A simple, tidy exterior belies the warm, homey interior of Tonya’s Patisserie in Chesterton, Indiana.

You would never guess that this small but bustling Indiana town holds incredible, delicious desserts–at the hands of a small town gal turned big city chef turned small town entrepreneur.

With several executive chef positions under her belt, soft-spoken owner Tonya Deiotte exudes kindness and certainly knows her way around a kitchen. What’s more, in true small town style, her mother is usually by her side, busy at work lending a hand. Locals stream in and out. It seems there are plenty of regulars.

Of course there is, what with a great menu like this one. They churn out a changing weekly menu in this Indiana bakery: gluten-free soups, vegetarian items, and desserts. My goodness, the desserts.

Tonya pointed out tasty treats in the case, using words like “lemon curd” and “cheesecake” and “pastry.” Locally grown produce shines in her creative and absolutely drool-worthy confections. I should know. I had the chance to try a pastry (or two) myself. Okay, maybe even more than three, but I did share with the family.

Lemon curd surrounded by a flaky and buttery pastry becomes something special with large, sweet blueberries. Oh, now that is something special. Lemon is my favorite and this was absolute perfection.

Mile-high cinnamon rolls draped in a sweet icing. Melt in your mouth chocolate chip cookies. The soft exterior crunch of a pastry with a generous dollop of Nutella hidden inside a soft, delicious interior.

Cleverly decorated, shortbread cookies take on a new form as sweet little mice. The S’mores Cupcake was calling my name–and don’t get me started on the adorable apple cakes. We might be here awhile. Every item in the case looked beautiful. I love eating pretty food. I love it even more when it tastes as good as it looks. As you know, that doesn’t always happen. But here at Tonya’s Patisserie, you don’t need to worry about that.

No matter what you choose, it’s going to be good.

Go There

It’s kind of like having a taste of France in Porter County but without the snobbery, overseas flight, or the guaranteed jet lag. Tonya has a passion for baking–and you can taste that in every bite. It isn’t everyone who would move back home and open up a bakery. This is just what downtown Chesterton needed. Now, go support her charming bakery, and see why I can’t stop raving about it.

Absolutely put this on your “must go” list. It doesn’t get better than Tonya’s Patisserie in Chesterton, Indiana.
