Steve’s Grill is the brand spankin’ new place to eat in DeMotte, Indiana.

Remember Mike’s Kitchen (the town staple for what seemed like decades)? And then Hometown Grill after that? Don’t worry–Steve’s Grill may have taken the location, but it introduces a great new feel and a fantastic homemade menu!

Large menus with a lot of variety make me nervous. It usually means “frozen” and that means it’s not going to be included on little Indiana. Going out to eat, well, I expect a little more!

However, our server at Steve’s Grill assured me that “nothing was frozen.” I instantly cheered and poured over the menu with a renewed sense of purpose.

Breakfast is served all day at Steve’s Grill (which I love!), but more than that you’ll find various entrees, sandwiches, salads, and then some. Changing specials round out the offerings.

The special of the day while we were there may have been frog legs (not kidding) but I, very much a creature of habit, ordered a Reuben Sandwich.

Kid #1 got French Toast, Kid #2 wanted “Eggies!” and hubby settled on the Philly Style Steakburger–our server’s recommendation. He is a fan of a good Philly!

We all dug in. For starters? Those fries are good. Oh my. We were all pleased with our order. I am happy to say that this Indiana mom and pop restaurant did a very nice Reuben Sandwich.

Downtown Walkerton, Indiana has quite a few really sharp buildings–you can’t help but notice the large mural painted on the side of the Corner Cup Cafe!

It’s sort of like an all in one Indiana coffee shop, chocolate shop, and cafe.

I love a good cup of coffee as much as the next guy. Here at Corner Cup Cafe, there are changing specials and a very large and impressive assortment of flavored coffees. Yum!

Add to that a seasonal menu and a nice selection on the usual menu, it’s easy to see why folks in this Indiana town don’t just eat and run–they linger.

We had lunch at this Walkerton staple. Well, lunch and coffee.

With an eye-catching bakery case of goodies (and chocolates by a famed big city chocolate maker), you can bet we threw dessert in there too! You knew that was coming, though, didn’t you?

I’ll admit it was hard to decide!

There were a few seasonal items that sounded so good. Cranberry Spinach Salad? How unusual! But…there was also a Reuben Sandwich on the menu. I am a creature of habit.

Luckily hubs was along for the ride and he doesn’t always want to get the same thing (though, really, I consider my Reuben Sandwich obsession more of a hunt for the best! It’s research, right?). He went for the Beef and Mushroom Panini.

Piping hot with melty cheese in all the right places, both of our sandwiches looked fantastic. Don’t you agree?

More than sandwiches, Jim’s Cafe has a small wall of coffee. We saw flavors ranging from French Vanilla to Luck of the Irish.

little Indiana hit the road and head for DeMotte, Indiana or, more specifically, to Jim’s Cafe!

Well, let’s just say that in this small Indiana town shop, there’s plenty more than just coffee.

When you take a step inside, you will smell the lovely, lovely smell of coffee–and food!

Jim’s Coffee Shop serves the breakfast, lunch, and dinner crowd. Which was a good thing because little Indiana (and family) were hungry!

They’ve got a nice menu over at Jim’s Cafe. It was an easy choice for Kid #1 and #2 (hot dog and grilled cheese). Hubs and I waffled.

The sandwiches sounded so good! Hubs finally went with the Patty Melt. But as for me? Well, they did have a Reuben Sandwich on there!

I chose the Onion Rings, Hubs went for fries. I’d recommend the Onion Rings–crispy goodness. Man those hit the spot.

Of course the kids enjoyed what they ordered. But what haven’t I mentioned yet? The coffee!

Indiana Coffee Shop

Jim’s Cafe has quite the assortment of coffees and teas. There are so many yummy-sounding flavors!

You may remember that I didn’t actually enjoy coffee until after Kid #2 was born–and I only like it black. Even so, there’s a lot here that I could really get into.

While I didn’t actually get coffee personally, I did drink quite a bit of the Frozen Mocha that hubs ordered.

