Nappanee, Indiana is such a great Indiana town you will want to make sure you are close to the adorable downtown area. The Homespun Country Inn Bed and Breakfast is a great lodging option!

The Homespun Country Inn Bed and Breakfast couldn’t be in a better location. It’s so close to town, which is so walkable, you don’t need a car at all! With gas prices these days, that’s definitely a nice little bonus.

My favorite part of any Indiana bed and breakfast is figuring out the best place to relax. Here? The front porch is it! Notice the fireplace in the image below–that would be the one I talked about in an earlier post. Cute!

Nappanee, Indiana is such a fun, walkable Indiana town. The Homespun Country Inn B&B puts you right near the heart of downtown!

I loved the easy access afforded by this cute Indiana bed and breakfast. It let us get from Point A to Point B without having to hop in and out of the car.

We were able to zip around the quaint downtown shops and enjoy ourselves without having to worry about parking the car and navigating one-way streets or Amish buggies!

Our room was cozy and cute. Decorated in vintage style, it was frilly and kind of fun.

There was actually a photo in our room of the original occupant: Wilma, who was married in 1921 in front of the fireplace downstairs. Is that a neat touch or what?

But my favorite spot in the house wasn’t actually in–it was the fantastic front porch! I love a good front porch. Sitting on a front porch swing, watching the neighborhood and people go by, well, it’s something I really enjoy.

I enjoyed just hanging out on the front porch with the hubby, watching the world go by. Before we got back to work, visiting the mom and pop shops, of course!

As always, my favorite part of a bed and breakfast stay is the breakfast!

I stayed up too late going through photos taken of Nappanee the day before, making plans as to what I wanted to revisit as well as new places to go before we had to leave.

So waking up to coffee, fruit salad, and Sausage-Stuffed French Toast really put me on the right track!

From Shuffleboard to tennis courts and walking trails, there was enough located on the Leavenworth Inn property to keep us–and the kids–entertained! On a beautiful Summer day, what could be more fun than a rousing game of Shuffleboard? It’s one of our favorite things to do as a family, as funny as that sounds.

Who doesn’t love the thought of an overnight stay at the Kintner House Inn in Corydon, Indiana? The outside looks fantastic–and certainly got our attention!

This is quite the Indiana bed and breakfast! With the motto, “The Hideaway for Romantics” we were worried we wouldn’t be able to stay–we had our boys with us.

Luckily, they accept children so we shared a spacious room. We were put in the Squire Boone Room located at the top of the handsome staircase.

Even luckier? The doors to the unoccupied rooms were open so I was able to poke my head in and look. Very nice! Well, I didn’t see inside all of the rooms–there are 15 guest rooms at this large B&B!

Spacious is one word to describe it. With a fireplace, two canopy full-sized beds, and various antiques (including a giant armoire), you could also call it really cozy. Our kids loved the beds–well, they loved to play under them!

Those antique beds can really sit high up. To kids? That means there is plenty of room under them. It kept them entertained in the brief moments we were in the room and not sleeping so it worked out just fine.

I think it would be lovely to stay in the winter and have the fireplace going! With the furnishings and the canopied bed…it just screams “Relax!”

The location of the Kintner House Inn couldn’t be better–it’s on a corner lot in this bustling Indiana town. So convenient for popping out and grabbing coffee at one of the couple of shops in town!

For those of you that haven’t been in old homes before, well, they just don’t make them like they used to.

You would think it would be noisy being so close to the street but…you can’t hear it. At all.

I found it all rather inspiring so hubs dug out the small table in our room and set it up next to the window (and the plug-in).

When I got up at the crack of dawn, I was able to little Indiana it up right then and there. I do love a change of location.

The Making of an Indiana Bed and Breakfast

Here’s the part of the post where I arouse your interest in Indiana history. Because Kintner House Inn? Well, it’s certainly got it!

After the Battle of Corydon on July 9, 1863, General Morgan made Kintner House Inn his headquarters! He learned of the defeat at Gettysburg from the innkeepers daughter, Sallie (very much a Northern supporter!).

Though the original Inn was lost to fire in 1871: You know Hoosiers. Ever persistent, Jacob Kintner, the owner, made plans to rebuild.

