I love things that have a history–even my wedding band has the initials and year of a couple from 1930 on it. Steffens Jewelry has a phenomenal selection (i.e. things I’d love to wear!) of estate jewelry in all sizes, shapes, and colors.

As a registered watchmaker, jewelry, and diamond-setter, Roger is able to do repairs in-store.

Roger and his wife, Vicki purchased the family business back in 1986. You could say they know their stuff!

For 55 years Steffens Jewelry has been Rensselaer’s hometown jeweler.

Why did you start Historic Indianapolis?
I started HI as a way to share all of the awesome (and mostly forgotten) bits and pieces of the city’s past. I had been an editor on my neighborhood newsletter and then became the neighborhood historian, but I learned about much more than just my neighborhood and wanted to share my finds.

I started an Historic Indianapolis Blogspot account in July 2009, but went to a full 7-days a week website in February 2010, and continue to do so.

What about that name? Why Historic Indianapolis?
I couldn’t think of a better or more succinct name to represent history or historic stuff + Indianapolis

What are three of your most favorite posts?

• The story about the castle that used to stand at 13th & Delaware (my obsession mansion), designed by the father of the modern skyscraper, William LeBaron Jenney and the inspiration home for Booth Tarkington’s The Magnificent Ambersons: Preservation Denied and Died: 1305 North Delaware Street

• From my weekly (on Mondays) feature called “Ladies Lounge” I picked some of the worst dresses from the Golden Globes and suggested dresses they should have worn. I’m a vintage lover (surprise, surprise) and find little merit to the majority of clothing design today: Ladies Lounge: 2012 Golden Globes, Reimagined Worst to Best

• Bi-weekly contributor, Libby Cierzniak wrote this, but I love this (and the rest of her posts, btw) because it represents the kind of items I’m always scouring flea markets and shops for: Indianapolis Collected: Tourist Souvenirs

• I know you said just 3, but I can’t leave out one of Joan Hostetler’s “Then & Now” weekly contributions. This is one of many examples of the amazing architecture that Indianapolis didn’t preserve—all the more heartbreaking when you see the replacement: Then and Now: Clifford Place and Norways Sanatorium

What keeps you ready and raring to post? Why do you blog?
At first, it was just wanting to share the spoils of my hunt; now with almost well over 15,000 views each month (and growing) I also feel an obligation to keep the audience coming back for more.

I love that every day has something different and that I still have so many more ideas to roll out! I also am very motivated by making a difference—I want to incite as much passion for history and heritage amongst others as I feel. It’s a tall order I know, but if I don’t get there, I’ll die trying!

Have you always been interested in history? What was the first building that made you feel like you HAD to know more?
I hated history in high school, but my mom started reading Greek mythology to me at a young age, so no and yes. The turning point for me was as a teenager, getting to stay at the Hotel del Coronado on Coronado Island (San Diego) in California—that’s my native state. It was love at first sight/ site.

In Indianapolis, I’m far more obsessed with the ones we’ve lost. Because we have lost the vast majority of the best of the city’s architecture.

Do you have a favorite site? Some building or location that blew you away with its history?
West Baden Springs Hotel—there aren’t even words. Just go. I don’t care if you have traveled the globe, you can still appreciate the jaw-dropping, utterly inspiring restoration job there. I will forever love Indiana Landmarks and the Cook family for this gift to Indiana and Hoosiers!

You are cruising around in search of the next hidden Hoosier treasure–what song is blasting away on the radio?
I have almost 20,000 songs in my iPod, which is usually what I’m listening to, so that’s almost unanswerable. Recently, I’ve been on a Julian Velard kick (and with any luck, I’ll get him to come play Indianapolis again in March—he’s usually headlining places in NY, London and Netherlands, but he played The Irving in summer 2011). Aside from that it’s from Aaliyah to Frank Zappa. Though my all-time faves are Jellyfish, Annie Lennox and Eric Clapton.

Is there anything else that you would like little Indiana readers to know?
Get to know your family tree—it will really enrich the way you see the world.

