Wolcott House in Wolcott, Indiana

Wolcott, Indiana is a tiny Indiana town.

But, like I’ve always said, every small Indiana town has something! Sometimes the smallest of towns hold the best of surprises!

In Wolcott, The Wolcott House is definitely that special something.

Building began in 1859, though not completed until after the Civil War (during which he briefly served), The Wolcott House is the gloriously preserved residence of the founder of the town, Anson Wolcott.

Mr. Wolcott was once a lawyer, even appearing in front of the Supreme Court of both New York and the US.

But, the allure of Indiana land (and the potential big profits to be had) pulled him. He bought up 2,000 acres, and by 1861, he had plotted out the town of Wolcott and arranged for a railroad station.

Today, you can tour The Wolcott House. There are many interesting items to check out in the rooms, though I find the house itself to be fascinating.

I’ve toured a lot of homes–hey, my own home is 110 years old–but The Wolcott House has a few unusual characteristics. For starters, you can’t miss the curved walls in Anson’s bedroom.

This is a man who loved his fireplaces–there are eight of them!

For another? There’s an observatory on the top level!

Take the narrow staircase up, up, and up and you’ll reach the very top. With room for only the smallest of desks and a chair, it would make the most incredible place to write or read.

It’s remarkable that the grandson of Anson Wolcott left this home to the town.

In an age when many seem to lack the foresight of preservation, Wolcott has had this gem in their personal possession and has been actively restoring the home since 1974.

It’s a lovely Indiana attraction and something you should definitely make it a point to see. When you go, just don’t forget to tell ‘em that little Indiana sent you! As always, please call before you head out!

Wolcott, Indiana really had a great thing going the day of the Sesquicentennial. There were contests, a chicken dinner, and an assortment of booths.

Some of my favorite images of the year so far came from the Wolcott Summer Fest–let’s see if you agree!

Departing from my usual, I’ll be publishing another post featuring the unique tractors at this Indiana festival. I pretty much have the corner on yesterdays tractor. One sign listed that it was one of only 24 tractors made! Is that neat or what? Who knew that this small Indiana town would draw so very many?

Wolcott Summer Fest and Sesquicentennial 2011

Indiana festivals and events? Wolcott, Indiana was certainly big on festivity as they rolled two big events into one! Wolcott celebrated not only their annual Summer Fest but also their Sesquicentennial!

Wolcott Summer Fest and Sesquicentennial

One hundred and fifty years is a long time so you can imagine that a festival like that? Doesn’t happen every day! Wolcott, Indiana kicked things off right with fair rides, games, food, and a tractor show.

But that wasn’t all. Scheduled events like “Longest Beard,” tug of war, Water Ball, and even a soccer tournament rounded out the two day event. Did I mention the live band and dancing in the street set for the evening? Fun stuff.

The Wolcott House, a fantastic residence (once upon a time) that simply exudes Indiana history, was open for tours! Guess what article will be appearing here soon?

It was a hot day in the sun but if you stuck to the shade? Perfection. I had a good time just walking around enjoying the crowd. Much of the entertainment was set on the lawn next to the historic Wolcott House.

Summer Fest Booths

Wolcott Summer Fest 2011: Tractors on Parade

Wolcott’s Summer Fest also took place around parts of a big paved track. Vendors had booths arranged with their wares on a portion of the track.

This sort of set-up was great for stroller pushers and those in wheelchairs, but it was rather a haul to get from the vendors to the food and drink booths. Especially on a day as hot as that was!

There were so many tractors from many different years. I took a whole lot of pics of them! I’ll be sure to get that posted soon as well. I think you may enjoy the variety!

Attended by Honest Abe

Summer Fest and the Sesquicentennial Celebration were a fun way to spend the long Independence Day weekend! Fair food, events, and a tour? How can you lose?

At one point, I noticed that an Abraham Lincoln lookalike was strolling the grounds. I sure wish I had caught up to him for his thoughts on the whole thing. Happy Birthday, Wolcott–here’s to many more!

little Indiana has already mentioned the goodness that is the Wolcott Theater Cafe in super small Wolcott, Indiana. What I haven’t shared are the rest of my yummy, yummy images! Talk about a cozy mom and pop restaurant!

Hubs and I really enjoyed our food — and the atmosphere. It’s one of those places where everyone knows everyone else and, what’s more, they instantly know if you are from out of town! Small towns like Wolcott, Indiana are so fun. I especially loved the cute little coffee cups. Somehow, they just made our coffee taste even better. Wolcott Theater Cafe is a great Indiana town diner. It’s a good choice for taking it easy and enjoying a relaxing meal with plenty of chit-chat throw in!

Timeless Treasures in Wolcott, Indiana is Pretty as a Picture

Timeless Treasures Antiques in Wolcott, Indiana

Step into Timeless Treasures in Wolcott, Indiana and I can just about guarantee that you will be wowed!

