This place is humongous! With more than 70 different kinds of scents to choose among, you will be amazed at the variety!

Baked Brown Sugar, Caramel Coffee Cake, Hot Apple Butter, and Snickerdoodle may sound like goodies available at the Stone Hearth Cafe located inside, but you would be wrong!

Centerville, Indiana Arches

But it’s not called the “City of Arches” for nothing–there’s something very unique found on a handful of buildings.

Once upon a time, the main drag through town was 100 feet wide (which is really rather big in case you didn’t know). That was changed to the current 65 foot width and folks along the road were able to add on to their homes.

Built between 1832 and 1836, you will find a series of five arches scattered around this perfectly scenic town. Unlike the majority of us Hoosiers, there aren’t really front yards in Centerville.

Instead, these arches gave folks access to their backyards and in some cases, let their horse through, too.

I woke up bright and early (and I mean EARLY) during our Wayne County trip so I could poke around and take images around the town without a bunch of cars or people in my way. This time I didn’t even take Kid #1–he was still sleeping!

Centerville is such a joy to walk through! The houses are so gorgeous and it’s just a lot of fun.

I ambled all over the place. Lucky for me I also had a map of where to find the arches that you can find at various points around the area. It took out a lot of the guesswork! Even though you know me and my map-reading abilities–I did just fine. I located everything I was looking for and plenty of things that I wasn’t!

Even so, without a map you will still do just fine. The arches are centered around the Historic National Road.

There are many reasons to visit Centerville, Indiana. It’s on Indiana’s antique trail, it’s a lovely town, and there are all sorts of neat architectural elements dotted around the downtown.

Centerville has more than 100 buildings listed on the National Register of Historic Places so it doesn’t look like your typical Indiana town either. Really, you need to see it!

The Olde Brass Hog Antiques: Centerville, Indiana

Just a block away from adorable downtown Centerville, Indiana lies The Olde Brass Hog Antiques.

It’s another house turned Indiana antique shop and this one is a good living-room sized treasure trove of stuff!

Owner  Ron Dixon may have won the 2006 award for Centerville’s Permanent Grouch during the Archway Days Festival and has been quoted as telling the Archway Days Festival folks that “Every day of my life I’ve been working for this.”

But don’t let that scare you away. At least, not until you’ve had a chance to browse his antique-filled shop!

I don’t think Ron is grouchy, per se, I just think he has a strong opinion as to the way folks need to treat one another–and feels very strongly if a boundary is crossed.

For our part, my husband, Jeremy, and our two boys enjoyed our time at The Olde Brass Hog.

Indiana Antiques

The Olde Brass Hog Antiques: Centerville, Indiana

This Wayne County antique shop has a very eclectic mix of items. Besides larger pieces of furniture, there’s a lot of books and knick-knacks and art. Lots and lots of art.

In fact, the walls are covered in all sorts of art prints. There’s a few wonderful finds on the walls!

Poke around. There’s more here than you may think at first. Great antiques are hiding all over the place!

It’s easy to find–just look for the pig-shaped sign hanging from the building.

He’s open daily or by chance. You just never know what you will find!

From the outside, you wouldn’t think that this home turned gift and Indiana antique shop would contain so many unique art finds nestled  in among an antique or two…but it absolutely sure does!

In fact, this Centerville, Indiana antiques and more shop holds the art of three daughters of the owner. Paper mache, painting, teddy bears and more–it’s amazing to see what these Hoosier artists have created!

Something about this place just oozes creativity. It’s airy and bright and the main room is full of finished pottery. There are so many different styles in earthy colors. You’ll want to save plenty of time for browsing this Centerville, Indiana shop.

Pottery in various stages of completion take up residence in the back of the working studio. It’s pretty neat to see the before and after at this Wayne County attraction!

Centerville, Indiana may seem like a sleepy, small town but it certainly holds its own when it comes to fun shops like White River Architectural Salvage and Antiques!

Easy to walk and full of great shops (with room for more!), Indiana antique lovers will need to add Centerville to their list.

If there were ever a shop that was so completely unexpected, it would be White River Architectural Salvage and Antiques!

When we walked inside, the owner was so nice–and handed the boys a choice of two small toys: they choose the whistles.

Now that is a piece of brilliant business ownership (whether she realized it or not). At no point could our boys wander away from us without us knowing about it! We constantly heard where they were and so could instantly tell them to get back by our side. That means no potential damage to gorgeous antiques. See? Brilliant!

You see, at White River Architectural Salvage and Antiques, it’s very, very easy to get sucked into browsing that you forget you even have kids with you. This Wayne County antique shop holds so many reclaimed items…it will make your head spin!

Indiana Antiques

We saw gorgeous fireplace mantles, a huge variety of lighting fixtures hanging overhead, and more tables, cabinets, and cupboards than you can shake a stick at.

I think I added more than a few “must-haves” to my list–as did my husband!