He stated, and I agree, that it is the best Frozen Mocha he has ever had. Ever! So take that, big box coffee!

Here’s just more proof that you can find everything you need in a small town. You just needed to know where to look! Jim’s Cafe was very good–and a place I wouldn’t mind returning.

little Indiana is in the Dawg House in Greensburg, Indiana–and lovin’ it!

If you thought that a hot dog is nothing more than a bun and beef frank, prepare to be wowed.

As the owner says, it’s “Where the only time being in the Dawg House is a good thing!” I can’t help but agree. It certainly is good!

Hip and fun, it’s a gleaming 50′s style hang-out. Black and white tiles, exposed brick, and a retro counter add to the fun. Hilarious comics dot the walls.

They deliver to folks in this Indiana town and even serve beer. The free Wi-Fi is just a nice little bonus!

The Dawg House Menu

This menu? Is giant! However would little Indiana choose?

Hubs decided instantly: Guacamole Hot Dog with a side of chips. Kid #1 got a cheese dog and I? Well, let’s take a look at what I could have ordered!

There’s also the Tex-Mex Dog, a Coney Hot Dog, the Sombrero Dog, and the spicy Firehouse Dawg. There’s also 25 dogs on the menu! But then I saw it…

If you’ve been following along in little Indiana for awhile, then you know how much I like a good Reuben sandwich. The Dawg House? Had a Reuben Hot Dog!

My Reuben Dog, or Dawg as they spell it, was the best hot dog I have ever eaten.

Swiss cheese, thousand island, and sauerkraut on an all-beef frank. Delicious! Who would have thought?

Hubs was in love with his Guacamole Dog. He agreed–best hot dog that HE’S ever had.

Feeling adventurous? Finish a 22 lb hot dog with the works and win a t-shirt! Did I try? Not this time–and only if we can make it a Reuben Dog!

You’ll Howl for More

If you are a hot dog lover or just want a place to hang out, the Dawg House in Greensburg, Indiana is it!

It has everything–great food, great atmosphere, Wi-Fi, and even beer. It’s a restaurant that I believe is destined to be the favorite local hangout in the years to come!

Bozley’s Family Dining and Spirits in Roselawn, Indiana was absolutely not what we were expecting.

It’s a big space with family seating and a bar area but we are pretty sure it’s more known for it’s bar and local bands than as a family place.

Our visit might change that one! Our server recommended the Reuben Sandwich. Guess what I chose?

Hubs ordered a Philly Cheese Steak. He’s on a personal mission to find the best. He’s dedicated like that.

Kid #1 had to have a hot dog and fries.

As The Golf Carts Go By

Roselawn, Indiana: Bozely's Family Dining and Spirits

There wasn’t anything for the baby to really look at so he got a little squirmy. I will say, however, that watching all the golf carts whizzing by was definitely entertaining to me.

It turns out that the only way to drive is with a golf cart in this small Indiana town!

I might be slightly exaggerating, but with the Lake Holiday Country Campground and a nudist colony or two. Yes, you read that one right: Ponderosa Sun Club and Sun Aura.

So there are plenty of people who take advantage of golf carts (fully clothed, thank goodness) for a quick little zip into town.

Bozley’s Family Dining Food

It was good. No, scratch that. Bozley’s Family Dining and Spirits in Roselawn, Indiana is home to one of the best Reuben sandwiches I have EVER had.

You should know that by this point I’ve had quite a few and–this was just terrific.

It had a hint of sweetness and was a good compliment to hubs onion rings. A really good compliment.

Actually, Hubs Philly Cheesesteak was pretty good, too. He tried a bite of mine and wanted more! That’s just how good it was. You already know I didn’t share.

Next time I would order a Reuben Sandwich with a side of onion rings. I’m sure you are oh so surprised about that one. Hubs declared he would make the switch, too.

If you go check it out for yourself, be sure to call ahead so you can try and catch one of the many local musical acts they host. I think that would be fun!

