I was admiring these gorgeously detailed plates and platters and serving ware. I couldn’t get over the wonderful vintage look of them–and so many!
That’s when the owner of Meek’s Consignment and Antique Store piped up and admitted that he hand-painted them! To say I was shocked was an understatement.
There wasn’t just one teacup and saucer and a handful of plates. No, there’s a lot of pieces of all kinds! Some hold jewelry, some are to sit there and look pretty, while others are sweet little teacups. They are in all sorts of styles in many different colors.

These were absolutely gorgeous pieces of useful art! It turns out, that here in this very small town, Mr. Meeks had some very big opportunities come his way due to his amazingly detailed painting. In fact, many long years ago, a very large department store chain had wanted to sell his hand-painted dishware (Macy’s if I remember right!).
Unfortunately, he had to decline. He didn’t think he would be able to keep up with that kind of demand! Although I hate hearing about such a missed opportunity, I think he’s probably right. Once folks got a view of his work, it would have flown off the shelves!
But isn’t that something? Here I thought I was browsing around an Indiana antique shop but it was almost part studio with the range of hand-painted loveliness!

That’s what I love about small Indiana towns like Winchester–you don’t need to go to big box or to the city to find unique and amazing things. They are right here in your own backyard.
