Why did you start The Hidden Pantry?
My sons and daughters-in-law both had asked me to write a cookbook and my granddaughter thought it might be easier to start a blog about the old and new recipes we like. So a high school girl and her Grandma sat down one day and just started!
What about that name? Where did The Hidden Pantry come from?
The name, The Hidden Pantry, stands for hidden staples as well as hidden treats representing talents and hidden treasures we all possess but that may not be readily seen.
What are three of your most favorite posts?
My three favorite posts are:
- My husband’s Aunt Betty’s 1-2-3 Cake which is a cake you make one serving at a time by microwaving single portions in a coffee mug.
- Then there is one of our very favorite pies made from an old Dubois County Indiana Extension Homemaker’s Cookbook recipe my Grandmother gave me in the ’70’s for Buttermilk pie.
- The third is my childhood favorite dessert, a recipe from from my Mother for the most delicious gooey yummy Chocolate Chocolate Pudding Cake.
What keeps you ready and raring to post? Why do you blog?
I continue to blog because I think the old ways are worth remembering and I share some of them. I also enjoy new things and the path of discovery and sharing them.
Many other topics and subjects have evolved including stories, prayers, sewing, gardening, helpful hints and more.
You seem to spend a fair bit of time in the kitchen! What are your favorite things to make?
A few of my favorite things to make are the infinity or circle scarves. I featured two sizes and have made several of these for gifts that seemed to have been very happily received.
My family loved and I enjoyed refining a recipe for canning homemade apple pie filling that I gave as Christmas Gifts this year.
Love, love, love making homemade jelly and jams to share. This year I was lucky enough to find concord grapes and made grape jelly.
Is there anything that you absolutely can’t stand and won’t ever, ever eat it?
I would never eat crayfish (crawdad’s or crawfish) because my Dad raised them in an enormous barn and sold them as fish bait. So they will always be fish bait to me!
But you don’t just cook–you sew and garden, too! So what does your perfect day look like?
My perfect day is any day with warm blue skies with perfect white fluffy clouds and bright sun. A good hot cup of black coffee that I could smell long before I got to the coffee pot. My husband’s gentle kiss as he leans over me before leaving for work. The sound of the screen latching as I head out to my little garden to see how much the plants have grown since I looked last evening!
The sweet smell of bread I have made baking in the oven and the sight of a well risen golden loaf as it comes from the oven. Sounds of my children and my grandchildren as they all gather around the table and we say a prayer of thanksgiving for our blessings.
