up!”

That is when, to our utmost horror, we notice that not only was Kid #2 percolating, it had bubbled up and over his diaper, dropping onto the pristine high chair, and a blob even fell onto the floor below. Hubs rushed off to our Charley Creek Inn room a floor above, baby gold oozing against his arm.

Me? Well, I stammered something about our baby exploding and needing something to clean up a mess (while apologizing profusely, of course). To their credit, they whisked it quickly (and quietly) away and were oh so nice about it. I sat down. And waited.

Then I realized: Hubs will never, ever come down after what just happened. I just knew he would hide in our room. So–they sent it to our room.

I headed up the stairs, absolutely mortified. Opening the door to our room, the smell about knocked me off my feet. Hearing the sounds of a baby happily playing in the bathtub did nothing for my mood. So, I cried. Then, I did what I also do: I wrote it down–and laughed. I did not want to forget that our poor server was a new hire.

The next morning, the staff teased us a little bit, which I honestly appreciated. If they could laugh about it, well by golly, so could I! It was our first brush with disaster and we’ve since learned a lot!

Travel with Kids

That’s little Indiana for you. Travel with kids can be messy. It can be unpredictable. But–it certainly makes for a good story.

We now have a checklist of ‘emergency” items for travel with kids. Disinfecting wipes, a small bottle of laundry detergent, and resealable plastic bags are on that list. If you head out on the road (rug-rats or not), you might want to put it on yours too. “Just in case.”

I received information about Clorox’s Bleach It Away campaign and am sharing my messy moment for the chance to win prizes from The SITS Girls. To learn more about the messy moment program, check out www.BleachItAway.com. Sharing your story on the Clorox fan page gets you entered for the chance to win $25,000 and daily prizes, and you can grab a coupon for Clorox® Regular Bleach.

Indiana Wind Turbines have taken up large blocks of land along I-65 and beyond. After my first article detailing these majestic mammoths, I received emails and comments from little Indiana readers who just had to know more!

Your burning wind turbine questions have been answered, once again, by my hubby, Jeremy Nunemaker.

Indiana Wind Farms

Is it farm-able? If someone leases land to a wind turbine company, can they still farm it?
Absolutely. The footprint of a wind turbine, aka the base, takes up no more space than your average living room!

How noisy are these? If one goes up near my home, will I still be able to sleep at night?
Noise levels of modern wind turbines depends on details such as size, height, age, etc. As far as large commercial wind turbines, such as what you see along I-65, the most common noise is the whistle of the blades passing.

This makes sense when you realize the tips of those blades can be traveling around 300mph, however the sound produced is less than the noise produced by traffic passing a typical home.

Indiana Wind Farms: Turbines Near I65

How big and small are Indiana wind turbines?

Wind turbines range in size from small units that power single appliances such as a cell phone charger and are only as big as your hand to larger units that help power your home and can be the size of a sofa.

There are also commercial wind turbines that range from 40-50 ft tall all the way to the “latest and greatest” which are coming close to four hundred feet tall.

There are many companies out there that provide smaller wind turbines that help power residential homes or other small scale applications. An internet search for residential wind turbines would give you a list of these small turbine companies.

Are they only practical or available for sale in areas like Northwest Indiana with wide open flat space?
Wind turbines are applicable over a wide range of terrain, it’s hard to rule out a particular area simply because of its terrain.

Indiana Wind Turbines

Indiana is a good candidate for wind power because it is largely flat and open, however states such as West Virginia also have wind farms because of increased wind speeds present in the mountainous areas. The only way to know is to look into having a wind study done of your area.

You can also look into wind charts compiled in the past by the government. Many of these are dated but are a great place to start your search and help you decide whether or not wind power is an option in your area.

Over time what is the value or cost of energy that they produce compared with the costs of buying them?
In general, the value of a wind turbine is very hard to calculate. Energy production varies greatly due to the available winds for a particular site and therefore affects the value.

Wind Energy in Indiana

It’s a fast growing field and pretty incredible that Hoosiers, especially those in small Indiana towns, are such a crucial part of this green energy source.
little Indiana is challenging you to do a good deed. When you see someone at the side of the road? Stop to help!

Good Deed

As you probably guessed, we are frequently driving around from one Indiana town to another. We do run into car trouble every now and again both with and without the kids.

Our worst experience ever was when we were an hour from home and an hour from any family. We were stranded. It was hot. We were in the middle of literally nowhere. Let me back up a minute to say that the kids? Had had a very full day.

Kid #2 at that time was around 9 months old and still hadn’t slept more than an hour or two at a time. Each night. Every night. We were usually exhausted and the heat certainly wasn’t helping anything.

Indiana Mosquitos (As Big As Your Head!)

Where our car decided to die was swarming with mosquitoes…which both of our boys happen to be super allergic to. They don’t just get itchy bites, they get bites that swell up. They couldn’t get out of the car because of the bugs and inside of the car, with windows rolled down and trunk open, was hot. We had nothing to eat. It was ages before anyone stopped to see if we needed help.

In that case, hours later, family came to the rescue. I am pretty sure I listened to Kid #2 cry and scream from exhaustion and heat for almost four hours nonstop–the time when we finally made it into a house. I was beyond frazzled at that point.

We have vowed ever since that day to always stop to see if anyone by the side of the road needs help.

Helping Others

We’ve changed tires, we’ve jumped cars, and two weeks ago while heading down to Santa Claus, Indiana, we gave a woman a ride to her house. She had a cell phone but her hubby was in Chicago and her son wasn’t around either. It was hot out there. And her house? Was way the heck out in a small town in the country.

Believe you me, it’s easier to talk yourself into not stopping. To pretend that the person has a cellphone and has someone coming to get them. But you know what? In our experience so far, the majority has had no one. Like the guy we helped who was headed toward Kentucky.