This is an Indiana antique, gift, and garden shop that is, to put it simply: Awesome. Lucky for me — hubs and I had ditched the kids and actually got to browse around for a change!

Timeless Treasures Antiques and More

She’s got a knack for decorating. Everything is arranged just so. Timeless Treasures doesn’t just carry great Indiana antiques (although she’s got quite a selection of what she calls “shabby-tiques”), but plenty of new items mixed in there as well.

Antique or not, it looks so gorgeous and lovely you will want to buy it! Helpful hint: don’t take your hubby along so you can. Hubs aside, we both found really neat things that Kid #2 would love to get toddler mitts on.

This is one shop it would probably be best to leave the little ones at home if you want to make it out with everything in one piece!

Inside Timeless Treasures

Kidding aside, Timeless Treasures antiques and then some has a spectacular range of goodies to buy.

From the wine lover to the gardener, to those who like shiny chandeliers and jewelry, you will see something that will strike your fancy or make a great gifts (see, you really don’t need those big box stores)!

This Wolcott, Indiana shop is located in the very small (but tidy) downtown area. I think you’ll be surprised by what you’ll find in this Indiana town antique shop and more.

Absolutely you should go eat breakfast or lunch at the wonderful Wolcott Theater and Cafe and then head over to Timeless Treasures. It will be a day very well spent indeed!

All The World’s A Stage: Wolcott Theater Cafe in Wolcott, Indiana

Hubs and I escaped to the Wolcott Theater Cafe in tiny Wolcott, Indiana. Has it really been a whole two days since I’ve written about food in some way, shape, or form? Impossible!

Wolcott, Indiana is in a different time zone from us so we got to choose between breakfast or lunch! Hubs ordered the Breakfast Scrambler–as you can see from that yummy photo on the left.

I, on the other hand, saw the Buffalo Burger and had to try it! I paired it with cheese fries and prepared to make hubs insanely jealous. Did it work?

If you take a look at the photo below, I think it’s safe to say we were about even! The Wolcott Theater Cafe was simply excellent.

Inside, it’s got that whole small town cuteness thing going on. Occasionally someone would walk in and the owner would comment that she had the fish that so and so liked or checked to see if someone wanted the same side as usual. Don’t you just love that?

The Wolcott Theater Cafe has great food, friendly people, and pretty much oozes small town charm. See for yourself–I don’t think you’ll regret it!

Wolcott, Indiana Architecture: Victorian Extravaganza!

Struggling though the downtown Wolcott area was…there still were quite a few gems scattered around. Check out the neat balcony on that interesting Victorian! Wouldn’t it be wonderful to have the door open in the Summer with a good book in hand! Sounds like heaven to me – especially after all the snow lately! Ugh.

Wolcott, Indiana: Fading Beauty

Wolcott, Indiana is very small. According to the Wiki, Wolcott had a town population of under 1000 at the 2000 census. So, when I say it is very small, you know I am in no way exaggerating.

As you can see from my photos, Wolcott has (or once had) a really amazing downtown. I mean, look at all that detail and unusual touches! The downtown still possesses a few rather sharp buildings that I’d love to poke around in!

You already saw my post about Why I Do What I Do based on a sign I found taped to the window of a Wolcott, Indiana restaurant. Even so: Wolcott still has a few fun things to offer and shouldn’t be overlooked!

There was a “coming soon” sign at a building that foretold of pizza and soft drinks. That’s always a happy sight to see! There’s always room for pizza, right?

The business owner of Timeless Treasures was in process of relocating to a larger building across the street. It was such a cold, cold day so the move? Probably not so fun but wow does her shop look amazing! Stay tuned for more about that.

There was also the Wolcott Theater Cafe. I sure wish I had been able to get inside there! It’s on the list for next time! Looks like it must be THE local hangout.

As you can see, there was also this amazing Wolcott House on the way in to town. Yes, it really was that phenomenal. I would love to learn the history on this one!

Why I Do What I Do

I don’t know how long John and Darlene were in business. I don’t know how long they have been closed. I don’t even know who they are. All I know is that when I bummed around Wolcott looking for somewhere to eat, I happened upon this depressing sign scotch-taped to the window.

This is why I do what I do. People are finding and reading little Indiana (amazingly enough) – hopefully they are also VISITING little Indiana (or their equivalent) so things like this can stop happening. You think the recession is hard in the big cities? You don’t even know how bad it is in a small town.

Personally, I know there are many people in my area who have lost their job. Businesses keep closing all over little Indiana and it is heart-breaking. But, it isn’t all bad. We are all pulling a little closer together as a community, spending more time together instead of at the mall.

The next time you are toodling down I-65 or just passing through and are hungry – well, isn’t it about time you stopped hitting places with golden arches and fast food windows and instead discover the little places around your area?
