Good Deed: Make People Happy (By Stopping!)

little Indiana is challenging you to do a good deed. When you see someone at the side of the road? Stop to help!

Good Deed

As you probably guessed, we are frequently driving around from one Indiana town to another. We do run into car trouble every now and again both with and without the kids.

Our worst experience ever was when we were an hour from home and an hour from any family. We were stranded. It was hot. We were in the middle of literally nowhere. Let me back up a minute to say that the kids? Had had a very full day.

Kid #2 at that time was around 9 months old and still hadn’t slept more than an hour or two at a time. Each night. Every night. We were usually exhausted and the heat certainly wasn’t helping anything.

Indiana Mosquitos (As Big As Your Head!)

Where our car decided to die was swarming with mosquitoes…which both of our boys happen to be super allergic to. They don’t just get itchy bites, they get bites that swell up. They couldn’t get out of the car because of the bugs and inside of the car, with windows rolled down and trunk open, was hot. We had nothing to eat. It was ages before anyone stopped to see if we needed help.

In that case, hours later, family came to the rescue. I am pretty sure I listened to Kid #2 cry and scream from exhaustion and heat for almost four hours nonstop–the time when we finally made it into a house. I was beyond frazzled at that point.

We have vowed ever since that day to always stop to see if anyone by the side of the road needs help.

Helping Others

We’ve changed tires, we’ve jumped cars, and two weeks ago while heading down to Santa Claus, Indiana, we gave a woman a ride to her house. She had a cell phone but her hubby was in Chicago and her son wasn’t around either. It was hot out there. And her house? Was way the heck out in a small town in the country.

Believe you me, it’s easier to talk yourself into not stopping. To pretend that the person has a cellphone and has someone coming to get them. But you know what? In our experience so far, the majority has had no one. Like the guy we helped who was headed toward Kentucky.

He had two big dogs in his car, his tire had gone flat, it was unseasonably cold, and he didn’t have a jack–or a winter coat! We were on our way to the Indiana Tourism Media Marketplace but stopped anyway. We had a jack, hubs helped him change the tire, then followed him to the gas station to make sure his flat spare would get him there okay before continuing on.

Yes, we were on our way to do other things. Important Things. But–we stopped anyway. Wouldn’t it be nice if someone did the same for you?

I challenge you to do a good deed, to make someone happy, and to stop and assist when you see someone at the side of the road. If I’m alone? Probably not going to happen–but I will call, let someone know, and provide the mile marker they are near.

Been There. Done That.

We’ve all been there. Isn’t it time we stopped worrying about our schedules, our appointments, and even our “nice” clothes, and just help someone out when they need it most? Stopping has made me late each and every time. The conference started just fine without me. Santa Claus, Indiana didn’t go anywhere, either.

Stepping off my soapbox now. We can’t live our lives being afraid of what might happen. Do a good deed and help someone at the side of the road. It doesn’t mean they need your help, but they will be glad that someone bothered to even try!

little Indiana spent two days and one night at the lovely Charley Creek Inn in Wabash, Indiana. We visited a few old favorites–and made some new ones!

I grabbed awesome books for the kiddos at Reading Room Books and a Star Trek: TNG novel that isn’t mine at all. Nope. Not at all.

We had the chance to hop into Modoc’s Market for something hot to drink since Spring has decided to take its time. Modoc’s has an amazing back-story that I promise to share with you really soon. It involves an elephant! No kidding.

As to the food part of our travels? Oh, did we eat.

Wabash, Indiana Restaurants

Without the kids this time around, we were finally able to make it into Market Street Grill. How did we like it? Let’s just say that Wabash is very lucky to have this amazing restaurant.

One of these days I’ll get this video thing down! Also–I had only eaten graham crackers that morning so I was beyond hungry. But we had places to go and people to see so…that’s my excuse for my complete and total spaciness.

It isn’t every day that there comes along an opportunity like this one-: little Indiana is trying to win a $2000 grant from MomCentral. So far we’re in the Top 25 but that’s not enough–I could really use your (daily) vote! This contest runs through April 15, 2011.

This is only the first round: public voting. After that, the top three sites in their categories (based on rankings) will move on and be judged by a panel. If I can just get past the public voting I think I’ve got a shot at it!