We felt like kids in a candy store as we tromped around the large shop. Room opened up into room and each one was better than the last.

As owners of an old Victorian home (112 this year), it seems like there’s always something we could use–and at White River Architectural Salvage and Antiques, we actually found it!

Shafer Stoneware Pottery: Centerville, Indiana

Having no real artistic skill myself (even stick figures are a stretch), stepping inside of Scott Shafer’s stoneware studio in Centerville, Indiana was jaw-dropping.

Now THIS is an art studio! Long tables, tall shelves, pottery, and all the things that go into making these one of a kind works of functional art are all around.

Although Scott couldn’t give us the grand tour, he left the door open (as is the small Indiana town way, don’t'cha know!) so we could take a peek around.

In this sunny studio, well, how could you not feel inspired? Scott’s pottery is all around. Holding a bunch of bright daisies, or leafy plants, a bunch of pears, or a wooden spoon. There’s shelves of mugs and plates and fruit bowls.

In other words, this pottery isn’t meant to sit there and look pretty, oh no! It’s meant to be used!

For over thirty years Scott Shafer has been making pottery.

He’s been featured in various publications over the years and has truly made a name for himself. When you look around, you can easily see why.

Each item looks so carefully crafted and made to last.

Hopefully you have better luck than we did and can catch Scott in the process of creating future bowls, vases, and plates. That would be fun to watch!

Enchanted Sleigh: Centerville, Indiana

You should know that The Enchanted Sleigh in Centerville, Indiana is not a Christmas shop.

The next thing you should know is that it is full of great gifts and home decor!

Centerville, Indiana: Enchanted Sleigh

It had been a long, very full trip. I admit, I was finding it harder and harder to hop out of the car each time to do my thing. We almost skipped The Enchanted Sleigh! That thought makes me cringe.

Because, well, when you step inside this Indiana gift shop? You will be so impressed! Shop owner Norma was such a lovely lady and pointed out some of her favorite original art pieces and one of a kinds. Our chat with her was just as fun as browsing through her shop!

She is the mother of a family of artists! Susan Brack, Rachel Sharp, and Connie Toschlog are her two daughters and a granddaughter. Although they each work in different mediums (paper mache, folk art, painting, and more) her daughters have each achieved recognition in various media publications. It is amazing!

For those of you that follow along in the art world, you may remember that Susan Brack didn’t have formal training. As a stay at home mom, she started making art for friends, eventually growing her art into a business. Now her work has been featured in major books and magazines. Isn’t that a wonderful story?

Indiana Antiques

Enchanted Sleigh: Centerville, Indiana

There’s so much here! Our boys were kept entertained by the very large, very sweet shelter rescued Maine Coon/Raggamuffin mix cat Bear. Rather, this friendly guy had all of our attention at one point or another.

But, vintage brooches were calling my name! The Enchanted sleigh has a whole lot of them. Apparently, some new thing that girls getting married are doing is to make bouquets of pins. I’d love to see what that looks like!

This Wayne County shop has plenty of traffic from brides-to-be on the hunt for pins–because she has so many! Yes, even I went home with, um, more than one or two. They are definitely priced right.

Stone Heart Cafe in Centerville, Indiana is certainly not located in your typical restaurant-type setting.

You’ll find this delicious Wayne County restaurant inside the Warm Glow Candle Company Outlet!

Centerville, Indiana: Stone Hearth Cafe

What do you do when the economy takes a nose-dive and your small business is having trouble staying in business?

Well, when Warm Glow Candle Outlet (also in Centerville, Indiana) offers you an opportunity to move your cafe inside of their large space, you take it! Stone Hearth Cafe moved inside the lofty building in this small Indiana town and now dish out amazing menu items.

The boys and I ordered pizza: Sausage and Cheese for them and a separate Mediterranean pizza for me. Mine was loaded with Feta cheese, chicken, black olives, and more. It was delicious! The pizza-holic that I am, I had to give the boys’ pizza a taste as well. I am pleased to report that it met my pizza standards as well. It was very good. I really like the crust.

Hubs ordered the Beef Brisket Sandwich. It’s only available Friday and Saturday. It’s not only a family recipe, but it’s smoked right here at Stone Hearth Cafe. Mmm…nothing beats a commercial smoker–this one was even specially made.

Dining Inside Warm Glow Candle Company

Stone Hearth Cafe: Centerville, Indiana

It’s definitely a different sort of atmosphere here. Stone Hearth Cafe is tucked away inside. A grouping of chairs and tables are situated in front of the long counter area.

So, it makes for great people watching but not so much for a private lunch. There’s always the murmur of voices here and it’s generally very entertaining for any younger kids in your group–while the food is sure to hold a grown-ups attention!

While I don’t normally post about dessert and I prefer to reveal it in a later images article, in the case of this cafe, you won’t want to wait for dessert. I’ll just leave you with the image above for right now but I will say this: there is pie.
