Hilltop Drive In in Cambridge City, Indiana

Cambridge City, Indiana folks have been visiting Hilltop Drive In for more than sfds years.

Set on a bit of a hill, this mom and pop shop has been providing area folks with sweet treats and food served fast for decades.

You will find an assortment of items on their menu perfect for lunch or dinner (I hear the chicken cutlet is a local favorite) But for little Indiana and family this time around, cold drinks were in order!

We stopped by and had a tough decision to make: do we get ice cream kind of stuff that sounds really, really good or do we just get something a little easier to take along in the car.

In the end we went with milkshakes for all! Well, except for me. I actually got a slushie.

There are pork tenderloin sandwiches (both breaded and grilled) on the menu. Patty melt, grilled cheese, and a handful of others round out the real food offerings here.

When it comes to ice cream, they’ve got a fun selection! Flurries are available in flavors that range from Turtlette, Chocolate Covered Cherry (now that is something I need to try!),  peanut butter cup, chocolate chip, and plenty more! Doesn’t that sound wonderful?

Of course, your standard dairy desserts are also on the menu. Sundaes, parfaits, and one of my favorites: the banana split!

Hungry? Hot? Snacky? Hilltop Drive In in lovely Wayne County is the perfect place to enjoy your favorite treats.

Further proof that good things are found in small packages. Small towns: destinations, not drive-thrus. I’m Jessica Nunemaker and this is little Indiana!

little Indiana on PBS in Cambridge City, Indiana

little Indiana is back on PBS with a new segment! This time I explore Cambridge City, Indiana!

This Wayne County town is big on great antiques, home of one of the best pork tenderloin sandwiches I have ever eaten, and so much charm. Really, it’s just a lovely, lovely town!

This and That Antiques and More in Cambridge City, Indiana

This and That Antiques in Cambridge City, Indiana certainly lives up to its name!

Inside this quaint antique shop, you’ll find exactly that: this and that.

This and That Antiques in Cambridge City, Indiana

It’s another stop on Indiana’s Antique Alley. There’s always something interesting hiding behind that book or under that table.

What a range of stuff! On the same shelf you may see something industrial, something primitive, and something country.

It’s pretty fun to look around this Wayne County antique shop. I know our boys kept pointing out the unique gadgets and things that caught their eyes!

In fact, we stumbled upon an old arcade racing game! How fun would that be?

There was also a visually appealing old plastic milk crate full of soda bottles. The colors of them, the reds and greens and browns, made me wish I were a bit more crafty so I could actually put them to good use!

But even so, browsing around this Indiana antique shop, we had a really good time.

Have you ever seen such a great sign in an Indiana town? Now that’s a good reuse and repurposing of an every day item. I love it!

Cambridge City, Indiana Post Office New Deal WPA Art

There’s a gorgeous mural in Cambridge City, Indiana. It’s not in an art gallery or hanging in an Indiana town museum.

This one is found at the Cambridge City Post Office!

“Pride of Cambridge City” Mural

Those in the know may realize that the horse featured in this mural is none other than Single G, once a very famous racehorse!

Single G held the world’s record for pacing horses.

So, how exactly did this lovely mural end up inside of a post office? Simple. It was all because of the WPA, the Works Progress Administration, that provided jobless folks with a hand up.

Artists competed for the chance to paint. In an open competition, well, as the saying goes, “may the best (wo)man win!” In this case, it was Samuel Hershey.

Completed November 27, 1941, the finished product measured 9 foot 6 inches by 4’6″ and cost $750.

After a Post Office was built, they could allocate funds for a mural–over one thousand post offices around the country joined in. Isn’t it lucky that this Wayne County post office had the funding!

The next time you find yourself in a small Indiana town post office: look up. You may be surprised to see an amazing 1940′s work of art!

Blue Ridge Antiques: Cambridge City, Indiana

Downtown Cambridge City, Indiana is full, I mean FULL of great antique shops like Blue Ridge Antiques.

With two floors in this tidy, refurbished building, it’s a lot of fun!

Now this antique shop was full of nice people and browsers. The kids, hubs, and I had fun looking at the pieces of furniture and picking out our favorites.

Of course, the Indiana antiques artfully placed here and there caught our attention as well.

It’s hard to believe that this homey shop was once the site of an old saloon–but there ya go. I just love knowing the history of buildings, don’t you?

Blue Ridge Antiques: Cambridge City, Indiana

Located on the Old National Road, well, there’s a reason why Cambridge City is part of Antique Alley–and it’s because of great shops like this one!

You wouldn’t think that so many antique shops in one location could manage but when they are all done so very well and all manage to be so very different, it just works out.

Blue Ridge Antiques certainly holds it own!

Well organized and featuring a variety of local products, this farmer’s market is a new addition to Cambridge City, Indiana–and takes place Saturday mornings at historic Huddleston House. It’s a great way to combine a historical attraction with local vendors.

With ample parking and shade and a great variety of vendors already, it’s something that I can easily see as becoming very big in the very near future! There’s plenty of room for expansion at Huddleston House–and I’m sure they are going to need it.

For starters, this Wayne County restaurant is very kid friendly. With a selection of small toys to play with before the meal arrives as well as a crayons and a hat to color, the kids stayed entertained.

For another–there’s more than a few good entree choices! I watched something called the Pony Shoe (or an equally unusual name) go by the table. You can see that delectable-looking plate below. Thanks for letting me snap a pic! Anything covered in cheese fries sounds like a good idea to me. With a menu that includes a perfect pork tenderloin sandwich, how can you resist Lumpy’s Cafe?

Two, and perhaps even three, of the Huddleston sons served in the war. It must have been an exhausting time for the family in what is now Cambridge City, Indiana!

When you tour the home, you can imagine the sound of soldiers clopping their way along the road, the sound of the train in the distance. It’s an amazing bit of Indiana history and something you should definitely see for yourself.
