You say “Summer is almost over” but I say, “Not at Dog Days Ice Cream Parlor in Chesterton, Indiana!”
Step inside this 1920’s themed ice cream parlor–and prepare to be wowed by this Lake County shop!
Dog Days Ice Cream Parlor in Chesterton, Indiana
Open year round, you’ll find delicious flavors of gelato and sorbello!
From the period music playing to the old fashioned seating and large painted wall mural depicting the Chesterton of a bygone day, this is a cute shop. Appropriately named for those “dog days” of summer, you know, when the summer starts to seem long and you kinda sorta start yearning for things like cold and snow. Kind of year for winter, mind you.
But what’s even better is the covered glass case that holds yummy gourmet gelato made using locally sourced ingredients. Bananas Foster, Tiramisu, Uber-Vanilla, Butter Pecan, and Strawberry (to name a few). Decisions, decisions!

Kid #1 knew he wanted Mint Chocolate Chip in a cone. Hubs chose Chocolate Razzmataz and I? Well, I couldn’t decide. I had to get the opinion of an expert: owner of Dog Days (and soon to be new dad) Marty Shrader.
Marty recommended that I try Tiramisu or the Caramel Pistachio. Tough call…but I decided to go with the Caramel Pistachio. Cool, creamy, and a delicious change.
Kid #2 had the Mint Chocolate Chip Gelato in a cup (you know, to control general toddler mess) and Kid #1 had the same as well, but in a cone. The pirouette cookie in Kid #2’s bowl was a nice touch.
