Indiana Blogs: Tales From The Coop Keeper

Tales from the Coop Keeper is an Indiana blog that will have you laughing. A lot.

A self-professed wannabe farm girl, Jayme is certainly well on her way to becoming the “real thing.” She’s got chickens, keeps bees, enjoys gardening, and just about lives in her apron.

She’s determined–nothing seems to hold her back, or keep her down, for long! Lose a bunch of weight and run in the Chicago half-marathon? Check. Produce her own honey from her very own hives? Check. Her blog will keep you cheering–and reading!

Indiana Blogs: Tales From The Coop Keeper

Why did you start Tales From The Coop Keeper?
Oddly enough, I started my blog one Easter Sunday, I believe it was 2009, after baking an assortment of Easter treats that were so lovely, I felt the need to share them with the world!

What about that name? Why Tales From The Coop Keeper?
I was trying to do a play on words.  I had just gotten a batch of baby chicks, and figured I’d be blogging a lot about chickens.  Tales from the Crypt Keeper crossed my mind, and I morphed it to ‘Tales from the Coop Keeper’.  For the first few months, I didn’t quite like it, but now it’s grown on me, and I’m called ‘The Coop Keeper’.  I do believe I like it.  : –)

What are three of your most favorite posts?
Oh boy, that’s a hard one.  Three huh?  Well – my blog isn’t really about one thing – one day it’s as silly as can be, the next day, it’s rather serious.  I’ll try to pick the three that I think best represents what Tales from the Coop Keeper is all about.

  • This one I wrote after complaining about the price of chicken food, thought I could drum up some ‘Chicken Sponsors’, you know – you send me a check for $40 a month, and you get letters from a chicken.  You know I’ve not got nary a sponsor yet!?
  • Chicken Sponsors Needed
  • This next one I wrote when I went camping after the throes of getting ready for the Lowell Garden Walk.  I worked night and day in the garden that summer, and I think the insanity seeps out in this post.  It’s also when I realize I’m not too fond of camping.
  • Law, A Change is Coming
  • This is a Dear John letter I wrote to winter one February morning when I’d had enough of winter!
  • It’s Not You, It’s Me: A Dear John Letter to Winter

What keeps you ready and raring to post? Why do you blog?
So often, I just blog thinking no one is really reading it, so I guess I really blog for myself.  Sometimes I just feel the itch to write and journalize my day, and that is truly what my blog is, just random thoughts, silly things that I think of, and often, sharing struggles that I have.

If in SOME WAY something that I write brightens someone’s day, makes them laugh, make them think about something differently – I feel that it’s worth the time that I put into it.  If no one reads it – I still enjoy going back and reading my drivel of days gone by!

Cooking and baking seems to be your favorite thing! Is that something you’ve always done or something you discovered later in life?
I never picked up a pan until I got married in 1983!  I discovered my love of cooking and baking, and the country way of life after watching the movie ‘The Witness’ with Harrison Ford.  I fell in love with the Amish lifestyle, and we all know how much of that is centered around food!

I’ve recently lost just over 60lbs, so my recipe sharing has dwindled somewhat, and I share a lot of my weight loss story.  My other passions include living simply and frugally, beekeeping, gardening, and renovating this old farmhouse from 1869.

Do you have a life motto or quote?
I have many – but one of my favorites is by Thoreau ‘Never look back unless you are planning on going that way’.

Anything else that you would like to share with little Indiana readers about your blog?
I’d love to encourage everyone reading to really find the beauty of each day.  Open your eyes to the possibility of life.  Lighten up – mentally and physically!  Be grateful.  Stop on by the Coop!  We’d love to have you!
