My short segment highlights one small Indiana town each time–just like what I do on little Indiana except for the film crew, microphones, scripts, and studio time. That’s the pep talk I give myself before filming anyway. Ahem.

In Classic Revival style, this Vevay, Indiana gem boasts massive columns, a front porch complete with pediment, and a general symmetrical design. In other words? It’s formal, simple, and lovely to behold!

If you remember from my last article, the courtroom still possess original furnishings and the outside? Well, it’s not every day you see a six-sided outhouse!

In fact, there is so much Indiana history here that they possess two buildings, and a third one is currently in progress of restoration! It is a phenomenal look back into the beginnings of this bustling river town.

The highlight for me had to be the steamboat models crafted by a local. They are simply incredible–and a hit with kids, too! There’s a lot of ground to cover here. You’ll want to allow yourself plenty of time to browse!

Switzerland County Museum: Vevay, Indiana

One of Indiana’s oldest historical societies (it was formed in 1925), this is a well-organized, well-preserved, and extensive look into the past!

We noticed the cute little building as we drove around Vevay. When we finally had a moment to stop in, we couldn’t believe how big it was–and that the Switzerland County Museum was housed in two buildings!

What’s particularly neat about this Indiana town museum is that one of the buildings is a Presbyterian Church–and part of the museum has been housed inside since 1970.

When I say church, I mean it! After browsing through the lower level of Vevay artifacts, you’ll climb up the stairs, past the working rope for the church bell, and head into the sanctuary–which hasn’t changed a bit since 1970.

The 1860 church was donated to the historical society with the stipulation that they do not alter the sanctuary which includes the gorgeous colorful glass windows! It’s a peek into the past that I haven’t seen before.

Switzerland County Museum: Vevay, Indiana

Now as to the artifacts, the Switzerland County Museum certainly has plenty! From shelving out of a post office to a mastadon tusk, old farm tools and housekeeping items, to an incredible quilt that detailed the names of county residents perhaps of a particular church–all 313 of them, it’s just incredible and apparently a bit of a mystery.

The other building, the old parsonage, is the Life on the River Ohio River Museum. It’s wonderful!

There are gleaming glass cases of these highly detailed steamboat models created by a resident of Switzerland County many decades ago. Our boys were impressed–and so were we.

It’s an informative and entertaining look at the river when steamboats, flatboats, and towboats ruled. For a town that is thought to have as many as 18 steamboat stops, you can see why it’s kind of a big deal!

Go There

Switzerland County Museum in Vevay, Indiana

Both of our boys loved both part of this museum! Kid #1 rang the bell and loved browsing through the collection of fossils, old tools, and the steamboat models while Kid #2 didn’t know what to think but sure grinned the whole time.

Why fight the crowds and traffic in the big city when there is history and legend all around you? Visit the Switzerland County Museum for an amazing look back at this important period of Indiana history.

In case you hadn’t heard, Indiana wine is something else! You’ll be happy to hear that The Wine Cellar has it!

Indiana Wine

There’s plenty of big city wineries out there–but have you tasted anything from the small towns yet?

You’ll discover bottles from towns like Bristow, French Lick, Rising Sun, and Corydon, Indiana (among many others).

Lucky for me, the owner kindly refilled my glass. Can you guess what I tried?

Yes, I got a bit of White Zinfandel from a souvenir bottle. Those were selling like hotcakes!

Good Grapes in Indiana

Don’t worry–they didn’t use the grapes I stomped at the Media Celebrity Grape Stomp in any Indiana wine so you you can rest easy. Kidding aside, I think you’ll enjoy browsing.

More than just buying a great bottle of small town wine, you can also take part in a wine tasting here at The Wine Cellar.

You might even catch live entertainment. Now how is that for fun!

Moorefield Market is a general store.But more than a place to get groceries, etc. it’s the local hangout. It also has the best ever homemade potato chips (eat ‘em with Ranch).

You know how much I like a good Indiana general store–and Moorefield Market is so much fun! Great owners,  great stuff, and awesome food. What more do you need?

But, somehow–I did. The Swiss Wine Festival in Vevay, Indiana was something else! There’s nothing quite like smooshing cold, clumpy grapes with your feet!

In case you were wondering, here’s a closer look at this giant festival in Switzerland County. Mark it on your calendar now–it’s such a fun Indiana town festival! You can’t go wrong  with a festival devoted to wine.

Vevay, Indiana: Roxanos Restaurant

Vevay, Indiana and Roxano’s Restaurant catches our eye.

little Indiana must have an internal homing beacon related to pizza. No matter where I am, if there’s good pizza, like Roxano’s Restaurant in Vevay? I will find it!

The Swiss Wine Festival was still going on yet Roxano’s Restaurant was hopping! Now that is the sign of a great place to eat.

Spacious though the seating was, they were really busy. So, we elected to get our order to go and head to the Courthouse lawn just down the street.

We thought the kids might enjoy a chance to run around. We needed a chance to chit chat without interruption, too. There will be more on the exceptional Courthouse in Vevay, but for now? Let’s get back to the grub!

Indiana Pizza

Vevay, Indiana: Roxano's Restaurant Breadsticks

We started with their Garlic Buttered Breadsticks. It’s research don’t'cha know.

Roxano’s Restaurant had more than a few things to choose from. If I had been with a large crowd, I would have loved to have tried their giant party pizza–18″ x 18″ of the ‘za! How fun is that?

What did we order? Three words: Chicken Alfredo Pizza.

Pizza Heaven in Vevay

As little Indiana, I have had pizza and I have had pizza. This, my dear readers, is pizza with a capital “P.”

