Victorians and those charming exterior flourishes–the scalloped trim, the angles, the sweet gingerbread trim–that’s just a part of the eye-catching greatness of Bluebird House Bed and Breakfast in North Liberty, Indiana.

The front porch of this St. Joseph County bed and breakfast is currently adorned with toy soldiers and race cars for now but after we have packed up and left, it will return to comfy chairs and flights of whimsy with complementing bird themed decor.

It wasn’t always so pretty and bright. In the not too distant past, this cheery home turned Indiana bed and breakfast was neglected. Falling apart. An eyesore. It’s hard to imagine that this charming house was once on the verge of demolition.

In fact, it took two years of restoration to change the status of the 1894 Victorian from “condemned” to “delightful.” Am I ever glad they did.

The key word here is comfort. Or, perhaps, it could be bright, comfortable, or airy. There’s a few I could easily and interchangeably use. Birds are, however, very much on the brain here. It just fits.

Just be aware that one mama Robin seems to have taken the bird theme to heart–she appears every year, building her nest above or near the front door. I’m not sure who was startled more this morning–her or me.

There are touches of whimsy. Look at the mural while you are heading up the stairs. The stair railing is made from a piece of wood that’s been wonderfully re-purposed.

Notice the ladybugs? They are hiding here and there all over the house. How many ladybugs can you and yours find? Our boys enjoyed tackling that challenge.

I spent the bulk of my time divided between the dining room, the kitchen, the front porch, and the backyard. One look at each of them and you can see why I had so much trouble deciding where to hang out.

You’ll find a nice selection of family board games in the hutch where the TV is kept. A very good assortment of teas, hot chocolate, and coffees await you in the kitchen. You know Kid #2 has a thing for “hot tea” and Kid #1 was all about the White Chocolate Hot Chocolate. He loves white chocolate. We appreciated the nice assortment.

That kitchen was so cozy. Tall cabinets constructed to mimic the lovely built-in cupboard are wonderful–and feel like they could have been there all along. It’s a clever, clever touch.

Things to Do in North Liberty, Indiana
Some people have a gift for seeing something as it could be–whether it’s a lump of clay, a blank canvas, or a neglected and falling apart home. For Debbie and Gerry, it’s realizing a home’s true potential.

These old homes are strong and solid. They have a character no new home, no matter how grand, can match. That’s especially true here at Bluebird House in North Liberty, Indiana. This is where sunshine lives.
