Country Folks Pizza is amazing, amazing pizza! This is the small town mom and pop business at its best.

This Kouts, Indiana shop has walls plastered with thank you cards, notes, and drawings. From cheery thank-you’s to artwork from the younger bunch and local sporting and scouting troops, this pizza place has very deep roots indeed.

But maybe one of the funniest things I’ve seen has been the motto of this Indiana town pizza joint. “Have you had a hot piece lately?” Now that’s just clever and definitely memorable–just like the Country Folks Pizza itself.

Rensselaer, Indiana: Schmidy's Pizza Palace

Schmidy’s Pizza Palace is the new pizza place in Rensselaer, Indiana.

For reasons I cannot altogether fathom, Rensselaer attracts pizza shops like a fly to honey. I don’t understand it–but I have to say I like it!

This newest addition, Schmidy’s Pizza Palace has taken up residence in what was once known as Jamie’s Cafe.

Taking a cue from the original casual vibe, Schmidy’s also keeps it low-key.

The walls are decorated with sports memorabilia from the various local teams, like Saint Josephs College and the Rensselaer Central School Corporation mascot, The Bombers.

Now that is a fun way to exhibit a bit of local flair!

You’ll find more than locally-oriented wall decor: this is a fantastic menu. More than just pizza, you’ll find sandwiches, salads, and an assortment of sides at this Jasper County pizza place.

Hubs and I were thrill to see a Chicken Alfredo Pizza that had Broccoli on it! I know that sounds so strange but, many years ago, hubs was going through the Naval Nuclear Power School near Charleston, South Carolina.

There was a wonderful mom and pop pizza shop there that got us hooked on it–and we could never find anything else like it.

Until now. I guess even then I preferred the mom and pop restaurants!

Schmidy’s Pizza Palace has very good pizza. I’m impressed with the choices at this Indiana town parlor!

Plan ahead if you want the Stuffed Crust Pizza. It takes 45 minutes! I’m sure it’s worth it–that was good pizza (and loaded cheese fries)!

Kouts, Indiana may not be the Indiana town you think of when you want pizza. Let’s change that now, shall we? You need to meet Country Folks Pizza.

For twenty years this June, this Porter County pizza joint has been cookin’ up one heck of a perfect pie. This pizza is amazing!

This pizza is so amazing that I had to go grab a leftover slice after I wrote that second sentence. I kid you not. What will I do when it’s gone?

I had a meeting with Jesse Harper from JBH Productions who will be producing a couple of travel vignettes for little Indiana. We met at Country Folks Pizza and chatted over water (me) and soft drinks (hubs and Jesse).

It smelled so good inside. After our sit-down was over–hubs and I decided we had to bring home some pizza.

We didn’t take long to make up our minds. In fact, I think this was some sort of record!

Looking over the sides and extras portion of the menu, we got started with Tomato and Cheese Bread. For the car. What? You think we could wait until we got home?

We didn’t take home just any pizza. We took home the most unusual pizza we’ve seen in any of the small Indiana towns we’ve traveled through. We took home a Pepper-jack Swiss Beef Pizza!

For research purposes, we had to get the 20″ pizza. It is loaded with two pounds of roast beef. Two pounds! They say it is equal to four foot long sandwiches worth! Yowza.

Signature Pizza

Country Folks Pizza: Kouts, Indiana

Laden with Pepper-jack and Swiss Cheese, garlic butter, green peppers, and onions–it is impressive. This is the Country Folks Pizza people’s signature creation. Customers raved about this delectable sandwich selection so much, they thought, “Why not turn it into pizza?”

They sent me home with a pizza cutter because, if they cut it in store right then, butter would have leaked all over. Oh. My. Word.

I ate it for dinner, breakfast, lunch, and dinner. I also ate it cold. I also just ate it again. Any way you slice it–I am obsessed!

You know me. You know my pizza obsession. You need to know Country Folks Pizza. It’s more proof that great things are frequently found in the smallest of packages.

THIS is a menu. Between Stan’s Stuffed Pizza or the classic crust, from super-thin to deep dish, Country Folks Pizza has it!

A slew of sandwiches and their own pizza creations, you’ll find plenty here to keep you happy. As for me? I think there’s one slice of pizza left in the fridge–and it’s calling my name. Just don’t forget to tell ‘em that little Indiana sent you.

Our dinner at French Lick Winery The Vintage Cafe in West Baden Springs, Indiana was so good–we were definitely hopeful about the best part of it all: Dessert!

Let’s just say that dessert at French Lick Winery was the icing on the cake! The Black Tie Cake, a smooth brownie base topped with a white chocolate filling with a finishing layer of chocolate cake–frosted with fudge icing.

Hubs and I shared the Wine Cake, a delectable and different sort of bundt cake–this one is made with French Lick Winery’s Red Wine and dusted with powdered sugar. Pretty and good!

