Brown County in the Winter

Brown County in the Winter

Baby, it’s cold outside. But that doesn’t mean you should wallow on the sofa, binge watching Doctor Who before Netflix removes it February 1, while shoving Christmas Popcorn in your mouth. There’s a better way.

Instead, you can head to beautiful Brown County and join in the fun of weekend retreat Winter in the Woods. Brown County isn’t only an autumn destination. Appreciate its beauty and small town atmosphere a different time of year.

Winter in the Woods

Anyone will find something to fit their tastes. No, really! I have a feeling that by the end of this article, you will be making Nashville, Indiana travel plans.

On Saturday, January 15, there’s the Frosty Trails 5K, a walk or run event. Hit the trails at Brown County State Park! Sign up at the Lower Shelter. Show your parking receipt for a full refund. Admission for this event is $25 and includes a long sleeve t-shirt and post-race drinks and food. Sign up for the Frosty trails 5K here.

Is running not your style? How about a hike? Choose from the 3.5 Southern Loop Hike or the 2.75 mile Woodland Hike while picking up a few facts about winter woodland facts from DNR interpreters. The Boy Scouts will have s’mores ready and waiting! Read more about the Brown County Winter Hike.

If you want something a little shorter, head to the Brown County Visitors Center at 1 PM this Saturday. Take the Tea-zer Hike, a quick-paced walk around the 1.5 mile Salt Creek Trail. After forty minutes (or so) in the brisk winter air, it’s time for tea at Sweetea’s Tea Shop! There will be a Tea 201 class occurring and, for a small fee, you may learn how tea drinking can help keep you healthy this year.

But that’s not all. There’s also Warm Up from Within, an energizing wellness weekend retreat.

Warm Up from Within

Mind, body, and spirit. That’s the focus of Warm Up from Within.

This weekend retreat isn’t about restriction. There are no jam-packed itineraries to follow or checklists to mark off. Instead, you can pick and choose what appeals to you–and listen to what your body is telling you.

It’s about yoga, sacred dance, art, meditative movement, and so much more. As Lee Edgren, owner of River Light Yoga and host of the event, shared with the Brown County Blog, “So often, we rely too heavily on outside information to tell us how we are doing and ignore information from our own heart and spirit.”

She continued, “Warm Up From Within is filled with activities that encourage us to get in touch with our inner light and life and to respond more fully from our own hearts and minds.”

Winter in the Woods in Brown County, Indiana Shows There’s More to Brown County than Autumn Leaves!

Take time out for you for a change. See why yoga has been a beneficial practice for 5,000 years. As Lee mentions on her website, ” Restorative yoga and meditation particularly have been linked with improvements in cardiovascular health and stress-related disease.” Let your journey begin with people who know in a place that understands.

As Lee also stated on her site, “The promises of yoga are extensive: physical health and beauty, spiritual expression, and social connection.” At the Winter in the Woods retreat, you can easily attain all three.

For course information and instructor details, look to EventBrite to buy your Warm Up from Within tickets for January 15-17, 2016. The rest of the Winter in the Woods Events feature separate admissions. See the appropriate links in the article for purchase information.

Wrap it Up on Sunday with Trail Hobo

It’s dutch oven meal time fun for the Trail Cache and Dutch Oven Cookout. Trail Hobo will be cooking up a hearty meal, just like the pioneers. But before you dig in, there’s geocaching to do! Make sure you have the app installed on your smartphone and know how to use it (trust me, it’s so easy) before you participate with your $5 event fee.

Be sure to RSVP on the Trail Cache and Dutch Oven Cookout Facebook Page so they have enough prepared for everyone!

Keep those New Year Resolutions for the first time, um, ever with a visit to Winter in the Woods in Brown County. It promises to be a lovely new way to ring in the new year–while getting (or staying) in shape.