When the doors opened to the public in 1873, it was to a larger, grander inn in a new location–the same one it is today!

Kintner House Inn was thought to be the leading hotel in Harrison County until Jacob passed away in 1880. His daughter, Sallie, took over operations but after her death in 1922, it fell into various hands and purposes. This once well-known hotel became a beauty shop, a doctor’s office, a watchmaker’s office, and even, at one point, a utility office.

It fell into terrible disrepair, so when a group of men purchased the Inn in 1986, they completely refurbished the entire home–inside and out! It was added to the National Register of Historic Places.

After lots of fixing and decorating, more than sixty years since the Inn had stopped being an Inn, it opened its doors to guests once again.

No matter what room you are in at the Kintner House Inn, you are sure to find yourself surrounded by antiques. Breakfast at this bed and breakfast? Was heavenly.

With the kids along, the innkeeper kindly served bacon and eggs. Of course, there was also fruit, various breads, and even warm biscuits to nibble on, but it’s what we ate off of that was really fun!

Our coffee? Was served in teacups. Delicate, fragile floral teacups. The kind of things that do not see the light of day in our home–at least until our two boys are older.

One of the teacups was just like the one my grandmother had sitting in her china cabinet many years ago. She let me choose one as a “thank you” for helping with my ailing grandfather. The teacup? It’s the one with purple violets on it.

Charming and Comfy

When you stay in a place like this, well, you just can’t wait to return! We had a lovely stay and greatly enjoyed our time at Kintner House Inn!

Leavenworth Inn in Leavenworth, Indiana: Setting up for a Wedding

The Leavenworth Inn bed and breakfast in Leavenworth, Indiana sits atop a large hill above the most amazing scenic overlook. Who knew that Indiana had such a thing?

The Leavenworth Inn

If it weren’t for the sign, it would be easy to miss this Indiana bed and breakfast. At least, we were so busy gawking at the large drop-off at the side of the road we might have missed it!

This is an amazing location for a bed and breakfast. Built in the 1800′s, in the early 1900′s it was advertised as Forest Grove Farm, “The Place to Spend Your Vacation.”

Guests could expect Spring chickens, fine air, and milk from Jersey cows. Once upon a time there were even grape vineyards.

Today? While it is no longer a farm, you can still expect the “fine air.” A remnant from its past, the old wine cellar still remains in the basement. Ready for a little Indiana history? What was once a town of 2,000 (until a horrible flood in 1937) is now a town of 200. It’s the perfect place to relax and unwind.

Four buildings with sixteen rooms make up Leavenworth Inn–on six acres of land! There’s all sorts of stuff to do here–or not. I can’t wait to tell you all about it!

Our Room at The Leavenworth Inn

Peaceful and homey. Those are two words I would use to describe the Magnolia Suite.

Don’t think that by “homey” I mean small or outdated, either. We had an adjoining suite to share with the kiddos–two queen beds and one shared bathroom. Nicely decorated all around.

It is comfortable and relaxing. It’s also exactly what we needed after two very full days of exploring Indiana towns.

A small table and pair of chairs sit near a window, perfect for me to get some little Indiana work done! We also had an exterior door that leads right outside.

Kid #1 and I woke up early to take advantage of a few fun amenities here at The Leavenworth Inn–more on that later! Having easy access to the outdoors was great!

After rounding up the kids, we only had to walk out of our room and through the family room to get to where our family was seated for breakfast. We were just off the dining room.

While I admit we were slightly disappointed (it is the fun part of staying in a B&B, talking with strangers!) it worked out okay. The kids got to just talk (or babble) to us while we planned out the rest of our day, which included Marengo Cave!

Early in the morning, our new friend pulled up to the Victorian Guest House Bed and Breakfast to pick us up for a personal tour of the Old Order Amish homes and businesses in Nappanee, Indiana.

Nappanee, Indiana: Amish School

In Nappanee, Indiana and beyond, each Amish settlement is broken up into districts. The bishop in each district decides on the rules for the Amish people that live there.

For instance, the Amish in Nappanee, Indiana would have different rules to follow than the Amish communities in Ohio or Pennsylvania–even differing from the town right next door.