I had heard that Kniman Bar and Grill in Kniman, Indiana dishes out the best pizza in Jasper County from more than one source.

After a tip like that, little Indiana had to give it a try and made the trek to tiny Kniman, Indiana!

Since this is a bar, you must be 21 or older to enter. But, with my horrid allergy to tobacco, hubs went in to pick up our order. My hero!

He came out smelling like an ash tray–but carrying one of the most delicious pizzas I have ever had!

Seriously, this pizza was a masterpiece.

We didn’t get any weird toppings. Heck, this mom and pop shop wouldn’t have offered them anyway.

But this pizza was so good–it didn’t need anything other than sauce and cheese! Well, that’s what Kid #2 and I had, anyway. Hubs and Kid #1 shared a half and half pizza.

Half Sausage and half Supreme. We all agreed that this pizza most definitely ranks in the top ten of all time!

Kniman Bar and Grill in Kniman, Indiana

I appreciate a crust with a fair bit of browned bubbling cheese.

I like a tasty sauce and a crust that doesn’t resemble frozen pizza–or chain pizza parlors. This place? Rocked it.

Kniman Bar and Grill fulfilled and exceeded my expectations. It passed the next day cold pizza for breakfast test!

With Indiana wine making such a great impression every which where, have you checked out French Lick Winery in French Lick, Indiana yet?

This Indiana winery is making a splash in wine circles!

This piano factory turned Family-friendly dining is set in a spacious, sharply decorated building. Nice but not uncomfortably nice, there’s plenty of room for large groups.

Big glass windows overlook the Indiana wine production. Since we were at the French Lick Winery on a Saturday, that portion of the restaurant was inactive–but still neat to see. All that gleaming stainless steel!

The menu at the French Lick Winery, what they call The Vintage Cafe, was something else! How ever would I decide?

The Vintage Cafe has a wonderfully simple menu.

At our server’s suggestion, we started with Pan Bigio. A nice, crusty Italian bread with a delicious chewy inside. As a bread fanatic, even I was impressed.

Served with an Herbed Olive Oil, it looked as pretty as it tasted good! Even the kids enjoyed it.

But deciding on the main course was a different matter and definitely not so easy. For me, anyway.

The Vintage Cafe Main Course

It wouldn’t be me if I didn’t agonize over food choices. Pizza or ravioli? Pizza or ravioli?

Well, it isn’t just pizza and ravioli. To be more specific, it was either Chicken Spinach Alfredo Pizza or Spinach Artichoke Ravioli.

In the end, I chose pizza–which was really good! A wild yeast from Naples makes this crust out of this world. But–oh my word was hubby’s ravioli incredible!

Creamy and smooth, each bite was so flavorful. I almost stole it from him and you know how much I love a good Indiana pizza.

Of course, I have plenty more to share about the French Lick Winery in lovely Orange County. We haven’t even covered the best part: Dessert and a free wine tasting.

By all means go and see for yourself the deliciousness that is Indiana wine. Just don’t forget to tell ‘em that little Indiana sent you!

little Indiana must have an internal homing beacon related to pizza. No matter where I am, if there’s good pizza, like Roxano’s Restaurant in Vevay? I will find it!

The Swiss Wine Festival was still going on yet Roxano’s Restaurant was hopping! Now that is the sign of a great place to eat.

Spacious though the seating was, they were really busy. So, we elected to get our order to go and head to the Courthouse lawn just down the street.

We thought the kids might enjoy a chance to run around. We needed a chance to chit chat without interruption, too. There will be more on the exceptional Courthouse in Vevay, but for now? Let’s get back to the grub!

Indiana Pizza

Vevay, Indiana: Roxano's Restaurant Breadsticks

We started with their Garlic Buttered Breadsticks. It’s research don’t'cha know.

Roxano’s Restaurant had more than a few things to choose from. If I had been with a large crowd, I would have loved to have tried their giant party pizza–18″ x 18″ of the ‘za! How fun is that?

What did we order? Three words: Chicken Alfredo Pizza.

Pizza Heaven in Vevay

As little Indiana, I have had pizza and I have had pizza. This, my dear readers, is pizza with a capital “P.”

Granted, the Garlic Butter Breadsticks are drenched in the delicious garlicky butter sauce and, as we know, butter always makes it better.

But, even so, these are perfection. Soft and warm, the marinara sauce made a great complement. Kid #1 couldn’t get enough! Kid #2 didn’t exactly complain either.

The pizza was phenomenal. Perfectly topped with red onions, grilled chicken, mushrooms, and heavy on the cheese, this is a pizza I will not soon forget!

You’ll easily find this one in the downtown of this lovely Indiana town–just follow your nose! There’s more than pizza in this mom and pop restaurant. Why not see for yourself?

Wakarusa, Indiana is the home to a very popular pizza joint: Cook’s Pizza.

little Indiana heard that people come from miles around to enjoy this Wakarusa favorite. After our visit there? I believe it!