Granted, the Garlic Butter Breadsticks are drenched in the delicious garlicky butter sauce and, as we know, butter always makes it better.

But, even so, these are perfection. Soft and warm, the marinara sauce made a great complement. Kid #1 couldn’t get enough! Kid #2 didn’t exactly complain either.

Roxano’s Restaurant Rocks

The pizza was phenomenal. Perfectly topped with red onions, grilled chicken, mushrooms, and heavy on the cheese, this is a pizza I will not soon forget!

You’ll easily find this one in the downtown of this lovely Indiana town–just follow your nose! There’s more than pizza in this mom and pop restaurant. Why not see for yourself?

Moorefield, Indiana: Moorefield Market

Moorefield, Indiana is such a small town. The downtown is made up of just one business–the fantastic Moorefield Market, a general store and restaurant combined that’s owned by Santa himself!

The address says it is in bustling Vevay, Indiana and Moorefield–but this is 8 miles north of Vevay. Just a little Indiana quirk.

This is THE local hangout. Matter of fact, it’s pretty much the only day time local hangout. This is the only business in town.

We sat at the one empty table in the more than a century old building as every head turned to look us over. Non-threatening as we are, they quickly went back to local talk.

The owner, Bill, handed us a menu. Sandwiches galore like a Steak Hoagie with Mozzarella and Pizza Sauce, Pork Tenderloin Sandwich, even Country Fried Steak Sandwich… great choices!

Santa (Bill) noticed we were having trouble deciding and mentioned that they could split our sandwiches up, so we could easily share. Is that nice or what?

We went with the BLT and the Philly Cheesesteak Sandwich.

Bill’s wife, Marla, makes homemade potato chips best served with Ranch dressing (at the owner’s recommendation). Perfection! Piping hot and delicious.

Kid #1 had a burger and Kid #2 had a Grilled Cheese Sandwich. Both were eaten with gusto!

Obviously our sandwiches were good (just look at that image). I couldn’t even pick a favorite.

Santa Gets Involved

Moorefield, Indiana: Inside Moorefield Market

The owners are so incredibly nice. This husband and wife team are also really involved in their community.

In case you somehow missed it, he really IS Santa! Kid #1 informed him that he’s seen him before–in Santa Claus, Indiana or, as he says it, Santa Claus little Indiana.

We told him that even Santa takes a vacation every now and again.

He brought out a few stuffed animals to entertain the boys–and let them keep them, too. See? He’s Santa!

Fundraising for Santa’s Kids

There is usually something going on at Moorefield Market. They host Euchre card games and corn hole on the weekend. There’s also a few big events off and on to raise money for Santa’s Kids.

Santa’s Kids is a way to help give coats, boots, and toys to those kids who really need them. Moorefield Market has managed to raise a lot of money to aid those less fortunate.

A wonderful cause that keeps getting bigger! Go into the new addition and check out the walls for posters of previous years events.

One Stop Shop

What a great atmosphere! If you have never been in a general store and restaurant like Moorefield Market, you are missing out.

Groceries, books, ice cream, candy, Indiana wine–it’s all here. It certainly gives you something to look at while you wait!

Is this Indiana town the smallest thing you’ve ever seen or what? Stop in for the community, for the local flair, and for a way to help support a local business!

The Swiss Wine Festival in Vevay, Indiana has a lot of scheduled events, but Switzerland County had one that little Indiana couldn’t wait to step into:The Media Celebrity Grape Stomp for Charity!

little Indiana was invited to be a part of the Media Celebrity Grape Stomp for Charity in Vevay, Indiana.

While “celebrity” may be a bit elevated for little ol’ me, hubs had two words to say about the whole thing, “Do it!” So? little Indiana did.

I may or may not have squashed a few grapes in the bathtub the night before the big event. Well, I know me, and I didn’t want to think, “Ew! I’m stomping grapes!” the whole time. That would throw me off my game!

Swiss Wine Festival Grape Stomp

Vevay, Indiana: Swiss Wine Festival -- little Indiana is tired!

This Indiana grape stomp was a great time! Just so you know, the result of my effort will not be made into Indiana wine!

We were all grouped together for a total of three rounds. I was placed in the third and final round  with two other women.

How does it work? Everyone has a swabber. This high school FFA member volunteered to stick her hands in the grape mush and work the juice over to the tiny little grating in the lower middle of the barrel.

The cups of juice are added up and whomever has the most amount of cups wins!

Center Stage

I already knew what the audience was thinking–not only did I have being a girl against me, but I was the smallest one there!

But I also had something that many of my competitors didn’t have: A small group of spectators from my very own hometown–four hours away! It was an unexpected coincidence but wonderful.

I admit I hammed it up a bit when it was my turn on the stage. Who wants to cheer on someone who just stands there?

Stomping Grapes

Vevay, Indiana: Swiss Wine Festival Grape Stomp

When the music started and it was time to stomp grapes? I was off like a shot!

“If you’re going to go, go all out” was my personal mantra. No way was I going home empty-handed. I’m a bit competitive. Okay, a lot competitive.

It was cold! About halfway through my feet ached from the cold. I’m hoping that next year? They take the grapes out of the fridge at least the night before. Brrr!

Winning The Grape Stomp

little Indiana ended up in third place with 5 7/8 cups of grape juice! Third! Woot!

That means that $250 bucks goes to the charity of my choice: The Jasper Foundation. Pretty exciting stuff.

little Indiana was also exhausted and ready for a nap! Two minutes of non-stop stomping? Whew! But I didn’t stop there, of course–I had plenty of Indiana town exploring to do.

Just look out, because next year? First place is mine!
