<p>History is just fascinating. Except for my dad, it wasn&#8217;t until college that I ever met anyone else who knew so much and made it interesting (thanks Prof. Guthrie). Discover more of the interesting side of history at the Jasper County Historical Society and Museum in <a href="http://littleindiana.com/category/littletowns/rennselaer/" target="_blank">Rensselaer, Indiana</a>!</p>
<p>This past month they just finished up with an exhibit on the Civil War (featuring a special piece from the Indiana Historical Society). Up next? Quilts!</p>
<p>Rensselaer, Indiana, like many small towns, has an interesting history to be sure. If you didn&#8217;t know that, try poking around the &#8220;Indiana&#8221; section in your local library sometime and see what you can find.</p>
<p>There&#8217;s a lot of great and wonderful Hoosiers out there, you know, like Abraham Lincoln who spent his childhood in beautiful Spencer County, Indiana.</p>
<p>General Robert Milroy may have had a <em>bit</em> of bad luck during the war but he and his wife took in a family of freed slaves and taught them to read (yes, I learned that fact at the museum).</p>
<div id="attachment_4445" class="wp-caption alignright" style="width: 310px; border: 1px solid #dddddd; background-color: #f3f3f3; padding-top: 4px; margin: 10px; text-align:center; float: right;"><a href="http://littleindiana.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/JCHS29.jpg" rel='prettyPhoto[gallery1]'><img class="size-full wp-image-4445" title="Jasper County Historical Society Museum in Rensselaer, Indiana" src="http://littleindiana.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/JCHS29.jpg" alt="Jasper County Historical Society Museum in Rensselaer, Indiana" width="300" height="200" /></a><p style=' padding: 0 4px 5px; margin: 0;' class="wp-caption-text">Jasper County Historical Society and Museum in Rensselaer, Indiana</p></div>
<p>There&#8217;s more where that came from and maybe someday I&#8217;ll write that post. I do love me some Indiana history! But for now, you can get your Indiana history fix at <em>your</em> local Indiana history museums like the Jasper County Historical Society and Museum.</p>
<p>You can also check out <a href="http://RensselaerAdventures.blogspot.com" target="_blank">Rensselaer Adventures</a> because it sounds like he&#8217;s about to post his <em>own</em> article about the Jasper County Historical Society and Museum. Apparently I just missed him when I visited the museum. I came in, camera at the ready, gleam in my eye, not long after he left!</p>
<p>There are tons of great places pertaining to Indiana history in small towns. Check out <a href="http://littleindiana.com/2010/04/delphi-more-than-a-day-trip/" target="_blank">Delphi</a>, or <a href="http://littleindiana.com/category/littletowns/wabash/" target="_blank">Wabash</a>, <a href="http://littleindiana.com/2010/11/dana-indiana-ernie-pyle/" target="_blank">Ernie Pyle in Dana</a>, and even <a href="http://littleindiana.com/category/littletowns/medaryville/" target="_blank">Medaryville</a> (which I haven&#8217;t gotten into but looked fabulous).  There&#8217;s plenty more where that came from but I think you get the idea! Feel free to mention the small town museum in your neck of the woods in the comments below so everyone can know where to get their Indiana history fix!</p>
<p>More <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/jessica_nunemaker/sets/72157622646241896/with/5465226980/">Jasper County Historical Society Museum images</a> coming up so stay tuned. Talk about great stuff! It&#8217;s fun to see what <em>any</em> Indiana town used to look like back in the &#8220;good old days.&#8221; It really makes you appreciate the conveniences of modern society, that is for sure!</p>

<p><a title="Wolcott, Indiana" href="http://littleindiana.com/category/littletowns/wolcott-littletowns/" target="_blank">Wolcott, Indiana</a> is<em> very</em> small.  According to the Wiki, Wolcott had a town population of under 1000 at the 2000 census.  So, when I say it is very small, you know I am in no way exaggerating.</p>
<h3><strong>Wolcott, Indiana</strong></h3>
<p>As you can see from my photos, Wolcott has (or once had) a really amazing downtown.  I mean, look at all that detail and unusual touches! The downtown still possesses a few rather sharp buildings that I&#8217;d love to poke around in!</p>
<p>You already saw my post about <a href="http://littleindiana.com/2010/02/why-i-do-what-i-do/" target="_blank">Why I Do What I Do</a> based on a sign I found taped to the window of a Wolcott, Indiana restaurant. Even so: Wolcott still has a few fun things to offer and shouldn&#8217;t be overlooked!</p>
<p>There was a “coming soon” sign at a building that foretold of pizza and soft drinks. That&#8217;s always a happy sight to see! There&#8217;s always room for pizza, right?</p>
<p>The business owner of <a title="Timeless Treasures" href="http://littleindiana.com/2011/04/timeless-treasures-wolcott-indiana/" target="_blank">Timeless Treasures</a> was in process of relocating to a larger building across the street. It was such a cold, cold day so the move? Probably not so fun but wow does her shop look amazing!  Stay tuned for more about that.</p>
<div class="wp-caption alignright" style="width: 310px; border: 1px solid #dddddd; background-color: #f3f3f3; padding-top: 4px; margin: 10px; text-align:center; float: right;"><a href="http://littleindiana.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/02/WolcottAWESOMEHouse.jpg" rel='prettyPhoto[gallery1]'><img class=" " style="display: inline; margin-left: 8px; margin-right: 0px; border: 0pt none;" title="Wolcott House in Wolcott, Indiana" src="http://littleindiana.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/02/WolcottAWESOMEHouse_thumb.jpg" border="0" alt="Wolcott House in Wolcott, Indiana" width="300" height="200" align="right" /></a><p style=' padding: 0 4px 5px; margin: 0;' class="wp-caption-text">Wolcott House in Wolcott, Indiana</p></div>
<p>There was also the <a title="Wolcott Theater Cafe" href="http://littleindiana.com/2011/03/wolcott-theater-cafe-indiana/" target="_blank">Wolcott Theater Cafe</a>. I sure wish I had been able to get inside there! It&#8217;s on the list for next time! Looks like it must be THE local hangout.</p>
<h4><strong>The Wolcott House</strong></h4>
<p>As you can see, there was also this amazing Wolcott House on the way in to town. Yes, it really was that phenomenal. I would love to learn the history on this one!</p>
<p>Of course, I have way more photos of Wolcott than I can fit here so be sure to check out my Flickr page for more Wolcott images and other <a title="Pictures in Indiana" href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/jessica_nunemaker/sets/72157623217899079/" target="_blank">pictures in Indiana</a>.</p>
