Arcadia, Indiana: Hedgehog Music Showcase

Think there’s not any real entertainment in a small town? Well, that couldn’t be further from the truth for folks who live in and around Arcadia, Indiana and the Hedgehog Music Showcase!

Performers come from far and wide to this lovely 100 plus year old building to put on a show.

little Indiana and hubby had the whole day to ourselves–and couldn’t believe our eyes when we saw the eye-catching mural on the side of the building. Live music every weekend? Enter the problem: it wasn’t the weekend and Hedgehog Music Showcase was closed!

Luckily, we happened to bump into resident super-talented photographer Sally Wolf who has a phenomenal studio upstairs with loads of State Fair ribbons on them. She ushered us inside and gave us the grand tour. What a tour it was!

Hedgehog Music Showcase is a venue that would make any small Indiana town proud! From the gleaming original wood flooring to the warm exposed brick and the piano waiting patiently in the corner, it is a gorgeous building.

But as nice as this Hamilton County attraction may be, it’s the events held within that are really incredible.

This tiny town with just over 1500 residents has attracted big music names like George Cole and Eurocana,  Adrian Legg (voted guitarist of the decade by Guitarist Magazine), and even Grammy award-winners!

With affordable ticket prices and on-site concessions, it’s a fantastic addition to downtown Arcadia. Don’t you just wish there was a Hedgehog Music Showcase venue in your town? I know I do.

You are probably surprised to see Wine and Spirits in Arcadia, Indiana on little Indiana.

But this isn’t your ordinary liquor shop. In fact, it’s not anywhere in the same league!

We only stepped inside this Hamilton County shop because, from the outside, it looked like a neat building. So, we browsed around the rest of the town while waiting until it opened.

When it did? We were so surprised by what we found! I don’t know about you, but I don’t usually call these shops “classy.” Until Wine and Spirits in Arcadia, that is!

Exposed brick walls, warm hardwood floors, and elegant tin ceilings–it’s a bright and airy place. In fact, during the renovation the owners discovered the tin ceiling. The original ice cooler is still in use today.

This isn’t a place where you’ll find well-known but sub-par liquors. No siree! Instead, you’ll find a selection of Indiana products as well as some really unique offerings.

The owners are not the type to shop based on labels. It has to taste good to make it in to this lovely building.

There’s plenty that you will recognize (and things that have locally been requested), but Wine and Spirits hopes to encourage others to step outside of the (wine) box and try something new, too.

With Indiana wines and spirits making an appearance at this Hamilton County shop too, there’s plenty of reasons to give it a go!

Hubs and I were kid-free on this small town trip so we got to really browse. There’s a great selection of old books, vintage toys, and an assortment of antique quilts and blankets that is really nice.

The books we found for our boys in this Arcadia, Indiana antique shop have turned into family favorites. Go poke around two floors of stuff and see what you can find! I’d love to hear about your treasure hunt success in the comments section below. This is little Indiana!

Her Arcadia, Indiana shop always has something going on. If she’s not spinning wool, she may be weaving a dishtowel or shawl. Otherwise, she might be teaching others!

Rag rugs, handbags, and fiber dyeing are a few topics that she has offered. As if that’s not enough, this Indiana weaver goes further in depth with workshops on things like twills, weaving your own coverlet, and the double weave. Impressive, right? Put it on your list!

My Chocolate Strawberry Cupcake was awesome–and hubs really enjoyed his Turtle Cupcake. I almost didn’t get a bite! Owner Cheryl Muir kindly places your choice in a small cup. That made it slightly easier to walk around Arcadia, Indiana.  Mess-free enjoyment!

So creatively topped, it’s no wonder that wedding planning guys and gals are opting for dozens of these delectable lovelies in place of the traditional cake. This is one Indiana town shop you’ll want to try again and again and again! Plan ahead–SugarBean Cupcakes closes when they sell out for the day.

Tabby Tree Weaver: Arcadia, Indiana

little Indiana (and usually family) have visited over 90 Indiana towns as of this writing–and we have never seen the likes of Tabby Tree Weaver before!

Colorful or subdued or glittery yarns, almost works of art themselves, adorn the shelves against the walls. Created materials are draped around the shop: a cream colored shawl here, a fuzzy purple scarf there, a plaid dishtowel over there.

Natural fibers look cloud soft from their place in bags and boxes around the front of the shop. You won’t find any synthetics here!

Looms and spinners take center stage. But Tabby Tree Weaver isn’t just for selling the materials, it’s to pass along the simple joy of knowing such a useful skill.