Learn the stories of the world around you.

New doesn’t innately have value and the epidemic of disposability that seems so pervasive in our country needs to do an about-face!

Once a building is gone, it’s gone forever. When it goes, that’s your heritage that is getting decimated. Exhaust all options before destruction. Some of the smaller towns in Indianapolis have done a far better job than Indianapolis as far as preserving their heritage. Of course, others have done just as bad, but I love stumbling into small Indiana towns that still have their old courthouse and shops around the square!

Wabash, Indiana: Jack in the Box Childrens Consignment

With more than 1000 consigners and over 100,000 items, there’s nothing else like it in this Indiana town–or beyond!

Step inside this giant building and prepare to be amazed! Seriously–it’s huge and full of things your kids will actually want.

Kid #1 zipped around willy-nilly. You could say he was more than a little impressed!

The wall of Melissa and Doug caught my eye right away–as did a particular toy set I’ve been looking for and managed to snag at Jack in the Box for $15 less than I’d seen anywhere. Sold!

There was an entire section of new clothing, shoes, and accessories for girls and boys. I saw brands like Little Me, Melissa and Doug, and Osh Kosh.

I also saw plenty of cute things for boys–which is so hard to find.

But what really sets Jack in the Box apart from the crowd is the absolutely fantastic selection of gently used items. There is a whole room of baby stuff alone: strollers, cribs, bouncers, even walkers and mobiles.

Why buy new when you can have something that looks new for so much less?

You already know that I’ve been everywhere, man, I’ve been everywhere– and I’ve never seen anything like Jack in the Box.

Wabash County folks are beyond lucky that they have such a great, inexpensive retail option to turn to when it comes to clothing and entertaining the kids!

Veni's Sweet Shop: Nappanee, Indiana

Yes, Veni’s Sweet Shop is as good as it sounds.

Nice and bright, this shop is so welcoming. Rows and rows of chocolates in all shapes, sizes, and flavors beg to be bought and eaten behind the shining glass.

I would be lying if I said I came out of Veni’s Sweet Shop empty-handed!

But it’s research, right? I mean, I don’t really even have a choice in the matter. I owe it to all of you to tell it like it is.

After an agonizingly difficult decision, I ended up with Orange Creme, Vanilla Creme, and Mint Creme. My favorite flavors right here in little Indiana! Awesome.

Smooth and delicious–there’s no additives, wax, or preservatives in these chocolatey bites of Heaven. You can definitely taste the difference. Fresh and fantastic.

At this Indiana candy store, the Orange Creme was my favorite!

Personally, I would love to do more research on Veni’s Sweet Shop. Seriously. Name the day!

More Than a Chocolate Shop

This Elkhart County shop isn’t only for those who need a Chocolate fix (though it certainly does the trick!).

There’s a selection of nuts, candy, and even drinks–like an ice cream float or Hot Chocolate.

But more than that? I see Veni’s Sweet Shop as one more reason to bypass the big box shops and to support local business. Oh, how sweet it is!

Go There

A sweet shop is just what Nappanee needed! I can’t think of a better fit for this bustling Indiana town.

Winter or Summer, you’ll plenty to do to keep you busy in this fun Indiana town.

As we drove up the very big hill to get to the hotel and waterpark, the kids were amazed.

Encased in glass windows, there’s no hiding the colorful slides darting around inside–and out!

Kid #1 couldn’t believe his great good luck. “Mom, are we staying HERE?”

Who knew our room at Big Splash Indoor Waterpark would be so comfortable?

I was expecting more “kid-friendly” and less decorative type things. Boy was I wrong.

Extra-long decorative pillows, a comfortable mattress, and nice, neutral colors lent a relaxing feel to the room. The kids really liked playing with the giant  pillows!

What’s great is that even after you check out, you are still allowed access to the indoor waterpark. How fun is that?

Big Splash Adventure Indoor Waterpark in French Lick, Indiana

The lazy river was calling my name. Kid #1 liked to go through it with me.

