Pizza Haus: Batesville, Indiana

Pizza Haus in Batesville, Indiana beckoned–you know my great good love of pizza!

So, the family and I walked down the street from Sherman House Inn to check it out.

They call themselves a “pizza restaurant with a German flavor”.

Can you say, “Sauerkraut on pizza?” Well, we didn’t even notice that somehow (it was a long trip) and I so wish we had! How unique is that?

There were plenty of pizza choices–I guess we were distracted! We didn’t even think of ordering anything other than pizza.

Pizza Haus: Batesville, Indiana

So, while our sausage pizza from Pizza Haus was fine…I will need to make a return “research” trip to try a famous sandwich.

You can probably already guess what would make me come back, can’t you? Pizza Haus took the Reuben Sandwich, my favorite kind of sandwich, and gave it a twist.

Corned beef, turkey, pizza cheese, sauerkraut and mayonnaise on a rye bun…well, it certainly sounds like something I’d love!

They’ve got a few other sandwiches that Ripley County folks know to order: The Hausburger, Steak Hoagie, and Poor Boy: Pizza sauce, pizza cheese, tartar sauce and onions. Apparently it’s really popular with Batesville folks and I suppose it’s something I should try just to say I did.

So, yes, even the Poor Boy Hoagie sandwich is going on “the list!”

Pizza Haus: Batesville, Indiana

It’s very clean and tidy on the inside. The people were friendly–and the pizza was okay but it sounds like the real star here at Pizza Haus are the sandwiches!

I’ll be returning to this Ripley County restaurant but until then…you can torture me with tales of your favorite Pizza Haus menu item.

little Indiana had a chance to watch this wood carver at work. It was really amazing. What is just as amazing is the variety of carved things for sale.

From toy trucks and cars for the kids to Christian art  and Christmas ornaments, there is a lot here. You’ll want to browse through this fun Batesville, Indiana attraction–this is little Indiana!

Weberding’s Wood Carving Shop has been a Batesville, Indiana destination since 1942!

Don’t let the 22,000 square foot shop fool you: this is a true family affair.

It was a hobby at first. William Weberding was recovering from serious illness at the young age of six…and needed something to do to pass the time! I think you can guess that one.

Years pass and Weberding honed his skill and found a way to turn his hobby into a career. Though William Weberding has sadly passed away, his dream still lives on: his three sons now run the family business. Happily, there is a wood carver or two in the group.

With all that experience (and a great story) behind them, well, this is a mom and pop shop that you have to see to believe! It’s incredible. Really. It doesn’t hurt that Weberding’s Wood Carving shop is located in a super fun Indiana town, too!

You’ll find a wide range of hand-carved items in this large shop. We saw tiny ornaments and crosses to larger items like pieces of hand-carved furniture and even some big stuff in process of repair for an Indiana church!

It’s pretty incredible. little Indiana (that’s me!) got to go behind the scenes and see a wood carver at work.

Seeing him carving at figures with faces, well, it’s impressive to say the least. You know me and my lack of artsy skills! Stick figures are seriously a stretch but to see someone capable of turning a hunk of wood into a work of art? Makes me proud to be a Hoosier!

This Batesville, Indiana Inn has been in existence as an inn for so long that they use the catch phrase, “Stay where you great great grandparents could have stayed” and mean it.

Breakfast at this Indiana lodging option is served downstairs in the equally historic Sherman House Restaurant. The Apple Butter and Fried Biscuits were delicious! That’s a nice way to start your morning off the right way for sure!

Romweber Marketplace is like fifty bajillion shops rolled into one. Who needs the mall when you have this great Indiana shop?

Many vendors are located inside the sprawling historic building. I do mean many–and there’s room to grow. You never know what you’ll find!

Batesville, Indiana: Sherman House Inn

Located right downtown, this Indiana inn has been in business since 1852.

Originally known as The Brinkman House, the Inn changed hands a few times. At some point, it was renamed to honor General Sherman’s accomplishments during the Civil War–and became The Sherman House Inn.

Once a coaching tavern, you can imagine what a busy stop this must have been!

Walking down the long, narrow hallway on the second level, you can almost hear the rustling of Victorian clothing.

Our room was great! With notes in our room like the one to the right, you can see why we prefer to stay “little.” Only in a small Indiana town do they let you borrow a book and bring it back next time!

There were a lot of doorways–more like staying in a home than at an inn! The best part of all was the “secret” room on the second floor.

