Dutch Apple Cake Recipe

Dutch Apple Cake Recipe

This Dutch Apple Cake Recipe is an old-fashioned cake recipe that’s not too sweet.

After my generous neighbor shared a load of beautiful Indiana apples with us, I combed through ways to use them! Through the magic of Facebook, she shared this classic Taste of Home recipe.

Served warm, it really hits the spot! Although it’s called “cake” don’t let the term fool you. It’s almost like a pound cake. I couldn’t get the apple slices to jab into the thick batter so I kind of swooshed them around instead.

Originally from an old clipping of Country Woman September/October 1997 but shared with me by a neighbor.

  • 3 Medium Tart Apples, Peeled and Cut into 1/4-inch Slices (3 Cups)
  • 3 Tablespoons Plus 1 Cup Sugar, Divided
  • 1 teaspoon Cinnamon
  • 2/3 Cup Butter, Softened
  • 4 Eggs
  • 1 teaspoon Vanilla Extract
  • 2 Cups Flour
  • 1/8 teaspoon Salt

  1. 300*
  2. In a large bowl, combine the Apples, 3 Tablespoons Sugar and the Cinnamon. Let stand for one hour to get the juices out.
  3. In a separate bowl, cream Butter and remaining Sugar.
  4. Add Eggs, one at a time, beating well after each addition.
  5. Add Vanilla Extract.
  6. In a different bowl, combine Flour and Salt; slowly add to creamed mixture and beat until smooth.
  7. Transfer to a greased 9-in. x 5-in. loaf pan. Push Apple Slices vertically into batter, placing them close together.
  8. Bake at 300° for 1-1/2 to 1-3/4 hours or until a toothpick inserted near the center comes out clean.
  9. Cool for 10 minutes on a wire rack.
  10. Run a knife along the outside edge and then invert onto a wire rack.
  11. Serve warm.
