The Porch Cafe and Books in Danville, Indiana is one of the few places little Indiana and family have ever entered that boasted a completely organic menu.

Everything was so fresh and delicious at this Danville, Indiana cafe. Keeping their menu short and sweet means that each and every homemade entree receives the proper attention!

Oh–and if you are a larger group, get a pitcher of tea to share. I can vouch for the goodness of the peach tea. I think I drank three full glasses of the stuff!

Best Cookie Recipes: S'mores Cookies

There is nothing easier to make than a S’more–but these S’mores Cookies Recipe, though only slightly more work, don’t require a campfire!

Soft and chewy, they are incredible warm from the oven. It is impossible to only eat one (or two or four, whatev).

What could be more fun to bring to carry-ins or the annual neighborhood block party than these tasty little bites of childhood baked right in? Nothing!

S’Mores Cookies Recipe

Best Cookie Recipes: S

Prep Time: 30 minutes

Cook Time: 10 minutes

Total Time: 2 hours

Yield: At Least 3 Dozen Cookies

Serving Size: 1

No campfire needed for this unique twist on a classic! Delicious!

Recipe is from Midwest Living/June 2012.

Ingredients

4 Cups Regular Rolled Oats
1 1/2 Cups Flour
1 Cup Graham Crackers, Finely Crushed
1 teaspoon Baking Soda
1 teaspoon Baking Powder
1 teaspoon Ground Cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon Salt
1 Cup Butter, Softened
1 Cup Brown Sugar, Packed
1/2 Cup Sugar
2 Eggs
1/4 Cup Milk
1 Tablespoon Vanilla Extract
1 7-ounce Jar Marshmallow Creme
42 Milk Chocolate Kisses, Unwrapped and Ready to Go!

Instructions

Combine Oats, Flour, Graham Crackers Crumbs, Baking Soda, Baking Powder, Cinnamon, and Salt. Set aside.
In large bowl of electric mixer, beat Butter for 30 seconds.
Add in Brown and Regular Sugars.
Beat in Eggs, Milk, and Vanilla Extract.
Beat in Flour, as much as you can, stirring in remaining flour with wooden spoon.
Chill, covered, for 1 to 4 hours.
Drop dough by rounded Tablespoonfuls 2" apart on lightly greased (or parchment lined) cookie sheets.
Bake Cookies in 375* oven for 8 minutes.
Using back of a teaspoon measuring spoon, make an indention in each cookie top as soon as you take them out of the oven!
Dab on 1 teaspoon Marshmallow Creme onto the center of each cookie.
Top with a Chocolate Candy Kiss, pointed side DOWN.
Return cookies to the oven and bake 2 or 3 minutes more or until edges are light brown.
Cool on the cookie sheet for a minute before moving to wire racks to finish cooling.

Notes

Yes, this uses 1 Tablespoon of Vanilla Extract. That is not a typo.

Walking around downtown Madison, Indiana, an old-fashioned looking fruit cart caught my eye.

So in we stepped to A. Dattilo Fruit Company in the heart of Madison.

I felt like I stepped into an episode of Sesame Street! A green grocer right downtown? Incredible!

What was even more incredible were the prices and selection. But I guess after being around for so many years: you know what you are doing.

For over eighty years they’ve been keeping this Indiana town (and beyond) well stocked in fresh fruit and veggies.

An Apple a Day

Here at A. Dattilo Fruit Company, you are surrounded by Indiana history. I don’t just mean the sheer age of this Indiana fruit market, either.

You can’t not notice the town memorabilia posted up around the walls. What great photos!

That’s what I love about small business like this one in Jefferson County, those mom and pop shops.

There aren’t any strict guidelines to follow, no corporate rules to go by–if it’s something that a small biz owner likes and enjoys…they put it up.

To me, that’s infinitely more interesting! It’s never been more apparent than here.

What is little Indiana? If you’ve ever wondered where the idea for little Indiana came from, what our trips look like, and want to take a peek at Wabash, Indiana–this video answers all.

I’m excited to announce the release of the travel vignette produced by Jesse Harper of JBH Productions! And, yes, that is my very own front porch.

This is only a taste of what’s to come! Remember the little Indiana travel series pilot pitch has been filmed and is currently in the editing room. So, think of this as a warm-up, an introduction of what’s ahead.

We’ll need your help to make that dream a reality!

Can you imagine if we could little Indiana it up in your town on camera? If I could do more than show you a photo of the great places I’ve been but to present you with video?

If I could take you through scenic downtown Madison, or Nappanee, or Vevay all on film? If I could get some of our best festivals, like Charley Creeks Arts Fest, Earl Park, the Potato Creek and Strawberry Festival, or Delphi’s Transportation Festival (and about a hundred others) in the face of a different kind of audience.

Boner Bridge is a phenomenal bridge.

This Indiana bridge is very tucked away in Hatfield, Indiana–but completely worth the trip. We got lost as usual, but wow–what a bridge.

Still in use today, it’s an amazing Indiana attraction. They just don’t make ‘em like they used to!

Don Sedberry is an Indiana blog named for its author: Don Sedberry!

This blog covers a wide range of topics, from education to technology, to creative writing and the definition of evil (which takes the shape of Teletubbies, and I so agree)–in a thought-provoking and usually humorous way.

