Portland Arch Nature Preserve in Fountain, Indiana was so incredibly beautiful, peaceful, and boasts just under a mile of trail to tromp along. Encompassing almost 300 acres, it’s a gorgeous piece of Indiana. Next time we’ll have to bring along our walking shoes. I would love to have explored the whole thing!
What cracks me up about our experience here is that we had no idea that this huge protected forested area even existed! We were just strolling around Covington, popping in and out of the shops, chatting with the owners, when we heard about Portland Arch. Everyone and their brother mentioned that our boys would absolutely love it and that we really needed to stop by and check it out. Well, it’s hard to ignore that kind of a plea! After we finished up downtown, we took to the road again to find Portland Arch. We still weren’t exactly sure what to expect and we definitely weren’t wearing the right clothing! All four of us were in khaki shorts and nice tops. We were also all wearing flip-flips. It’s not exactly the kind of footwear you should wear on a trail but once we arrived we really wanted to see how far we could get.
The beginning of the trail features tall trees and some wooden stairways. Really, it’s just all this natural beauty every-which-way. The oldest really wanted to walk the whole trail but my husband and I knew it was a long shot, especially after the first stone stair area we crossed. Then we saw the muddy dog and the people wearing hard-core hiking boots that were thick with mud. We had to let him down easy, but it wasn’t hard, not after he saw the seemingly endless stretch of a muddy path! It’s too bad, too because it was right near these incredible rock formations. This is also when I came up with the rule that everyone needs to bring along an extra pair of sneakers!
See? Even small Fountain, Indiana has something amazing. Just like every Indiana town. You just didn’t know where to look, until now!