Down the long winding hallway lies a large room with sofas and tables. You’ll find Foosball, pool tables, a large TV, and a workout room!

We were so grateful for a place where the kids could run around! Hubs and I took turns showing off how unskilled we are when it comes to playing pool while the kids entertained themselves with a deck of cards and poker chips.

Go There

Ripley County has such phenomenal places to eat, shop, and stay. You have got to see this historic inn for yourself!

Christian’s Kinderladen is the best toy store I’ve seen yet! This is wall to wall (and floor to ceiling) toys. Believe me when I say that all of your favorites are here–including lots of great new stuff.

It’s so much fun. If there are kids on your list (or you need that perfect nostalgic toy), well, you only have to make one stop for them this Christmas!

Batesville, Indiana: Christian's Kinderladen Unique Childrens Gifts and Toys

Batesville, Indiana has the best toy store I have ever seen: Christian’s  Kinderladen. Wall to wall unique gifts and toys for kids! It’s a toy extravaganza!

Named for the owner’s grandson, she started the shop when she had a hard time finding really good toys for him.

Walking into this Indiana toy store? Is what it must feel to stroll around Santa’s workshop!

It’s bright, it’s colorful, and it’s full of  the most incredible toys. She’s definitely hit the mark!

Kid #1 had been going on about the toy store off and on for hours. To add fuel to the fire, our room at the history-filled Sherman House Inn faced Christian Kinderladen’s front window.

We knew we had to get in to this Ripley County shop–or suffer the consequences!

I’m so glad we had a chance to wander around inside before continuing on our little Indiana trip.

There’s really good stuff here! These aren’t the type of things you see at the big box shops. It’s more the sort of toys you think are out there but can’t ever seem to find.

Small Indiana towns win again! This toy store? Has it all!

Melissa and Doug, Sock Monkeys, Kitchens and play food, costumes from Aeromax (who rock, by the way), and so many more.

Seriously, hubs and I were as bad as the kids! We had such a good time browsing around. The owner reassured us from the start that it’s okay to touch them–good thing since Kid #2 (toddler) was with us!

Young or old, I think you’ll get a kick out of the toy offering. There’s a lot of new classic toys here, too. We absolutely loved it and can’t wait to go back and play!

Batesville, Indiana: Romweber Marketplace Inside Looking Out

The RomWeber Marketplace in Batesville, Indiana is in an incredible building.

Four stories tall, it demands attention. Fortunately for this old furniture manufacturing facility, it has been re-purposed into the ultimate shopping hub: 40,000 square feet of vendor space!

This building is beautiful. When we coasted around the town, I couldn’t wait to get out of the car and get in there!

It is the new hub of activity in the small Indiana town of Batesville.

With handsome hardwood flooring that is original to the building spanning across the length of the first floor, along with exposed brick, and fabulous large windows–it’s a beautiful, airy hub at that!

RomWeber Marketplace History

Batesville, Indiana: RomWeber Marketplace Antique

Back in 1879, this very large facility shared its space with three new companies: American Furniture Company, Batesville Cabinet Company, and Batesville Coffin Company.

That would be bedroom furniture, dining room furniture, and coffins! I guess they covered the bases.

With a shared sales team, they sold and shipped products across the country. When the depression hit, they manufactured five pound fruitcake boxes just to survive.

For World War II, they produced ammo boxes, pontoons, and office furniture for the officers!

RomWeber Marketplace Today

According to their brochure, presidents, Saudi royalty, and governors’ mansions have possessed RomWeber furniture.

You can still find dorm rooms that boast furniture from the company’s manufacturing days.

Now? Vendors of all kinds have taken up residence in the old factory.

Batesville, Indiana: Romweber Marketplace Breezeway

There’s many unique Indiana antiques here! Furniture to jewelry, books, crafts, and even handmade items also have a place here. Give yourself plenty of time to browse! Seriously, the selection is awesome.

There is still plenty of available booth space–which is exciting! Every visit can bring something new and unexpected. How fun is that?

Just note that while the flooring is beautiful, like any other historic building, it has its quirks. If you are not sure-footed, it’s something to watch.

If you need to take a break or want a bit of entertainment? The RonWeber Marketplace has an ice cream parlor and arcade! My tip? Bring a bag of checkers–the ice cream parlor tables have checker boards painted on them! Would that be a fun surprise for kids or what?
