If you walked by White River State Park in Indianapolis, Indiana this past Sunday, then you saw the happy hubbub that is DigIN. What is DigIN? DigIN, as in “Dig Indiana,” is a one day, annual event that celebrates the best of Hoosier food, wine, and beer in one amazing location.

It’s an all-ages event. Yes, there is a bit of walking. There aren’t a ton of things for children to do, at least at the time of this writing. Yet, if your kids are anything like mine, trying new foods is good enough for them.

The menu was long. In fact, it was so long I didn’t get to near enough booths. So, what did I have? Let’s mention a few of my new personal favorites.

A Duck, Fennel, Sorrel, and Cherry dish was as lovely to see as it was good to eat. There was a Lamb Reuben with Napa Cabbage Slaw and Minted Mustard, plus Shrimp with Indiana Tomatoes and Watermelon Gazpacho–this is only a small selection of (tasty) items on a very, very long list.

But as you can see…the offerings at this Marion County event really range. We brought along our two boys and they enjoyed sampling so many different things and comparing favorites. I loved the chance to expose them to such unique variety at their young ages (3 and 8).

Their favorites (in case you were wondering) included a pretty quail dish, Smoked Bison Shoulder and Curtido, Lamb Meatballs, and the Roasted Sweet Corn Popsicles from Nicey Treat (that sounds strange, I know, but even my husband and I enjoyed them. They were really amazing).

Live music entertained, free sunflowers were available, and bonus tastes on the info-packed passports gave folks a chance to sample a favorite dish again, again, and again.

It was a very warm day. A few fans here and there spritzed water and helped keep folks cool at White River State Park. Iced bottled water (and recycling) was conveniently located–and greatly appreciated.

Even so, the heat didn’t stop anyone from enjoying the many food tents. You can bet that any booth that featured something cool was going to be a popular place.