He had two big dogs in his car, his tire had gone flat, it was unseasonably cold, and he didn’t have a jack–or a winter coat! We were on our way to the Indiana Tourism Media Marketplace but stopped anyway. We had a jack, hubs helped him change the tire, then followed him to the gas station to make sure his flat spare would get him there okay before continuing on.

Yes, we were on our way to do other things. Important Things. But–we stopped anyway. Wouldn’t it be nice if someone did the same for you?

I challenge you to do a good deed, to make someone happy, and to stop and assist when you see someone at the side of the road. If I’m alone? Probably not going to happen–but I will call, let someone know, and provide the mile marker they are near.

Been There. Done That.

We’ve all been there. Isn’t it time we stopped worrying about our schedules, our appointments, and even our “nice” clothes, and just help someone out when they need it most? Stopping has made me late each and every time. The conference started just fine without me. Santa Claus, Indiana didn’t go anywhere, either.

Stepping off my soapbox now. We can’t live our lives being afraid of what might happen. Do a good deed and help someone at the side of the road. It doesn’t mean they need your help, but they will be glad that someone bothered to even try!

Big news: little Indiana won the $2,000 Mom Central Grant! I found out back on May 2, but until the check actually got here? It just didn’t seem real. Thank you all!

Mom Central Grant Purpose

The Grant is to help build my vision for little Indiana. For now, I’m going to sit on my original plan for a year. Why?

Right now–I’m all about focusing on little Indiana. As in, full time kind of focusing! Since I will no longer be writing for other people, that means all of my creative energy can now go to the site!

What does this mean to you, dear reader? Well, I’m upping my posting schedule. I’m also going to up my traveling too. That means more small Indiana towns, more Indiana Festivals and Events, and all the Funnel Cake I can handle! I’m sort of kidding about the last one. Sort of.

little Indiana Businesses

I’m also revving up little Indiana Businesses. In case you hadn’t heard, little Indiana Businesses is my affordable option for you to get your business found.

How’s it work? $25 bucks a month gets you an ad that appears on every webpage for your county. Festivals, shops, restaurants, cafes–there’s a place for it on little Indiana Businesses.

Check out Rensselaer, Indiana to see what I mean. It’s along the side of the page (sidebar). Any time someone goes to a page in that county they will see YOUR ad.

Mom Central Grant Win

Notice it costs way less than print advertising–and helps you reach WAY more people! Pretty cool, eh? Whether someone is relocating or traveling through, they can find YOU first, easily.

It also comes with a mini-webpage featuring a photo gallery, downloadable content like a menu or flier from your business, and your monthly specials/sales! I’m working on the media packet, brochures, and all sorts of goodness.

Featuring little Indiana!

Since the awarding of the Mom Central Grant, I’ve been featured on a few sites! You can find those links listed below if you want to check it out.

What I’m basically saying that there are lots of exciting things in store for little Indiana readers. The best is yet to come!

Wind farms in Indiana towns are here, there, and everywhere! Okay, maybe that is a slight exaggeration but — there are a lot out there (particularly along I-65) and more popping up all the time.

Indiana Wind Farms

We get a lot of questions about Indiana wind farms because my husband was the wind farm whisperer. We live in a small town so everyone knows everything about everyone, don’t'cha know.

Before deciding to be the stay at home dad (yes, I work from home and yes, it was an adjustment, but it works for us) my husband was often the “go-to” guy when it came to problems with wind turbines.

He gave a talk at a church in Rensselaer, Indiana before and pretty much knows Indiana wind farms and the turbines inside them like he knows the back of his freckle-covered hand or the name of my favorite flower (daisy). Since there is so much interest in Indiana wind farms, I interviewed my hubby, Jeremiah Nunemaker, for the low-down on these giant green energy producers.

What is a Wind Turbine

Indiana wind turbines are giant monsters of steel. How big are Indiana wind turbines? Those you see around I-65 in Northwest Indiana are around 300 feet tall. Each blade of an Indiana wind turbine is 120+ feet and weighs 7 tons. Yes, that’s for each blade.

A wind turbine is supposedly tornado proof (though I don’t think I’d want to test that!). The wind turbine image to the top left may help you visualize the size of these. That is part of just one portion of the wind turbine and you can see how it dwarfs the lead truck! Many of these compose an Indiana wind farm.

While hubs was in the industry, there weren’t very many elevators and certainly no heating or cooling systems inside. The only way up is to climb! There are such things as wind advisories and those with wind turbine jobs were not allowed in the field when the wind reached 30 meters per second. Some Indiana wind turbines do have elevators but not the sort of elevator you are imaging–think tilty, shaky and the opposite of stable.

Green Energy

Indiana Wind Turbine: Fowler Ridge Wind Farm

You’ll hear people and companies boast that they are buying “green” power or energy however, they aren’t buying the literal power that is created by a wind turbine. What they buy is, for accounting purposes, the amount of energy produced by a wind turbine.

So, the power produced by a wind farm in Indiana can be purchased by a company or organization in Florida or California. The actual power used by a location is produced by a power plant local to that area. The energy is essentially purchased from the Indiana wind farm.

How a Wind Turbine Works

Driving through Indiana, wind turbines may seem like they are being powered by something other than wind. Nope. Each wind turbine moves solely due to the wind. The speed is controlled so that the power is uniform. The speed is actually controlled by several factors, one of which is the pitch of the blades.

Each Indiana wind turbine monitors the wind and adjusts itself accordingly. This is why you will see an entire farm of wind turbines moving at the same time.

A turbine can only adjust it’s rotation so many times before it has to unwind itself to prevent the wiring inside from winding too tightly. It can take 15 minutes for the Indiana wind turbine to make a full rotation.
