little Indiana is in love with Harvest Tyme Pumpkin Patch in Lowell, Indiana. It’s another Indiana pumpkin patch that will make you wonder why you ever picked up a pumpkin from the big box shops.

Pedal tractors, baby chicks, lots of playground fun, and the hayride to the pumpkin patch are all free! Free, I tell ya! The only two attractions that will cost you are still inexpensive–and one of the two, the milking contest, will net you a prize (and the prize is Kid #2′s new favorite thing).

Walking through a family-owned Indiana pumpkin patch like Norm’s just makes me feel good.

I mentioned in a previous post that Norm’s Pumpkin Patch has goats and donkeys, but I didn’t get a chance to tell you much more than that.

We just happened to walk by a guy hauling out a pumpkin past its prime. He asked if we wanted to break it and feed it to the animals. Did we ever! Now that is something that little Indiana had never done in an Indiana town before.

Kid #2 started chattering and shouting, “Horse! Horse!” as soon as he saw the donkey (he’s on a big horse kick right now). Kid #1 was excited to throw in chunks of pumpkin. The goats were happy too–and the baby goat was able to squeeze through the fence on our side before he’d get scared and run back to his mom. Cute!

This isn’t the first time little Indiana has suggested that you bypass the big box in exchange for a small town pumpkin. Make an afternoon of it in this picturesque Lowell, Indiana pumpkin patch!

For a pumpkin patch that’s easy on the wallet but has loads to do? Well, you just can’t beat Harvest Tyme.

When you pull in, you won’t be able to resist the view. Fields and pumpkins! It’s simply beautiful–and easy to find (which you know is always a perk for those of us who get lost so easy).

When the kids saw all the stuff to do, well, they didn’t know what to do first!

Did they check out the playground equipment? Or did they play in the crooked house or the corn box? They both made a beeline for the shiny red Farmall pedal tractors.

Not just one or two, there were actually three of these beauties–as well as a few other ride-ons for younger kids who can’t maneuver so well. With a nice paved lane, the kids had so much fun!

After that, they took off in separate directions. One kid ran to the gas station to “fill up” his pedal tractor. Kid #2 decided the baby chicks in Chickville needed a new BFF.

Harvest Tyme Pumpkin Patch in Lowell, Indiana: Pumpkins!

There is just so much to do at this small Indiana town pumpkin patch! We grabbed the kids from the slides and took a hayride together.

Charlie, the tractor, pulled us along in very comfortable hay wagons. Grandparents will appreciate this cushy ride–I know I did!

You’ll go through these scenic fields with slightly rolling hills. It’s not so long that little ones get fidgety. It’s just long enough. Oh, and free.

The Great Pumpkin (Patch)

Harvest Tyme is a super fantastic place to begin a new family tradition: picking out a pumpkin. Check it out on the weekend and enjoy the multiple firepits and freshly made kettle corn.

Using my list of Indiana Pumpkin Patches, hubs and I headed out with kids in tow to explore!

little Indiana headed back to Lowell, Indiana to check out Norm’s Pumpkin Patch Farm.

Following the signs, we found Norm’s Pumpkin Patch easily enough. Pulling in, you’ll drive past the pumpkins and make your way to the back of the farm to park.

Before you head over to the pumpkins, you should know that the corn maze is located behind the parking lot. Ask for directions–Kid #1 thought this was the coolest thing ever!

It’s a big one! Norm’s pumpkin patch boasts a four acre corn maze. Four acres!

Norm’s Pumpkin Patch Farm has such a neat story. More than twenty years ago, Norm grew a few pumpkins and decided to share with the neighbors.

A neighbor loaned him a small tractor so that one neighborhood family at a time, he could give them a hay ride and a chance to pick out their own pumpkin!

As things often do, it took off! Norm expanded his operation to reach out to the community at large with reasonably priced fresh pumpkins.

Today, Norm supplies the neighborhood and people from miles around with a variety of pumpkins and a few fun attractions.

Haunted Hay Ride

Indiana Pumpkin Patch: little Indiana at Norm's in Lowell

During the week, this pumpkin patch in Indiana is very low-key.

Kids can play at the play area, check out the adorable goats and donkeys, and maybe even go for a barrel ride.

A lawnmower with carts in tow, this ride is a fast zigzag back over to a green space near the parking area. Kid #1 didn’t stop grinning! Some parents, however, may want to sit this bumpy ride out–although hubs was a fan.

But the weekend is when Norm’s really comes alive. With a haunted hay ride, regular hay ride, food, and a visiting magician, picking out a pumpkin becomes an event instead of something you just do.

Goats, Pumpkins, Hay Ride–Oh My!

Bypass those boring pumpkins at the big box shops–who knows how long they sat there? Instead, find the small Indiana town pumpkin patch, like Norm’s, closest to you. Make it a fun event that you’ll look forward to year after year!

Lowell, Indiana: Labor Day Parade

I love a parade–especially the Labor Day Parade in Lowell, Indiana.

The oldest parade in the state of Indiana, it’s a big one!

There’s a lot to love about this parade! You’ll see float after float after float after car of local businesses like Athen’s Grill or dance troupes.

Marching bands follow the line as classic cars and tractors roll by. The image to the left is a great example of the really sharp classic cars that get involved.