What would this grant do for little Indiana? Well, as you may realize, running little Indiana isn’t cheap. Between rising gas prices, food, gear, and everything else, there’s not much leftover. I’ve had a few big ideas for the site. Would a snappier-looking, easy to use Indiana small town festivals and events calendar be great or what?

I’d also love a mapping function where you could easily see where I’ve been, where exactly a town is located, and simply click on the Indiana town name to go directly to that page. Leftover funding would be used for a billboard–with me paying out the remainder.

I think of little Indiana as the first stop someone may make when moving to a new small town, to see what there is to do in the area, or to create a weekend getaway while supporting local mom and pop businesses like yours. Changes in site design (and just advertising) will definitely make things easier but won’t happen without a little extra help! Help me, help you by voting for little Indiana. Community Matters: Church Dinners and Apple Pie

One of the best things about Indiana small towns are the church dinners! These fundraisers rock for more than a few reasons.

First, everyone knows everyone so it’s just another chance to get the community together for a little chit-chat, to break up the long winter, or to finally celebrate the arrival of Spring (which I am so ready for!). Sometimes, it’s also to raise funds for a specific cause or event, like a family in crisis.

Secondly, church ladies (and men) really know how to cook (yes, I’m totally talking about you, Alice!). Sometimes church dinners are partly catered, like for the main course, or they are completely made by church members (can you say chicken and noodles?). Either way, the men and women of the church take responsibility for the sides–and dessert!

As you can see from the photo above–it’s good stuff! Of course, I was so busy getting Kid #1′s plate together I kind of forgot about my own. I think, however, that you can get the general idea of all the goodness!

The church pictured here is St. John’s in Rensselaer, Indiana. It’s tiny! There’s a neat (and very old) graveyard on a large sloping hill (not anywhere near as large a hill as at Ball Hill Cemetery in Cutler, Indiana) but definitely possesses that same peacefulness and quiet. It’s also in the middle of nowhere and basically surrounded by cornfields.

But every year they have a fantastic chicken dinner. Our wonderful neighbor (who also makes the best zucchini bread EVER– hi, Donna!) surprised us with freebie tickets! Last year we had the great good luck to sit near a man who loves to bake (and share) pies.

Apparently he’s known is his small community for his pie-making skills and frequently enters his pies in multiple fairs in the summer–and wins.

We managed to snag a piece of his homemade Apple Pie before it was gone. Apple isn’t anywhere near my favorite (unless it’s made by you, Cathy) but this was so good I forgot to take a photo!

No matter what your religion, I strongly urge you to branch out a little and check out the next church dinner in your area. Whether you attend the church or not, it is a lot of fun and completely pressure-free, at least in our experience so far.

Just think: a chance to meet new people, eat some yummy food, and donate a few bucks for a good local cause (in the case of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Rensselaer, Indiana, it was for needed renovation if I remember right).

Little Italy Festival in Clinton, Indiana: That’s Amore!

Little Italy Festival in Clinton, Indiana

Why, yes, little Indiana does love a good festival and if, like the Little Italy Festival in Clinton, Indiana, it has an emphasis on food, I’m more than happy to attend!

Held every Labor Day Weekend since 1966, this festival was giant.

Little Italy Festival

Knee-deep into winter, I find myself longing for festivals, fairs, and outdoor events in general. Clinton, Indiana, small Indiana town though it is, sure knows how to plan an event that leaves me yearning for summer.

There are familiar fair favorites like those (creepy) swings, helicopter ride, kiddie Ferris wheel, and all that sort of fun (nausea-inducing) kid stuff. I even joined Kid #1 in the fun house!

Really, the selection of rides that fit the age of Kid #1 (5 years old) was perfect! He had a great time. There was just so much that he could do!

We had fun just watching him strut around afterward like he was big stuff.

Little Italy Festival and Italian Food

Of course, there’s your standard fair food like snow cones, funnel cakes, and cotton candy but since this is the Little Italy Festival, there’s also plenty of Italian food on the menu!

Cannoli, Mostaccoli, Italian Cream Cake, and all yummy things Italian. Now that’s my kind of festival!

If you like to shop, not only are there plenty of vendors (many with Italy-themed items like “Kiss Me I’m Italian” t-shirts) but the downtown Clinton shops are also open. Trust me, it will keep you plenty busy!

Can you say loads of planned activities? This is a jam-packed four day festival. Yes, four days of Italian goodness!

Little Italy Festivities

Even little Indiana enjoyed the fair rides at the Little Italy Festival in Clinton, Indiana!

