One of the oldest museums in the United States, this Wayne County museum was founded in the 1930’s by millionaire globe trotter and Richmond resident Julia Meek-Gaar.

Her extensive collection of exotic souvenirs, historical artifacts and curiosities are well maintained and presented thanks to a dedicated staff of volunteers & local history buffs.

Not just a collection of item displays, the museum is really a miniature historic town inside and out. Step inside a one room schoolhouse. Visit the Blacksmith’s foundry, the Printing Office and then get a glimpse of what life would have been like growing up in an Indiana pioneer’s cabin.

The Wayne County Historical Museum stands out with its collection of unique items, not only from Indiana, but from around the globe. Take a gander at one of the very first car phones, peep inside a doll house from Japan or wonder at novel crafts from a bygone era. With one major three level building and several outbuildings, there’s a lot to see and do!

Surprises Inside the Richmond Museum

You just can’t visit the Museum without paying respects to the resident mummy! One of two mummies located in Richmond is housed just inside the Wayne County Historical Museum.

The Annual “Where’s Your Mummy?” event is quite popular in the city of Richmond, Indiana. That’s not all!

A wide range of events draw quite a variety of crowds throughout the year. The last event was a touch spooky. There may be reason to believe the museum is haunted!

If interacting with the afterlife fascinates you, turn out this fall to a Wayne County Historical Museum sponsored event in a local cemetery, where actors are on hand in full historical regalia to tell the “Stories of the Departed”.
