Whiting, Indiana: Lykos European Food Market and Shop by Packaging

You already know that Whiting, Indiana has all sorts of unexpected goodness in its super tidy downtown but I’ve yet to inform you about a fun little shop: Lykos European Food Market!

The smell of bread will hit your nose as soon as you walk in. Right in the front of the European deli is a wire rack of awesome bread. Buy it. But before you do, be sure to go drool at the meats and bacon! in the cases, too.

There are a few aisles of imported foods inside Lykos European Food Market ranging from spices to cookies to wines. Really, that’s a total guess. All the packaging is in foreign language(s) so hubs and I were shopping by pictures! Fun!

We picked up a bottle of wine, mineral water bottled in the Serbian mountains of Arandjelovac, and fresh bread. Weird purchases, but that’s somehow what ended up in our hands by the end.

I’m wishing I had picked up a package of chocolate covered-children but I guess I can do that next time. At least, that’s what I translated and inferred from the cover design on the image to the right!

By the way — the bread was awesome. You could taste the freshly-made goodness (and a hint of egg). Delicious!

Let me say this about the bottle of mineral water: it’s total love/hate. Is there anything else that I’ve had, thought was gross, but then got a craving shortly after to try again? Strange and bizarre but there ya go.

When you make the trip over to Whiting, Indiana (and you certainly should! It’s definitely one of the best Indiana small towns) make sure you head over to Lykos European Food Market. It is not your usual small town shop!

Do small town stores dream of making it big? Kroger big? Look, I recognize that sometimes, just sometimes, it isn’t possible to find everything you need in small town, USA. If I decide to go all Martha Stewart on you or need a bigger size of something, then, yes, I may have a little trouble. Sometimes, you’ve got to branch out.

It all began with one store: Barney Kroger used his life savings back in 1883 – all $372 of it! to purchase his first grocery store. His motto? “Be particular. Never sell anything you would not want yourself.”

Interesting, don’t you think? Not so very different from a motto that small town (or not so small town) stores have to shoot for today. We all strive for variations of the same big American dream – and Hoosier or not, Barney Kroger just managed to go bigger than most – like 2,500 stores big!

It kind of gives all of us a little hope, don’t you think? Do what you do – and do it well. You just never know what could happen. We all have to start somewhere…even in little Indiana.
