You won’t go wrong with Klein Brot Haus in Brookston, Indiana. This small town bakery is fresh, priced right, and simply delicious!

Klein Brot Haus Bakery in Brookston, Indiana

Not only is Brookston, Indiana really cute but the bakery itself was situated in a fantastic old building with really sharp woodwork.

It sort of reminded me of the FingerHut Bakery in North Judson, Indiana. Definitely long on character!

They even had a selection of locally crafted goods. I saw an Indiana-shaped cutting board! I’m thinking that I have to go back and get that one!

Klein Brot Haus Menu

Klein Brothers Bakery had such an awesome selection. Don’t think I use the word “awesome” lightly, either. In the case of Klein Brot Haus Bakery? It’s easily justifiable.

I’m talking pies, breads, croissants, cookies, and bars. It smells so incredibly good inside this rather large downtown business. They even had a breakfast and lunch menu plus a salad bar!

Klein Brot Haus had chalkboards hung up above the many, many shelves of baked items for sale. Not only was it a nice touch but it was helpful, too. It was easy to take it all in and find what you need in just a glance.

Brookston Bakery

What exactly did we need? Well, little Indiana and family had to do a taste test, you know, in the interest of research! The gigantic Iced Cinnamon Rolls were calling my name. How could I refuse?

Hubs ordered a big Chocolate Croissant and the kid picked out a ginormous Iced Sour Cream Sugar Cookie. That cookie? Was so soft. Absolutely delicious! I should have got one for me!

Goods For Sale

Klein Brot Haus Bakery in Brookston, Indiana: Chocolate Croissant

I have no idea how it happened but somehow we didn’t buy anything extra! No loaves of freshly baked bread, no chocolate chunk cookies for the road, and no fruit pie for later. *insert sad face here*

Whatever were we thinking? Sigh. They had really fun and unique varieties of baked bread for sale.

Good to Go

We have GOT to make a return visit to this quaint Indiana town and soon–and you do, too! Klein Brot Haus, or Klein Brothers Bakery, definitely deserves the attention!

Ask someone in Rensselaer, Indiana where to head for lunch or dinner and you’ll probably hear “City Office and Pub” (if you are 18 and over, that is).

Judging from the flow of traffic and hearty greetings, City Office and Pub is the Cheers of Rensselaer!

City Office and Pub in Rensselaer, Indiana

City Pub, as locals call it, is known for a nice, laid back atmosphere and great food.

Everyone seemed to know everyone else but that’s not exactly uncommon in a small Indiana town.

But what is unusual is that once upon a time, this pub also housed the Mayor’s office! Talk about job perks!

Food Fit for The Mayor

While the Mayor now has an office elsewhere, it’s kind of a tradition in the area for the just-turned 18 year old to accompany their parents to City Office and Pub for a nice celebratory dinner.

The building is filled with beautiful woodwork. Get a load of that incredible bar! Just fantastic!

Head on back to the area with raised seating and check out the old photos of Rensselaer, Indiana in its early days.

City Office and Pub Menu

City Office and Pub in Rensselaer, Indiana: Cheeseburger

It was hard to decide. City Pub had daily specials to choose from in addition to a great full menu.

We ordered a cheeseburger with Swiss and Fries (hubs) and (you guessed it) a Reuben Sandwich with Fries for me!

As you can see from the photos–they were good! I just love a nice Reuben.

That’s a Spicy Meat-a-ball!

What you don’t see in the photo? The awesome Spicy Bloody Mary hubs and I each had before ordering. I’ve never had it served with a pickle and olive before but, yeah, that olive was GOOD! Who needs celery?

Right on the main road, there is one entrance directly to the bar and one for family dining so, with the kid in tow, we headed to family dining.

Very, very small…I don’t think there were even 15 tables, maybe not even 12, but business at the Route 10 Bar and Grill was absolutely steady. Surrounded by mostly Chicago-land sport memorabilia (go Bears!), large, wall-mounted flat screen TV, and a big fish tank in the corner, the kid had plenty to look at, and I could see why a young, high school to college-aged guy would dig the atmosphere. Added bonus: the waitress was really nice and not only talked to the kid, she actually pointed out various fish, etc. in the tank, making a friend out of him for life, I do believe.

Of course, I had to check out the restrooms, and when I turned the corner, there was a very large group of Amish teens! I walked right past the (very tidy) restroom I was so surprised. One of the Amish ladies nicely pointed it out to me. Oops.

Hubby and I both ordered the Philly Steak Sandwich, fries, and potato salad (I hate when we do that!) and the kid got a hot dog, fries, and a little cup of Jell-o. Everyone was pleased with their order, and, after peeking at the bikers next to us…Whew! Those mile-high burgers looked fantastic! Next time – I’m getting a burger!

For dessert: well, I was hoping for some yummy pie, but all they happened to have left was Turtle Cheesecake. I just wasn’t feeling it, and since I wasn’t exactly hungry anyway, I passed.

Overall: We were satisfied but it might be a good idea to call ahead if there are members under 21 in your group, just to make sure there is enough room for everyone.
