Shubael Little Pioneer Village in Cannelton, Indiana is a bit of Indiana history that definitely veers off the beaten path. You don’t stand there and look at these cabins, you go inside, you see the remnants of lives lived: the furniture, photos, books, and even a bill of sale or two (if you happen to be in the blacksmith shop).
The path itself is surrounded by woods. It’s very quiet here. There are no manicured lawns and no shrubs or bushes trimmed into fanciful shapes. If you want to see the cabins and the various other buildings, you will need to walk. It is as though you have suddenly transported back to the Harrison County of the 1850s, when Indiana was wilderness and wild. Kids get a real thrill setting off on the different paths.
If you want a peek inside these unique Cannelton, Indiana artifacts, you’ll want to make it a point to catch their annual events. Every third weekend in October and every second Saturday in December make this historic attraction THE place to be! I’ve heard that it is really a neat event in December, as festival attendees use lanterns to guide their way.