You can choose from an assortment of activities like a grape stomping event or watch various local dance troupes or gymnasts perform onstage.

There are also events like the choosing of the Re and Regina and the crowning of the Grape Queen (I’m not making that up).

There’s also a parade, and a spaghetti sauce cook-off (can little Indiana be the judge of that? Pretty please?). That would be perfect!

Dana, Indiana: Home of Ernie Taylor Pyle

Dana, Indiana is smaller than small. It is so small it probably counts as one of those blink or you’ll miss it kind of towns — but no less interesting! little Indiana has repeatedly said that no matter how small a town is, it doesn’t mean that it isn’t worth your time.

Well, look we did and, believe it or not, the first thing you see when you enter the town is a big painted mural on the side of the building that says Ernie Pyle State Memorial with a big arrow pointing off to the right.

Yes, teeny tiny Dana, Indiana was the home of the beloved Ernie Taylor Pyle, a war correspondent killed overseas outside of Okinawa. If you haven’t read anything of his, you should — it’s superb.

His childhood home and plenty more are available to tour and would be a great spot for the war history buff. There’s two out buildings full of things!

Unfortunately we couldn’t get inside — the Ernie Pyle State Memorial has been closed. It sounds like there’s talk about the town of Dana taking possession (which I do so hope happens)! More about Mr. Pyle in a future post.

Walking around Dana didn’t take long, it was basically up one block and down another. Other than the Memorial, there is only one shop that we could see is still open in the downtown area (antiques) and a few blocks away there is a candy store.

Besides that, there was one mystery in Dana that we could not figure out: a big circle in the middle of town right in the center of the street with squares of numbers up to 100. Do you know what it is?

Luckily, someone stopped in town and we were able to ask if they knew what it was for. Would you believe that Dana, Indiana has a big cake walk and that they hold it right there in the center of the street? Small town living for sure!

I would imagine that even with such a sad downtown little Dana has a lot of community – it’s not every town that puts a cake walk right smack dab in the middle of things. The surrounding homes were in mostly good shape and I’d imagine that the Ernie Pyle State Memorial has to be a big draw for the area and probably helps keep a few of the remaining businesses surviving.

There were a few rather grand buildings – but far more empty lots of vacant buildings that I like to see. If anyone else has the back story of Dana, Indiana, I would love to hear it. You can see more of little Dana, Indiana on my Flickr photostream!

Mopsy, Flopsy, Cottontail, and the Nunemakers

We weren’t in any hurry. The kids were happy just chugging along on a bike ride. The Nunemakers, in case you didn’t know, are a bike-riding family.

We pull the kids along in a bike trailer and, while they normally love it,baby was getting hungry. As usual. We are very much out in the country. We rode slightly into a driveway to get out of the road, the only one for quite awhile. Hubs started feeding the Chunk, and then we saw a man and woman come out of the house. That’s awkward. With two bikes and a trailer packed with toys, snacks, lunch, books, and camera, we more closely resemble an expedition to the Arctic than a family out for a leisurely ride. We are also most definitely taking up the end of his driveway.

The man is friendly. He shrugs off our apologies at using his driveway like this, and says that he has something that we would probably like to see. Um, what? Don’t a lot of horror movies start out this way? He walks to the front of his yard near the ditch. Hubs and the kid follow.

My mind jumped to road kill of some sort which would probably scar kid #1 for life…but then I heard hubs say something about how neat that was and that I had to see it. My turn.

I head over to kid #1 crouched down in the grass, looking at something very intently. I just see a mess of fur and think back to road kill and wondering why hubs would think I would enjoy that when…baby bunnies.

When toodling around the yard, the man of the house saw the fur and wondered if their dog had dragged something home. He couldn’t believe (and we couldn’t either) that mama bunny had decided to make her nest right near the road like this. Miles of country around and she picks the front yard of a home!

I’ve seen plenty of bunnies at the fair, I even know a few people who have them, but I’ve never seen baby bunnies. These are tiny! Aren’t they cute? I mean, it just makes you say, “Aw.”

I do think there is a valuable lesson here. Sure, the yard needed mowing (like always) and the garden needed planting, and let’s not get started about our work-in-progress on the inside — but look at what we would have missed out on if we hadn’t taken a chunk of time out of our day to slow down a little! Where we stop looking at the clock and the to-do list and just enjoy each others’ company.