All Old Order Amish do have a few things in common: No cars, no posing for photos after you have been baptized, and no ornamentation or buttons.

Interestingly enough, the Bishop isn’t voted in. When a new Bishop is needed, after the death of the previous Bishop, eight Amish men will each choose one Bible. Whomever takes the one with a slip of paper inside of it is the new Bishop…for life!

Old Order Amish Schools

As you can see from the photo, the Amish here have their own schools. Much like their homes, Amish schools don’t even possess shutters, which is considered “too fancy.” You can see they do have playground equipment like swings, teeter-totters, and slides. I was kind of surprised by that.

The schools are usually run by two teachers. Amish students attend up to 8th grade but when they turn 16 their education is considered complete. Even if they want to, they are not allowed to continue on in their education. Old Order Amish do not believe in higher education.

Plain and Fancy

Once upon a time, the Old Order Amish in Nappanee weren’t allowed to have rugs, pictures, or even curtains. But judging from the whisper of fabric peeking out of many windows, the current Bishop has allowed curtains. He will decide what color curtains are allowed.

Our guide let us in on the fact that the Bishop here had also allowed photos of the kids. While grandparents don’t have entire walls covered in them, they do have one or two images of their grandchildren.

Even Amish cemeteries stick to the “less is best” ideal. Located every few miles, no one headstone stands out over the rest. Names and dates are the only things on the tombstone. No flowers, wreaths, or anything of that sort. It is uniform and very, very tidy.

Old Order Amish and Church

Every other weekend, one Amish family will have church and furnish lunch for the members of the district (here, in Nappanee, there are 33 Amish families).

They sing a cappella, conduct the service in High German, and after the three hour service–they share lunch. No work is done on Sunday except for feeding the animals. All meal preparation for the Sunday church service is done the day before.

At the end of the lunch, whomever is going to host church the next time will take the white supply wagon back with them.

Amish Farms

All the farmers have giant workhorses. These massive animals have shaggy patches near their hooves and are quite tall. They work in groups of eight, making two trips up and down the field. Then that team will rest while the farmer switches them out for a fresh team.

You can imagine how long it would take to get a field completed without using a tractor!

Phone Home?

When you toodle around Elkhart County, you may notice little buildings at the bottom of every driveway. These are actually phone booths! No, they aren’t for chatty Amish teens–the phone inside is used only in case of an emergency.

Bad things can happen to anyone and the Amish do take advantage of a few modern conveniences when it comes to protecting their own.

Amish Horse and Buggy

The Amish in this small Indiana town ride bikes everywhere–unless they are heading into town, in which case they hook up the horse and buggy.

Apparently, (so says my source) these Amish treat their buggy like many non-Amish men, or “English” as they call it, like to treat their cars: With pride! The insides might have plush velvet and are very comfortable (not to mention expensive).

It can be quite a culture shock the first time you see someone so plainly dressed. But even the Nappanee, Indiana Amish like to hit yard sales on Thursdays and Fridays, eat out at the local pizza joint, get groceries, and use the Laundromat! Sounds a lot like you and me, don’t you think?

Nappanee, Indiana: Aged to Perfection

Nappanee, Indiana is an amazing small town. Charming and well-kept, it’s small town living at its best!

Arriving into town after dark, this small Indiana town was all aglow. I fell in love! Bricked streets, a brightly lit downtown, and many old, wonderful buildings…just fantastic.

We enjoyed walking around downtown and peeking in all the shop windows. All the stores were long since closed for the night. What a fun selection!

Small Town Trust

We met a very nice woman in town who volunteered to take us around Nappanee in the morning and give us an up close and personal tour of the Old Order Amish area.

Only in a small town would someone offer to cart around a couple of strangers and not think twice about it. How amazing is that?

The next morning she picked us up from The Victorian Guest House.We saw so much!

There’s more to the Indiana Amish than horse and buggy. We toured an Amish General Store full of bulk foods, bakery items, and cheese, as well as Amish schools and homes.

We learned so much about the Amish in the area from someone who actually knows the families! It was a real eye-opener. I can’t wait to tell you all about it!

Almost Famous

Nappanee actually has a few claims to fame for such a small town. For starters, as you may have figured out already, Nappanee has a large Old Order Amish population. It’s the biggest in Indiana, don’t'cha know.