I liked to bop his inner tube over and under as many buckets, fountains, and other “get you drenched” sort of surprises.

Now that was fun! Kid #2 loved the toddler pool and slide! He felt like such big stuff.

Kid #1 and hubby were brave enough to tackle the slides first thing. They couldn’t wait to tell me how creepy the red slide was at night–so dark you can’t see anything but can feel the temperature change as it darts outside the building!

I wasn’t brave enough to battle the stairs (you know my fear of heights, right?) until the next morning. But then? Wow did I have fun!

Go There

People travel all over the country looking for something to do when there’s great good fun to be had in their very own backyard.

Get over to Orange County and make a splash–any time of year!

When you need a comfy, cozy place to stay, you should certainly consider The Old MG Bed and Breakfast in Brownsburg, Indiana.

The Old MG Bed and Breakfast was the perfect place to hole up for the night. The kids found blocks to keep them busy and hubs and I poked through books and games, too!

But one of the best parts of any Indiana bed and breakfast stay is the breakfast! Gingerbread Muffins, French Toast, fruit–and bacon! Isn’t everything better with bacon?

Bill’s Rock Shop in Delphi, Indiana is an awesome little shop. There are rocks and fossils everywhere!

I admit that I would use any excuse to visit Delphi, Indiana! But–Bill’s Rock Shop holds its own as a great downtown destination.

This would make such a great place to take the kids or grand-kids and give them a little lesson on rocks or fossils. Educational and fun!

I’ve heard tell that it’s seasonally opened, so please be sure to call ahead before you head out.

Serving up tasty and delicious homemade food that’s made to order, this Indiana mom and pop restaurant was a wonderful surprise!

I admit that I was apprehensive at first when I walked into the really nice, brightly lit interior–would this place serve homemade food?

Absolutely it does! Flipping through the Netters menu, there’s a lot to like.

I could not decide between the Patty Melt or the Reuben Sandwich (surprise, surprise). Apparently I am very much a creature of habit!

Hubs ordered Fried Mushrooms and a Philly Cheesesteak Sandwich. He does love a good Philly!

I finally narrowed it down to the Patty Melt–and a side of fries. But next time…that Reuben Sandwich is getting crossed off the list.

If I can keep myself from getting that yummy Patty Melt again, that is!

After receiving our order, well, let’s just say that Netters Restaurant ranks up there as one of my all-time faves. From start to finish, it was delicious.

A Family Affair

When I told hubs that my fries were amazing, the owner mentioned that up until I ordered them they were still a potato! Now how is that for fresh?

Hubs boasted that his Fried Mushrooms were the best he had ever had! Days later and he’s still going on about the greatness of those mushrooms!

In fact, the owner mentioned that everything they make is made to order and always fresh. It shows! There’s a lot of care taken in the preparation of each and every dish.

The owners have six kids–one of which was helping that very night. Support a family restaurant and you support a family!

You absolutely need to check it out. There’s even a bonus: Free Wi-Fi! Now how’s that for a great Indiana town hangout?

Tuna Casserole Recipe

While this Tuna Casserole recipe isn’t the prettiest final product ever–comfort food never is–rest assured that it is delicious!

I think the addition of mayonnaise is what makes this so good. In our home, no one is upset when this one is served. Kid #2 often proclaims, “Mmm mmm!”

I should probably say that I absolutely love dresses. I love them and have always loved them–so I did walk into this shop slightly biased.

But in my defense, I did keep an open mind. Until I saw the wall of loveliness! All bets were off.

This shop is gorgeous, comfortable, and inviting!

More like a boutique in a big city than a small town dress shop, Ellen’s is hip and full of class.

Lovely feminine chandeliers grace the ceiling and fun black and white patterned chairs invite you to relax.

The tasteful decor makes you feel like you’re in a ritzy downtown dress shop–but without the high prices!

This may be a consignment dress shop, but these dresses are in superb condition. What a great Wabash County find.

Don’t think the guys are left out, either. She even carries tuxedos for sale or rent.
