More than five generations have worked at this family farm–it is one of the oldest orchards in the entire state!
Doud Orchards: Denver, Indiana
More than 9,000 trees boast over 150 varieties of apples! From Ashmead’s Kernel to Zabergau Reinette, Doud Orchards has you covered when it comes to fresh from the farm apples.
They even hold experimental apple trees from Purdue University and the Midwest Apple Improvement team. Isn’t that something!
Walking inside of the red apple roofed barn, you may be greeted by Sammy, the black and white polydactyl feline. He’s always up for attention. You’ll also see something you didn’t expect: a one room schoolhouse!
Indiana Apple Orchard and Pumpkin PatchBack in the 1980’s, the previous owner built the barn around the old Port Royal school. It’s kind of fitting since Doud’s Orchard hosts plenty of school field trips throughout the season.
They have a bee display so you can actually see them at work. Given my fear of bees, I find that idea frighteningly fascinating. There’s also a Johnny Appleseed tree and plenty of information at this apple orchard.
But my favorite part? It may be an Indiana apple orchard, but there’s more than apples here! Inside the school house lie fruit preserves, fresh honey, and general yummy things for sale. Seriously, the shelves are lined with tasty items!
Go ThereDon’t just get through the season, savor it! Take the time and visit an Indiana town pumpkin patch or apple orchard like Doud Orchards in Miami County. While this one isn’t a you-pick, you’ll love the variety.
Create a memory and enjoy the company of friendly small town folks–you can’t beat those small town prices, either!