It’s also the largest producer of RV’s (that’s Recreation Vehicles for all you city folk) and kitchen cabinets. little Indiana could so use one of those!

Location, Location, Location

With such great little shops in downtown Nappanee and the Amish businesses dotting the area it makes a great place to play. We can’t wait until we have the chance to return!

Rules of The House: Your Guide to a Bed and Breakfast Stay

If you have never stayed in a bed and breakfast you are missing out! Hotels are so over-rated. Before you go, read these tips to ensure that everyone has a lovely time– and know what to expect!

1. Get Comfortable But Not TOO Comfortable. Remember, this is somebody else’s home. Get relaxed, get cozy, just keep your feet off the antique coffee table and try to resist jumping on the puffy beds.

2. The Honor System. Some places charge for things like soft drinks and forgotten toiletry items like disposable razors or toothpaste (I don’t think I have ever remembered everything I have needed!). If there is a plate set out for that, pay up.

3. R-E-S-P-E-C-T. Not only are there possibly other guests, but there could be other people in whatever rooms surround yours, so don‘t turn up the radio to full blast and try not to stomp around. Treat everyone and everything with respect and you can expect the same in return.

4. Take It Outside! Smoke? Just don’t do it inside. Amazing antiques and fragile laces just don’t mix well with cigarette smoke.

5. The Art of Conversation. The great thing about bed and breakfasts is that you have the chance to connect with other guests. Don’t force your opinion on others and try not to tick everyone off. Remember, everyone is there for one thing: relaxation!

6. Must Love Dogs. Not every bed and breakfast is going to embrace the thought of having dogs or cats in their rooms. Find out the pet policy for the place you are thinking of staying in so you can make other plans for Fido or Fluffy if need be. Ask the innkeeper. They may have an idea of a nice kennel in the area where your pooch will be safe and happy.

7. Alcohol. Bed and breakfasts have their own policies about alcoholic beverages, so make sure to know the rules of the house. Many, however, do offer sparkling juices as a fun replacement…for a price.

8. How about that flaky pastry! Bed and breakfasts are famous for putting out their own cookbooks. Pick up a copy and recreate a meal to remember at home! Otherwise it doesn’t hurt to ask if they wouldn’t mind sharing the recipe for your own private use.

9. The Real Deal. Many bed and breakfasts have special themed packages which can range from romantic weekend packages with sparkling cider and flowers to special deals at area attractions that all serve to make your stay more than memorable! Don’t be afraid to ask about current specials.

There you have it. Nine whole tips to keep in mind when venturing into the comfortable world of the B & B! Enjoy your stay!

Indiana Bed and Breakfast: The Victorian Guest House

From the instant I saw The Victorian Guest House in Nappanee, Indiana, I was giddy with excitement. I couldn’t wait to get inside and see it!

Gabled and turreted, we somehow managed to drive right by this very large Indiana bed and breakfast. Oops. My navigating skills may leave something to be desired.

Anyway, from the outside, The Victorian Guest House was absolutely beautiful…and pink. Very, very pink.

Our Room at The Victorian Guest House

Lovely etched glass doors led into an entryway with fantastically gorgeous woodwork along an impressive staircase. Our room was at the top of the stairs: The Coppes Suite.

Why did we choose to stay in this room? I think the picture above easily explains it.

The tub was that huge. Original to the house and in excellent condition, it is capable of holding 65 gallons of water with plenty of room for two. I totally felt like a Princess.

Exploring the Inn

We made our way downstairs to check out what was offered in the dining room. What a room that was!

There was a massive amount of woodwork here as well as an incredible carved table and chairs. My photos just do NOT do it justice.

I picked through numerous teas while hubs ponied up for a cold pop (or soda as he says) from the mini-fridge.

Breakfast the next morning started with a pear comfit, an egg casserole that I’m pretty sure I have made myself at home, and a generous slice of Milk Chocolate Bundt Cake.

The Victorian Guest House is in a terrific location. Right in the quaint Indiana town of Nappanee, hubs and I could easily ditch the car, walk around, and make our way back without getting lost and confused about how to get back.

It is a wonderful home and definitely worth checking out. They just don’t make them like they used to!
