If I’ve said it once, I’ve said it one thousand times: there is always something to do in a small town, evident even in tiny Mount Ayr, Indiana!
With a population of 122 folks, this small Indiana town rolled out the welcome mat to long-time scientist Jerry Zimmerman, otherwise known as Mr. Freeze.
Mount Ayr, Indiana Welcomes Mr. Freeze
This cryogenics demonstrator brought in quite the crowd to the Mount Ayr Community Center. In fact, there were more people there for the show than there are people who live in the town! Folks kept streaming in right up until showtime.
I wasn’t sure what to expect–so I admit I was a bit surprised when the explosions began! Mr. Freeze showed the power of cryogenics and how Liquid Nitrogen could change every day objects like, for instance, a pop bottle to glass! It was an incredible display of science at work.
Mr. Freeze presented scientific information in ways that kids could understand. He was engaging and certainly shared my sense of humor with his “How cold was it?” jokes!
Cryogenic Shows with Mr. Freeze
Have I not yet mentioned that these shows are free? Mr. Freeze normally spends his time at Fermilab, the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory working on new detector research and machine design.
Fermilab kindly sponsors these Mr. Freeze events–to get kids interested and excited about science. Let’s just say–it works!
We’re big on science experiments in our house (just ask my husband about the moldy bread in a baggy by the back stairs) so it was right up our alley! But judging by the reaction from the crowd: we weren’t alone! This is exactly the kind of things that kids not only need but enjoy!
Loud noises, a soda “fountain,” a sample of a cryogenically frozen marshmallow and plenty of extreme cold facts (with a few surprises thrown in) made for a fun evening for all.