George’s Koffee Cup in Kouts, Indiana makes me want to pack it all up and move to Kouts!

From the friendly, talkative waitresses (a shout-out to Sherri, the not-so-shy and quiet waitress) to the chatty patrons and sunshiny interior, this is on the “must go” list!

When hubs and I were walking down main street in Kouts, we asked a small group of overall-clad men just where we should go to eat. They unanimously agreed that George’s is the place so, of course, George’s it had to be!

One of them said to make sure to get the potato soup if it was on the menu that day. Unfortunately it wasn’t–but at least now you know.

Entering George’s Koffee Cup in Kouts, Indiana bears a great resemblance to walking into the home of a good friend. There’s talking and laughing and everyone is yakking not only to those at their own table, but to people walking in or out or even a few tables away.

It really is the epitome of small town — and what every small town restaurant should aspire to be.

Yes, I believe atmosphere is just that important. Fortunately for George’s, (and little Indiana) the food is pretty darn good too.

The Head Turn

We did have that moment when you walk in and absolutely everyone turns and looks at you (like in every very small Indiana town).

You can see them trying to place you, wondering where you came from, and if you are related to someone in town . We quickly got seated.

There were both booths and chairs and a really neat (and tall) old tin ceiling. Just spectacular. They just don’t make ‘em like they used to!

Reuben’s were on the menu so I couldn’t be happier! I have no idea how I got this Reuben Sandwich obsession.

I didn’t even order the things until the last two years or so! Now I can’t seem to get enough.

Hubs had the fish and we both had soup. Yummy, yummy soup. In fact, the soup came in a bowl and we so should have requested something smaller, like a cup of the stuff, instead.

I couldn’t hardly finish half my Reuben I was so full of soup (and you should know by now that I can pack it away pretty good)!

Small Town Life

If you are looking for the real small town experience, Kouts, Indiana is an excellent place to start or at least include somewhere along the way. You won’t go wrong with a meal at George’s, either.

It will give you a healthy dose of small town atmosphere and plenty of personality for sure! Don’t forget to say “hi” to Sherri–and tell them that little Indiana sent you!

In Remington, Indiana there’s a new kid in town.

This family owned restaurant boasts homemade food and bulk goods in a beautifully restored old building in this small Indiana town.

At the The Homestead Buttery and Bakery, everything is homemade.

What a menu! How would I ever decide? Simple: I had to have my customary Reuben Sandwich . Hubs ordered the Homestead Stack.

Our sandwiches were so delicious we couldn’t stop making yummy noises (or maybe that was just me)!

I don’t know what kind of bread it was but it was so flavorful! You can kind of see from the photo on the left how it has little flecks of herbs in it. What you can’t see is how absolutely wonderful they went together!

There’s Always Room for Dessert

We also had a root beer float, which was silly of us, because we had to get pie, too!

Wednesday is pie day at the The Homestead Buttery and Bakery. Who can say no to a case of nummy looking, fresh-baked pie?

I love Lemon Cream Pie and the The Homestead Buttery and Bakery’s Lemon Cream Pie was the best one I have ever had.

The crust was perfection and the filling was the ultimate complement–a perfect balance of sweet and slightly sour.

Hubs ordered the Chocolate Cream Pie and it was good, too. He devoured it pretty quickly while groaning about being full. Oh, the sacrifices we make for little Indiana.

More Than a Cafe

What’s fun about this place is that they don’t just stop at the whole bakery/cafe part. Great though it is–there’s more!

If you are looking for where to buy bulk goods in Indiana? You are in the right place!

They also sell dry goods, home decor, and have plenty of take home casseroles, cookies, and more in their freezer case. Anyone can bring home a piece of Remington, Indiana!

Lucky Indiana Town

Remington, Indiana: Homestead Buttery and Bakery Lemon Cream Pie

Remington, Indiana residents are so incredibly lucky to have the The Homestead Butter and Bakery in their town! Judging from all the people who made their way in and out while we were there–they will be in town for a long, long time.