On the corner of the main street, Cook’s Pizza can’t be missed! This small Indiana town doesn’t have all that many corners in its super cute downtown.

It’s a small mom and pop restaurant. Large windows look out onto the bustling street. You can choose between a handful of tables or cozy counter seating.

Small as it is, there can also be a bit of a wait! My advice? Try to go during the “off” time or prepare to wait for awhile. Either way? It’s so worth it!

Everyone knows everyone else and the conversation is non-stop. Even folks milling around waiting for their to go order chit-chat with the tables.

The walls and shelving are full of local sports teams and other small town business. Nothing fancy, but that’s never mattered to little Indiana!

In fact, we’ve heard that several years ago a few local farmers were given a key so they could let themselves inside in the morning, make coffee, clean up, then lock up again. Only in a small town!

How on earth could we decide? Pizza always sounds good to me! But when heard about their Stromboli Sandwiches? I was torn.

I ended up getting the Ham Stromboli. Hubs got the same thing but with Sausage.

These sandwiches? Works of art! I was just telling hubs last night that I was craving it. That would be the perfect midnight snack for sure.

Cook’s Pizza Delivers!

Just what you would expect from a small town: Friendly and Good. We’d love to go back and sample some more from the menu–if I can resist the call of the Stromboli!

Walter’s Pub in Leavenworth, Indiana has a jaw-dropping view.

Located on the edge of an overlook, this place is more than just a pretty face–it also holds some of the most delicious pizza I have ever had. Ever!

That’s the thing about Indiana towns. You just never know when the place you walk into is going to knock your socks off. It doesn’t matter if it is far in the country or in a teeny tiny town.

Walter’s Pub? Was one of those places.

We didn’t actually get to eat inside Walter’s Pub–we had both of our boys with us. But since we needed something for dinner and it was very close to us–we ended up doing carry out.

Hubs hopped over from The Leavenworth Inn, the bed and breakfast where we stayed, to pick up our pizza. He said the interior was really sharp. As a whole, well, he was rather impressed by the whole place!

Our pizza? Even neater! This pie was a work of art.

Artichokes, spinach, and chicken placed on top of Alfredo Sauce and then smothered in Mozzarella Cheese. Even the kids ate it!

Sure, Kid #1 complained a little but after he tried it? He admitted it was really good. For a kid that is on a Pepperoni kick? That should tell you something right there.

The crust was just incredible. I have never had such a full-flavored thin crust as that one. It was absolutely amazing–and crunchy!

They call it a flat bread crust. I call it delicious. I couldn’t believe that it was still so crunchy after sitting in the car for a bit. Pretty amazing stuff.

I would love to be able to go back to Walter’s Pub and try something else. They had a few interesting pizza’s on the menu that I am sure would be awesome, like BBQ Chicken Bacon Pizza!

Of course, I could probably try something other than pizza, too. Maybe. Okay, probably not.

Perhaps one day I’ll grow up and out of my pizza obsession. But chances are? It won’t be anytime soon!

I hear the Star Wars fanfare music playing when I look at the image of that breadstick from Dayton Station in Dayton, Indiana. Can you hear it, too? But if you think the breadsticks are good…just wait until you try the pizza!

We’ve already covered my Indiana town pizza obsession. It takes a lot to “wow” me–something the big chain restaurants don’t ever do. But Dayton Station, a family-friendly small town business, did!

It’s a great example to anyone who is big box addicted: You don’t need to eat at the same old places to find really good food (and, honestly, you won’t find it at those places, anyway).

It’s like walking into a lodge! There is a really fun cabin feel. The walls and ceiling are covered in wood planks. The tables? Yep, they match too (and are giant)! Even the chairs match–and the seats are generous and super comfy. Did I mention they are wood, too?

We weren’t the only people having an early lunch at Dayton Station. A few police officers sat at one table and a couple of tweens sat at the other. We took the last table after placing our order: Pepperoni and sausage pizza with an order of breadsticks.

The Pizza Has Landed

Piping hot out of the oven, our breadsticks, as I mentioned before, were fantastic! Super soft with the right amount of seasoning, with Marinara sauce for dipping for the kids and a zesty Jalapeno Cheese sauce for us.

When the pizza arrived? We ditched them. We ditched them and dug in to our crispy browned pizza and didn’t look back. Residents of this Indiana town are so lucky!

Dayton Station makes a nice and tall pie. They brown the top so it’s crisp, eye appealing, and yet–not overdone. Really, this is pizza perfection.

Our waitress had recommended a 10″ pizza with the addition of breadsticks and she was right on target. We were full and didn’t have any leftover!

little Indiana would like to extend a sincere “thank you” to the son of our server who was on his way home from Iraq. We know how tough the waiting can be. He will be headed back there in two weeks and we wish him the best as he completes his third tour!