Read it not only because it’ll get your brain thinking, but because he married one of my high school best friend’s sister! So, you know, he’s good people.

Indiana Blogs: Don Sedberry

Why did you start Don Sedberry, the Blog?
When I started my current website, Don Sedberry, I didn’t have the faintest idea what I was eventually going to do with it. I started out with an idea in my head that I would post some course work, graphic designs, and make it an online portfolio/resume. How boring!

In late 2011, I started putting together a list of potential New Year’s resolutions. This list continued to grow until it was no longer a list of resolutions but a roadmap for following my heart. I changed my New Year’s Resolution from a convoluted mess into three simple words. “Just Do It.”

Instead of talking about it, I just started doing. I attended writing workshops, I started writing again and I began the blog featured here.

It is my intent that my blog serve as a voice of both my mind and the other “creatives” in hiding who might need just a little gentle nudge of encouragement to pursue their passions.

I’ve been blogging, off and on, since 2002. My other blogs were mostly personal reflections and anonymous experiments in writing styles. This time, I have decided to share who I am without the guise of a pseudonym.

What about that name? What made you decide to blog under your actual name?
In retrospect, I always wanted my website to be a résumé. What better way is there for people to fully understand who I am than to also allow them to see what I am passionate about through my blogging?

What are three of your most favorite posts?
You know, that is an excellent question! I hadn’t really thought about it before now.

Fear and the Pursuit of Dreams
This post is about how tough it is to face down your fears and really do the stuff that dreams are made of. I talk about how I dreamed about being a writer and how I always allowed my fear of rejection to shoot down those thoughts in my head. Also, I discuss taking the chances necessary to make your dreams possible.
Boredom and the Art of Procrastination
In this one I write about a discovery made in boredom and how what you do when you’re bored being a good predictor for the things you really should be doing. All that “fun” stuff you do when you do when you’re procrastinating is most likely a good sign of the work you really want to be doing.
Unleashed: A curious bit of follow up
This is one of my favorites, but it’s not about creativity as some of my other posts are. It covers some of my thoughts. It’s actually a follow-up to a previous post that in which I didn’t quite get my point across. This was one of my learning moments while blogging. I was too afraid of everyone’s reactions to the first post, It’s a Curious Bit of Culture, to write what I was really thinking and feeling. Instead of writing the post that I intended to write I ended up doing a lot of fence-sitting. In “Unleashed,” I get off the fence. I really loved writing the post and learning the very valuable lesson about my writing.

What keeps you ready and raring to post? Why do you blog?
My wife, Laura, can certainly tell you that I have my fair share of thoughts. I am fairly certain that I drive her crazy the way I constantly process and analyze everything from advertisements to song lyrics. With all these thoughts rolling around in my head, there’s usually enough material for three to four posts at any given time.

I write as a therapy to get those thoughts out, to maybe help someone else, and to save Laura from hearing all about it! A teacher I had growing up told me something that has stuck with me for a long time. She told me, (paraphrasing) “It does not matter to me whether or not I reach everyone in the class. It only matters that I reach someone. That someone is all that matters.”

That’s how I view my blog, if it helps one person, if it makes even the smallest difference, I’m happy. If my readers enjoy the post, I’m happy. I’m happy because I am writing.

Are there any topics rattling around that you feel like you should write but have put off because it’s too hard or too soon?
There is! “Education: Why I no longer care about my degree?” It’s tough to write because there are so many factors in the cost of education and so many theories out there. I am very excited about the challenge.

How did you find writing? Have you always been a writer?
As long as I can remember, I have been writing. My mother likes to remind me that there are a couple of sheets of paper in a cedar chest that suggest I’ve been writing stories for as long as I’ve been able to express myself with words on paper.

Does that mean I’ve always been a writer? I’d like to think so. Have I always been true to what I am? No, and that’s why my blog exists. It serves as a reminder to me and hopefully as an inspiration to others.

If you had to name five authors as your all time faves…who would they be?

Rainer Marie Rilke – A friend gave me a copy of “Letters to a Young Poet” and I can honestly say it changed everything for me.

Charles Dickens
Chuck Palahniuk
Michael Crichton

A co-op of artists, it’s also your go-to Hendricks County locale to take classes of all kinds and to shop these diverse Indiana artists!

This building has such a great feel. There’s excellent lighting and certainly phenomenal decor! When you walk in, you are entirely surrounded by all sorts of fabulous art.

From nature photography to portraits, they’ve got a nice representation of various fields.

But for me, the best part is seeing how many fantastic Hoosier artists are in the area!

Indiana Art Gallery

Yes, there are a lot of paintings and pictures on the (exposed brick!) walls, but it’s the shelving here, there, and everywhere inside this Indiana town gallery that’s really impressive.

It’s loaded with products of all kinds made and produced by Hoosiers.

Jewelry, ceramics, wood, fibers, metal, and more–there’s probably a talented artist here working with it!

It might seem unusual to find the arts in a small town. But for those of you that regularly follow along in the adventures of little Indiana and family, you’ve probably noticed a real push back to the basics: supporting local.

Gallery on the Square is a superb gallery. The small town prices feel pretty good too!

Rotating events throughout the year, including wine tastings and live music, once again prove that the arts are very much alive in little Indiana–and that there is far more to Hoosier life than corn and race cars!
