Copperhead Creek Gem Mine: Nashville, Indiana

Copperhead Creek Gem Mine: Nashville, Indiana

You’ll find fun and adventure at Copperhead Creek Gem Mine in Nashville, Indiana. This family friendly Brown County attraction is a great way to spend an hour (or two). It’s open as long as the water is running. In other words, this is a seasonal attraction.

I’d go so far as to say it is one of the top attractions in Nashville for children. Families can pick up a bag or a bucket of mining rough. This is a gritty, sandy material through which you will dig, hunt, sift, and use the water to clear it out.

Copperhead Creek Gem Mine: Nashville, Indiana: The Nunemaker Family Panning for Gems

As you can see from my image, even our youngest son could get involved. He needed a little help to hold onto the screen but he was certainly capable of looking for the treasure. You’ll find chunks of gems.

Our boys found two baggies full of gems. And, yes, they were from buckets randomly handed to us. It was incredible. Our boys instantly got to work. The oldest is very methodical. He knows what he wants, he knows what he’s doing, and he picked those screens clean. He went for gems of every size. If he saw a flake of a gem–into the bag it went. He couldn’t wait to take the time to classify each thing for sure.

Our youngest, on the other hand, was as careful as a boy his age can be. He was all about grabbing the largest chunks. He didn’t care about the tiny flakes, like his brother. He wanted the big stuff that his little hands could easily grab. He loved playing in the water. I mean, he loved using the screen in the water.

After so much shopping, you might be ready for a change of pace–before you pick it up again, of course. It would be a great treat with which to surprise the kids in your family. It’s an attraction that no one is expecting. What a wonderful downtown Nashville, Indiana addition.

Don’t worry if you’ve missed the warmer seasons in Brown County. Again, you can try your hand at panning for gems as long as the water is flowing. Is that fun or what? You can bet that children eagerly check out the gem mining operation, hoping that it has thawed enough to work. There’s always a kid hanging around, just looking.