Just remember to bring a bag to save all that candy!

I Love a Parade

Lowell, Indiana: Spike's Railhead Does Trains

Downtown Lowell, Indiana was beyond enjoyable: antique shops, restaurants, and a storefront with a sign labeled “Spike’s Railhead.”

Advertising for Lionel, American Flyer, and plenty of others, hubs practically flew into this terrific Indiana train shop!

Just peeking in the windows you can tell it’s going to be good. There were all sorts of boxes of various trains and accessories, two big train layouts that light-up and actually work, and a huge variety of train sets for sale.

Even I was impressed. I’ve always liked looking at train miniatures. Hubs chatted the ear off the owner, Rick, and we don’t even have any trains, well, other than GeoTracks!

I browsed around, taking pictures. Many pictures. I just find the buildings, the tiny detailed people, and trees so fascinating. The creativity involved in putting together a whole display? Amazing!

Trains, Trains, Everywhere There’s Trains

I haven’t seen very many train shops, um, ever so for the small Indiana town of Lowell to have one and a good one at that? Well, that’s just awesome.

With Christmas around the corner, you might be happy to know that Rick of Spike’s Trains also has a repair service.

You can get that old train that belonged to your dad, or that one you got from Santa when you were 7, up and running circles around your own Indiana Christmas tree once again.

Lowell, Indiana High School: Incredible and Crumbling

Lowell, Indiana is such a neat little town.

We just had to spend a bit of time exploring the side streets that branched away from the fantastic shop-filled downtown!

Suddenly we burst upon this wonderful old building. Can you imagine our surprise and awe?

It towers over the street from its perch on top of a small, steep hill. Imposing–even in its decayed state.

How many students walked through these doors when the floors were shiny new wood? How many first days of school has that building seen?

They just don’t make them like they used to.

Abandoned School

Small Indiana towns or big cities, beautiful abandoned properties can be found anywhere.

The story behind this old Lowell School? The current owners refuse to sell but also refuse to make repairs. It sounds complicated. And frustrating.

So…it sits. Neglected. Crumbling. The roof completely disintegrating causing who knows how much damage on the inside as well as falling off and hitting homes that surround it.

What I wouldn’t give to poke around and take a few pics before it’s gone.

Save The Small Town Treasures

Lowell, Indiana High School

I can only hope that something will change. This is an important piece of Indiana history. It points back to a very prosperous beginning in Lowell’s history.

Would that not make a wonderful community gathering place?

Cornerstone Mansion in Lowell Indiana: My Cup of Tea

The Cornerstone Mansion Restaurant in Lowell, Indiana is absolutely incredible.

When was the last time you had “pretty” food? At The Cornerstone Mansion Restaurant it wasn’t only pretty–it was amazing!

Walking into that 1870′s Italianate-mansion was something else! Comfortable and nice without being fussy.

We were seated in what I’m guessing is nicknamed the “Cherub” or “Angel” room. Light blue with cherubs here and there, white tables and chairs, and plenty of antiques, we sat next to a great window.

Each room has a different style of decor. Every room looks great!

Cornerstone Mansion Restaurant Menu

The Cornerstone Mansion Restaurant has tea! Not the usual suspects like black tea or green tea, either. The offerings that day were Blueberry Tea (me) or Kiwi Strawberry Tea (hubs).

These iced teas were so good. Of course, I had to try hubs! I had a couple refills and am really wishing I had purchased some to take home.

I had never even heard of Blueberry Tea and I am a big tea drinker.

Our Order at Cornerstone Mansion

We ordered: Garlic Artichoke Dip, French Onion Soup (hubs), Turkey Club (hubs), and the Pork Schnitzel (me). All of our choices were recommendations from our server.

First, the Garlic Artichoke Dip. Can you say “garlicky goodness?”

Served with what The Cornerstone Mansion Restaurant calls “bread chips” this stuff was so good I admit I made more than a few “nummy” sounds.

Hubs wisely let me have the last one (maybe it was the growling that convinced him). Very good stuff.

Hubs French Onion Soup was cheesy, oniony, and smelled amazing. It was torture watching him eat it. Seriously.

Forget the rack or Chinese water torture, have someone sit next to you with a bowl full of the Cornerstone Mansion’s French Onion Soup!

The Main Event

On to the entree: more pretty food! As we were eating, one of the owners of the place (Kay) walked around and said a few words to everyone, including a few who were obviously local regulars. I love that!

As nice as this place was it still had the small Indiana town touch–which is so important. Everything is homemade and, yes, you can absolutely tell!

Dessert at Cornerstone

Lowell, Indiana: Cornerstone Mansion Restaurant Lemon Silk Pie

This wouldn’t be little Indiana if there wasn’t a piece of pie throw in there somewhere! Hubs decided he was just too full to have anything so I ordered the Lemon Silk Pie.

Our server thoughtfully had it sliced into two, one for me and one for hubs. Yes, I did glare death glares at him as he ate every bite. As full as he said he was, he managed to eat it (and about licked his plate too).

Let’s just say that The Cornerstone Mansion’s Lemon Silk Pie is light and sweet and a pure joy to eat! See–it even makes me rhyme!

Consider this post just one more reason to visit Indiana (do it for the pie! or the tea…or the appetizer…or the entree). It was a beautiful and tasty meal!