The Sandwich Shop of Delphi, Indiana: Best Reuben Sandwich

We had already been to the Stone House Restaurant and Bakery in Delphi, Indiana and we needed advice. We asked Jean, the friendly owner of Noble Bikes what other restaurant she recommends.

Her answer? She said to try The Sandwich Shop because it has the best French fries in town–and an unusual layout.

Now, I admit, I have a thing for sandwiches. Some people could eat cereal 24/7 but me? I like bread, butter, and all the stuff that goes between.

Sandwich lover or not, The Sandwich Shop in Delphi, Indiana proved to be just as unique as Jean mentioned. I am pretty sure I have never seen a setup quite like this!

You walk in and BAM! there’s the U-shaped counter four steps in front of you flanked by bar stools. Three other tables dot the outer corners but everything is no more than fifteen or so steps from the door.

The person in the middle runs the show–taking orders, handling the register, serving food, and cooking it! Yes, this place is small. We were instantly intrigued.

So, we sit down. We were a little confused as to how to order. The setup is just that unusual, but, just so you know, you order right from your seat!

The cook/waiter/cashier mans the counter from the middle, taking your order right there! I ordered a Reuben Sandwich and potato salad (already forgetting about the fries advice!) and hubs got a burger and fries.

It was quite a wait but that’s what happens when everything is made fresh. When an order is up, the cook/waitress pops it on the counter close to you so you can grab it. Neat, huh?

Looking at hubs plate I was jealous. How did I forget to order fries? Good thing I make him share.

I will say that the Reuben Sandwich at The Sandwich Shop in Delphi, Indiana is hands-down the best Reuben I have had so far.

Mayberry–With Sass

First of all, the place was full of locals, and I mean FULL – there was never an empty seat for long, but what made this place a great gathering spot was the banter between the cook/waitress and all the regular customers.

Hubs leaned over at one point and said, “Roseanne!” Yes, the cook/waitress was sassy and fun and quick with the witty comebacks.

You can imagine how surprised we were when we heard one of the regulars call her Rosie! What a coincidence!

Sassy and Sensational

The Sandwich Shop in this small Indiana town has atmosphere, good food, and plenty of sass to keep you entertained.

It was sort of like a slightly sarcastic (but definitely still family friendly) Mayberry.

The only drawback (which probably won’t affect many of you) was the lack of a highchair. We were stuck holding the baby but, even so, we’d definitely go back!

City Office and Pub: Food Fit for the Mayor in Rensselaer, Indiana

Ask someone in Rensselaer, Indiana where to head for lunch or dinner and you’ll probably hear “City Office and Pub” (if you are 18 and over, that is).

Judging from the flow of traffic and hearty greetings, City Office and Pub is the Cheers of Rensselaer!

City Pub, as locals call it, is known for a nice, laid back atmosphere and great food.

Everyone seemed to know everyone else but that’s not exactly uncommon in a small Indiana town.

But what is unusual is that once upon a time, this pub also housed the Mayor’s office! Talk about job perks!

Food Fit for The Mayor

While the Mayor now has an office elsewhere, it’s kind of a tradition in the area for the just-turned 18 year old to accompany their parents to City Office and Pub for a nice celebratory dinner.

The building is filled with beautiful woodwork. Get a load of that incredible bar! Just fantastic!

It was hard to decide. City Pub had daily specials to choose from in addition to a great full menu.

We ordered a cheeseburger with Swiss and Fries (hubs) and (you guessed it) a Reuben Sandwich with Fries for me!

As you can see from the photos–they were good! I just love a nice Reuben.

That’s a Spicy Meat-a-ball!

What you don’t see in the photo? The awesome Spicy Bloody Mary hubs and I each had before ordering. I’ve never had it served with a pickle and olive before but, yeah, that olive was GOOD! Who needs celery?