Owner Linda Adamson got her start thirty years ago when she was sewing her own clothes and “didn’t want to look like anyone else.” What better way to ensure individuality than by making your own fabric? Little did she know that that decision would lead to the bright and cozy shop that is Tabby Tree Weaver–or that she would instill a love of the loom in so many others!

Getting back to your roots, learning to become more self-sufficient, designing stylish clothing or accessories, well, those are just a few of the reason folks are taking classes at Tabby Tree Weaver.

With so many different ways to weave and so many interesting fibers to work with, the artistry of this craft is appealing.

I can easily see why so many people are going back to making their own scarves, dish towels, lighter than light soy shawls, rugs, and so much more.

Would you believe even I tried my hand at spinning? Let’s just say I had better stick with writing!  The whole foot pedal thing is more difficult than it looks. Or, perhaps, I just lack the necessary coordination! Joking aside, it looks like a very relaxing yet useful skill to possess!

Hartley Antiques and Furniture: Arcadia, Indiana

You’ll easily find this unique two-level Indiana antique shop and furniture store downtown.

When you step inside, you can’t NOT see the antique furniture. There’s a lot of big, beautiful pieces here! Sideboards, dressers, shelving. The pieces are in great shape.

A couple rows of brightly colored handmade quilts and blankets caught my eye. And an assortment of antique books. And shining Ball jars with a neat looking clasp on the top.

At Hartley’s Antiques and Furniture, you’ll find variety!

Indiana Antique Store

One half of this Hamilton County antique shop is devoted to antiques while the other half, which is in an attached building, is a mix of furniture and, you guessed it, more antiques!

The entire second floor will blow your mind. It is enormous! It looks like it was once an apartment but there’s all these cubicles as well…it’s really unusual and fun to poke through.

This is also where the gorgeous vintage headboards reside as well as many table and chair sets. You could furnish a home for a fraction of what you would pay in the big city! I couldn’t leave empty-handed this time.

I picked up a big bag of Legos for $20 that I’ll be holding onto until Christmas. I also snagged a handful of children’s books that I have never, ever, EVER seen before–and they are just the cutest things! I purchased: Alexander and the Magic Mouse, Mr. Tall and Mr. Small, and George and The Robbers among others. The boys just love them!

Hartley Antiques and Furniture: Arcadia, Indiana

This antique shop is huge, the owner is so nice–even  her son, who owns a local excavation company, stopped in to say “hey.” I love that small town atmosphere and I love Hartley’s Antiques and Furniture’s selection!

Make a short afternoon of it (if that’s all you can spare). Take the train and you’ll have an hour or two to spend in this cute Indiana town. Though in my opinion–that’s not nearly long enough!

SugarBean Cupcakes: Arcadia, Indiana A Plateful of Pretty

Amazing Indiana cupcake shops aren’t just in the big city don’t'cha know.

little Indiana and hubby ran inside SugarBean Cupcakes as soon as we got to Arcadia. I’m not even exaggerating.

It may have been, um, rather early in the morning for cupcakes but that didn’t stop us! I had heard good things about SugarBean Cupcakes–and couldn’t wait to begin my research!

To make up for breakfast we could have chosen something like French Toast Cupcakes or even Orange Dream Cupcakes. Vitamin C right? But then again, I am little Indiana and…when do I ever turn down chocolate for breakfast?

Indiana Cupcake Shops

SugarBean Cupcakes: Arcadia, Indiana

Chocolate and Strawberry Cupcakes, Turtle Cupcakes, Toasted Marshmallow Cupcakes, Going Bananas…are you drooling yet?

That’s just the tip of the buttercream frosting. Owner Cheryl Muir is always experimenting with new flavors and unique combinations in her adorable Indiana town shop.

You may also find Maple Pumpkin Cupcakes, Grasshopper Cupcakes, Sundae Surprise, or Oreo Birthday Cupcakes. But no matter what you choose, it will be beautifully decorated–and have a flavor to match!

I shopped by colors that day–and ended up with a Chocolate Strawberry Cupcake. Hubs went with the tremendously popular Turtle Cupcake.

There’s more than cupcakes at this Hamilton County shop. On our visit we saw Pumpkin Bread and Lemon Custard. You just never know what you will find! But at least you know that no matter what it is, it will be delicious!

You probably don’t need much urging on this one. I mean, homemade cupcakes are kind of a no-brainer, right?

Plan ahead. When SugarBean Cupcakes sell out (which they always do), they close for the day so they can begin preparations for the next one! Cheryl should be proud of her success. Oh how sweet it is!
